30 Years Counseling and Preventing Child Abuse
Dear Friends,
I’m truly overwhelmed with gratitude by all the generous donors that have supported our programs and continue to
help the Center grow and prosper. It warms my heart and would make my husband very proud that what we helped
start many years ago is a sanctuary for the wonderful children and their families that we work with daily. I would be
remiss if I also did not thank my dear friend Nelda Linsk who together with our Director, John Thoresen, worked with
the executor of the estate of our long-time supporter Cal Vander Woude who contributed over $1,000,000 to
our Children’s Center this past year.
I was so pleased to be able to attend the recent Teen Self-Esteem graduation for the nearly 20 girls and boys who
completed the 8-week program. These are children who have progressed in individual counseling and are benefitted by
an additional group program. To see firsthand those children grow with renewed hope and trust is such a tribute to the
fine work of our therapists and the instructors in the program. I wish everyone could experience the joy I see on the
faces of the parents, grandparents, and guardians as their children, who have suffered so much, exhibit a new level of
self-esteem.
I wish all of you a happy and healthy 2017, and again thank you for all you contribute in terms of dollars, volunteering,
and making our Children’s Center such an outstanding institution.
With my love and gratitude,
Barbara Sinatra

Note from the President
Greetings, as we begin the new year, I would like to reflect on the successes of the past year.
The Champion Honors Luncheon featuring baseball legend Hank Aaron being interviewed by the former
Commissioner of Baseball Bud Selig was informative and entertaining. The luncheon attended by 700 people
received a preview of the new “Protect Yourself Rules” child abuse prevention videos for grades K-3 and 4-6. Last
September, the Center launched the videos on the internet and the response has been overwhelmingly favorable
both domestically and internationally. The treatment of child abuse is addressed through counseling, however
giving the children the tools to “protect themselves” will give them the knowledge and power to prevent and
thwart a potential instance of abuse. The therapists, staff and board are very proud of this new program, as preventing children from
abuse is our goal. The videos can be found at www.fightchildabuse.org.
December was a joyous time for the children. The Center was aglow with holiday decorations. Once again, the Affiliates outdid
themselves to provide the children with a party featuring a magician, baton twirler, Santa and refreshments. Of course, Christmas
would not be complete without presents. The fire department arrived with three fire engines and the fire fighters handed out toys to
the children. To see their smiling faces was truly rewarding.
2017 promises to be an equally exciting year. On March 3rd, 2017, the Champion Honors Luncheon will feature Michael Phelps,
America’s most decorated Olympian. Make your reservations early as we expect it to sell out.
The children we serve could not have the care and counseling without your support. On behalf of the board, therapists and staff,
we thank you.
On a personal note, a special thank you to the Affiliates. They are the pulse of the Center, planning and executing parties, self-esteem
graduations and special events. They work tirelessly with joy and love.
Thank you for the privilege to serve as your president. Wishing you a happy and healthy new year.
Angie Gerber, President of the Board
Note from the Director
On behalf of the Board of Directors and the staff, first let me thank the donors listed in this newsletter who
have provided the support necessary to help the children and their families we serve every day at the Barbara
Sinatra Children’s Center. I also want to thank the many donors who this past holiday season brought in a
number of toys, games, clothes, and gift cards that afforded us the opportunity to distribute those items to our
patients and their families that made for a more special holiday.
We continue to be good stewards of the annual donations and endowment that allows us to provide both
the services here at the Children’s Center and provide national and international awareness and prevention with our national “Protect
Yourself Rules” program for children in grades K-6. This last fiscal year ended with another operational surplus and assets that exceeded
$25 million. The new Barbara Sinatra Children’s Center Foundation is now the repository of our largest assets in the investment and
endowment pool.
I want to encourage our wonderful donors and friends to consider a bequest or planned gift that helps assure the legacy that
Barbara and Frank started over 31 years ago grows and prospers well into the future. I would encourage you to visit the “Leave a
Legacy” tab at the foundation website (www.bsccfoundation.org) to explore the myriad of tools available to you. Always seek
professional counsel in determining the best avenue for a potential planned gift.
Lastly, the Champion Honors Luncheon is such a wonderful event to attract new aunts and uncles to the Children’s
Center. I encourage you to bring a prospect on March 3 and all will be treated to another high energy, fun, and
wonderful event.
Happy and healthy new year and thank you!
John E. Thoresen, Director/Executive Officer

