IVN October Newsletter 2015

1. The first Jack O’Lanterns were actually made from turnips.
2. Halloween is the second highest grossing commercial holiday after Christmas.
3. According to Irish legend, Jack O’Lanterns are named after a stingy man named Jack who, because
he tricked the devil several times, was forbidden entrance into both heaven and hell. He was condemned to wander the Earth, waving his lantern to lead people away from their paths.

4. The largest pumpkin ever measured was grown by Norm Craven, who broke the world record in
1993 with a 836 lb. pumpkin.
5. Black and orange are typically associated with Halloween. Orange is a symbol of strength and
endurance and, along with brown and gold, stands for the harvest and autumn. Black is typically a symbol of death and darkness and acts as a reminder that Halloween once was a festival that marked the
boundaries between life and death.
According to the American Cancer Society, there will be an estimated 231,840 women and 2,350
men who will be diagnosed with breast cancer this year in the US. There are several factors that can
increase a person’s chance of being diagnosed with breast cancer. For instance, overweight and
obese women --defined as having a BMI (body mass index) higher than 25 -- have a higher risk of being diagnosed with breast cancer compared to women who maintain a healthy weight, especially
after menopause. Being overweight also can increase the risk of breast cancer coming back
(recurrence) in women who’ve been diagnosed with the disease. Age is also a risk factor. Your risk
of developing breast cancer increases as you get older. About 1 out of 8 invasive breast cancers are
found in women younger than 45, while about 2 of 3 invasive breast cancers are found in women
age 55 or older. Pure genetics can put people at risk for breast cancer. About 5% to 10% of breast
cancer cases are thought to be hereditary, meaning that they result directly from gene defects
(called mutations) inherited from a parent. Breast cancer risk is also higher among women whose
close blood relatives have this disease. Having one first-degree relative (mother, sister, or daughter)
with breast cancer approximately doubles a woman's risk. Having 2 first-degree relatives increases
her risk about 3-fold. The most important treatment there is for breast cancer is early detection.
Self examinations and yearly mammograms (for women over 40) are vital steps to take in the fight
against breast cancer.
