Density Page 17 If we think of mass as the amount of matter in an object and volume as the amount of space an object takes up, then density is the relationship between mass and volume. It is the amount of matter that can be packed into a specific space. The density of a material is its mass per unit volume. Density = Mass Volume Example: Gold has a density of 19.32 grams per cubic centimeter (written as 19.32 g ). cm 3 Rewrite the density equation for each of the following: Mass Volume 1. If the mass of an object is 23 grams and the volume is 9m 3 , what is the density of the object? 2. If the mass of the cone below is 1820 grams, calculate its density. 3. If the density of the sphere below is 3.2 g m 3 , find its mass 4. The density of silver is 10.49 g/cm3. If a sample of pure silver has a volume of 12.993 cm3, what is the mass? Page 18 5. Pure gold has a density of 19.32 g/cm3. How large would a piece of gold be if it had a mass of 318.97g? 6. A screwdriver has the density of 5.5 grams per cubic centimeter. It also has the mass of 2.3 grams. What is the screwdriver’s volume? 7. Find the density of a rectangular prism measuring 3cm by 4cm by 6 cm, weighing 7.9kg. 8. Calculate the density of the rectangular prism below weighing 936 grams. 9. Water has a density of approximately 1g/cm3. A cylinder with a radius of 1cm, a height of 4cm and a mass of 20 g is place in a swimming pool filled with water. Will it sink or float? 10. A plastic cube has an edge length of 5 centimeters and a mass of 122.5 grams. Determine the density of the cube to the nearest tenth.
