Participation in sports, physical activity and exercise has increased exponentially in females since the adoption of Title IX in 1971. Historically, approaches to the female athlete and the youth athlete have been based on literature involving males who are adults. With the evolution of females in sports, development of female specific approaches to athletic and physical development is continuing to emerge in the literature. Likewise, development of youth specific programs continue to develop through research. Applying these principles developed specifically for young female athletes is imperative to the success and rehabilitation of the female athlete. This course will provide an overview of participation and injury risk in youth sports, particular at the middle school and high school levels in the female athlete. Special attention will be devoted to the maturation, development and unique female characteristics that may be contributing to the increase in initial and recurrent/subsequent injury risk in this population. This course will identify the current evidence on the prevention of injury, rehabilitation of injury and development of physical literacy in the young female athlete. A multi-disciplinary team of sports medicine and adolescent medicine physicians, physical therapists, dietitian and sports psychologist will provide each course attendee with in-depth information that will be instantly applicable to patient care. Specific, evidence-based evaluation and rehabilitation strategies will be presented to provide physical therapists and athletic trainers with a comprehensive approach to evaluating and treating these injuries. Laboratory break-out sessions will be included to enhance understanding and allow for dynamic interaction among course attendees. The main goal of this course is to enable attendees to feel confident in providing a comprehensive rehabilitation program for these common pediatric orthopaedic & sports injuries in young female athletes. This course, sponsored by the Division of Occupational Therapy and Physical Therapy, is part of our ongoing education services to therapists both in our community and nationwide.
