The math consortium group met on June 7, 2012. Below is a summary of the changes to the diploma math
courses. There were no changes to MATH 1017. Detailed minutes are posted at the following link:
http://www.dtae.org/TechEd/standards/ifccmeetingminutes.html
The changes for MATH 1011, 1012, 1013, and 1015 are below.
MATH 1011 – The following changes are recommended.
1. Competency minutes changed as follows:
a. Basic Mathematical Skills – 475 (instead of 675)
b. Mathematical Skills in Business-Related Problem Solving – 775 (instead of 675)
c. Mathematical Information for Documents – 675 (same)
d. Graphs – 325 (instead of 225)
2. Under Basic Mathematical Skill
a. Delete #1 – 6 and rewrite as one learning outcome “Add, Subtract, Multiply, and Divide whole
numbers, fractions, and decimals.”
b. #7 “Convert among fractions, decimals, and percents” will be #2.
c. Reword #8 “Calculate percentage, base, or rate in number sentences and word problems” and
renumber as #3.
d. #9 “Solve applied problems involving percents or increase and decrease.” will be #4.
e. Delete #10 “Use spreadsheets to perform basic mathematical and business problems.”
3. Under Mathematical Skills in Business-Related Problem Solving
a. Delete #1 “Calculate a business commission.”
b. Add #1. “Calculate trade and cash discounts.”
c. Reword #2 “Calculate markup based on cost and selling price.” to read “Calculate markup and

markdown.”
d. Reword #3 “Compute simple and compound interest.” to read “Calculate simple interest,
simple discount, and compound interest.”
e. Delete #4 “Compute wages, payroll, and payroll taxes.”
4. Under Mathematical Skills in Business-Related Problem Solving – no changes recommended
Math 1012 – The following changes are recommended.
1. Course description – Will read “Emphasizes the application . . . measurement and conversion, formula
manipulation, geometric concepts, technical applications, . . . . “
2. Competency #6 – changed from Formula Manipulation to “Geometric Concepts”
3. Under the Decimal competency, change outcome #7 from “Convert from fraction notation to decimal
notation” to “Convert between fraction notation and decimal notation.”
4. Under the Decimal competency, delete outcome #8 Estimate with decimal notation.
5. Under the Percents competency, change outcome #3 from “Solve percent problems using percent
equations” to read “Solve basic percent problems.”
6. Under the Percents competency, delete outcome #4 “Solve percent problems using proportions.”
7. Under the Measurement and Conversion competency, reword the 4 competencies as follows:
a. Convert measurements of length, weight/mass, and capacity within the American system.
b. Convert measurements of length, weight/mass, and capacity within the Metric system.
c. Convert measurements between the American and Metric systems.
d. Solve application problems involving measurement.
8. Under the Geometric Concepts (formerly Formula Manipulation), delete outcome #1 “Solve basic
formulas for a specific variable” and then change the current outcome #2 “Identify basic two and three
dimensional figures” to the new #1 outcome.
9. Under the Geometric Concepts (formerly Formula Manipulation), add the following as the new
outcome #2, “Find the perimeter of polygons and circles.”
10. Under the Geometric Concepts (formerly Formula Manipulation) competency, change outcome #3
from “Find the area of rectangular and circular figures” to read “Find the area of polygons and circles.”
11. Under the Geometric Concepts (formerly Formula Manipulation) competency, change outcome #4
from “Solve for volumes of cubes, rectangular solids, and right circular cylinders” to read “Solve for
volume of three-dimensional objects.”
Under the Geometric Concepts (formerly Formula Manipulation) competency, change outcome #5
from “Identify, measure, and solve problems using angles” to read “Identify and solve problems
involving angles.”
12. Under the Basic Statistics competency, change outcome #2 from “Solve applications involving
frequency, distributions, and histograms” to read “Solve applications involving frequency distributes
and histograms.”
Math 1013 - The following changes are recommended.
1. Under the Basic Algebraic Concepts competency, change outcome #4 “Expand expressions with
exponents” to read “Compute the value of expressions using the laws of exponents.”
2. Under the Basic Algebraic Concepts competency, add #10: “Set-up and solve problems with direct,
inverse, and joint variations. (Optional)”
3. Under the Intermediate Algebraic Concepts competency, change outcome #1 from “Define the
concept of one variable being a function of another” to read “Define relations and functions.”
4. Under the Intermediate Algebraic Concepts competency, change outcome #5 “Solve systems of linear

equations with 2 and 3 variables using elimination, substitution, graphing and determinants” to read
“Solve systems of linear equations with two unknowns.”
5. Under the Intermediate Algebraic Concepts competency, add #6. “Solve systems of linear equations
with three unknowns. (Optional)”
Math 1015 – The following changes are recommended.
1. The group recommended adding #15-17 from the math course 1017 to 1015 as optional topics:
 15 Define vector notation and represent vectors graphically. Cognitive Knowledge
 16 Add and subtract vectors. Cognitive Application
 17 Solve applied problems involving vectors. Cognitive Analysis
These would become numbers 8 – 10 under the trigonometric concepts competency.
