Introduction:NeighborhoodWatchProgram
NeighborhoodWatch,BlockWatch,CrimeWatch,BusinessWatch–whateverthename,it'soneofthe
mosteffectiveandleastcostlywaystopreventcrimeandreducefearinyourneighborhood.
NeighborhoodWatchProgramsfighttheisolationandseparationthatcrimecreatesandfeedsupon.It
forgesbondsamongarearesidentsandbusinesses,helpsreduceburglariesandrobberies,and
improvesrelationsbetweenpoliceandthecommunitiestheyserve.
NeighborhoodWatchProgram
NeighborhoodWatchisthecornerstoneoftheLAPD'scrimepreventionstrategy.Itenliststheactive
participationofresidents,incooperationwithlawenforcement,toreducecrimeincommunities
throughouttheCity.
TheNeighborhoodWatchprogramwaspioneeredbytheLosAngelesPoliceDepartmenttoeducate
communityresidentsregardingtheirrolesandresponsibilitiesinthepreventionofcrime,andto
encouragethemtotakeactivemeasurestopreventcrime.Theprogramcallsuponresidentstostep
forwardandassistthepoliceinorganizingthecommunityintoacohesiveunitworkingtowardthegoal
ofbuildingasafer,crime-freeneighborhood.NeighborhoodWatchgroupsdiscussneighborhoodcrime
problemswiththeobjectiveofdevelopingsolutionstolocalproblems.LosAngelesPoliceOfficers
supplycrimeinformationtoneighborhoodwatchorganizationsandinstructthesegroupsinvarious
crimepreventiontechniques.
NeighborhoodLeadsandBlockCaptains
ThecontinuityandsuccessoftheNeighborhoodWatchprogramhingesonthepersonreferredtoasthe
NeighborhoodLeadorBlockCaptain.TheLeadorBlockCaptainisacommunitymemberwhoactsasa
liaisonbetweenthosewhoworkand/orliveinaparticulararea,andtheofficersassignedtothatarea.
ThroughtheLeadorBlockCaptain,andthroughneighborhoodmeetings,officerspassalongcrime
preventiontipsandinformationtomembersofthecommunity.Thisliaisonismaintainedonan
informalbasiswithintheframeworkoftheNeighborhoodWatchgroup.

•Someonelookingintowindowsandparkedcars
•Unusualnoises
•Propertybeingtakenoutofhouseswherenooneisathomeorabusinessisclosed
•Cars,vans,ortrucksmovingslowlywithoutapparentdestination,orwithoutlights
•Anyonebeingforcedintoavehicle
•Astrangersittinginacarorstoppingtotalktoachild
•Anyunusualactivityoractivitiesatunusualtimes
Reporttheseincidentstothepolicedepartmentatthetimeofincident.ThennotifyyourBlock
CaptainorWatchLead.
