The date is observed to commemorate the Mexican army's unlikely victory over French forces at the Battle of Puebla on May 5, 1862, under the leadership of General Ignacio Zaragoza Seguín. In the United States, Cinco de Mayo is sometimes mistaken to be Mexico's Independence Day—the most important national holiday in Mexico— which is celebrated on September 16. Documented student learning gains have produced 4,600 payment points ! Last year we achieved a total of 7,600 points. With 6 weeks left in the school year our goal is 6,610 Payment Points. Right now, we have reached 70% of our goal. We have 2,010 to go by the end of the school year. Keep it going team! ELASA Instructors interested can contact Ms. Peralta or Mr. Shambra. ELASA has been offered an opportunity to have a booth at this event. This could be a good opportunity to promote our programs to the Highland Park community. Please join Heide Spruck Wrigley, PhD - Senior Researcher and President of Literacy work International as she presents approaches and models that have been used successfully in the field. Advantages and challenges inherent in these models will be discussed as well as how they can be adapted to meet the needs of different subgroups, including the needs of low-skilled English learners.