National “Protect Yourself Rules”
Initiative — Great Results
The Barbara Sinatra Children’s Center Foundation launched the National “Protect Yourself Rules” initiative in September for the
back-to-school timeframe. The response has been fabulous. As of the first of the year, the website www.fightchildabuse.org has
seen 3,000 sessions and nearly the same amount of downloads of materials and views of the videos. We have seen activity in
every state of the union and many countries around the world.
The kindergarten lesson plan and student activities books are the most downloaded item by users that include teachers, afterschool providers and parents. Also heavily downloaded are the pre-screening guidance and the entire K-3 video file. After
Grade K, the next most used materials are from grades 1, 4, 3 and 6.
Working with McCabe Message Partners in Washington, DC, the initiative has gained outstanding national support and
endorsement from the following groups: The National YMCA, the National Rural Education Association, the International
Forensic Nurses Association, Association of American Educators, Association of School Psychologists, the National Summer
Learning Association and others.
The next push will be starting next month to get as many teachers and schools nationwide to help children protect themselves
by showing the videos during National Child Abuse Prevention Month in April.
Needless to say, we are extremely delighted with the response to our national and international outreach with the development
and distribution of these animated videos and the collateral material. What Barbara and Frank Sinatra started over 30 years
ago on the campus of Eisenhower Medical Center is now reaching children all over the world. In the future we hope to add
additional video lessons, provide the videos in other languages, and work on bringing leaders together from throughout the
United States to help shape an agenda that encourages schools to take an aggressive approach in grades K-6 to bring awareness
and help protect children from abuse.
The Board of Trustees of the Children’s Center and the Foundation are to be congratulated for having the foresight to fund this
outstanding venture. n

Hocus Focus —
A New Group
Therapy Program
Utilizing Magic
The Barbara Sinatra Center for Abused Children’s eightweek Hocus Focus Magic Group was held a few months
ago and proved to be a big success, led by the talented
James Salisbury and Pam Hudgens (aka. McHugh and the
Amazing Pamela). Both boys and girls from the Children’s Center, ages 7 -14, participated
and learned not only unique magic tricks, but also a set of life skills, expertly woven into the
program by James and Pamela.
Team work and spirit, courtesy and manners were presented in a positive and fun approach,
and the children were very receptive to the principles of the group. A graduation was held for
the children to show their parents/families what they learned, and they very enthusiastically
and proudly shared their new magic expertise!
In this weekly group session, magician McHugh uses magic as creative tool to build selfexpression, self-identity, and appropriate communication. As a group activity, magic
encourages the children to learn a trick and perform it for the group, using their own dialogue
and patter. This process develops assertiveness, leadership skills, problem-solving skills and
increases appropriate social interaction. It also raises self-esteem, encourages independence,
provides positive social experiences, and enhances communication and management skills. n
Case Study
The client is a 6-year-old Caucasian boy referred by Child Protective Services, living with
his grandparents, due to his biological parents’ drug addiction history and family violence.
The grandmother sought treatment at the Children’s Center, as the grandparents are the
sole guardians. He has been with grandparents on and off most of his life. The grandmother
is not sure about wanting to take on the lifelong responsibility of raising this boy. At home,
the boy is acting out by throwing things, hitting, yelling and being defiant. He is now
enrolled in a pre-K program and is functioning well there. Treatment goals have included
referring the grandparents to the Center’s parenting skills classes; for the boy, treatment
goals include behavioral modification, such as keeping his hands to himself, and to reduce
history of bad nightmares. For the nightmares, the therapist has successfully worked on
restructuring his thoughts, called Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, where he now incorporates
the belief of feeling safe and secure in his bedroom. His nightmares have stopped over
the few months he has been treated at the Center. Additional issues to be addressed will
incorporate working through loss and grief feelings regarding the abandonment of his
parents. Also, age appropriate education about drugs and alcohol will be provided in
therapy. As the client’s symptoms are reducing and subsiding, the grandmother is now
considering commitment to long term guardianship, and possible adoption. n

Children Enjoy the Holidays
with a Spectacular Party
A very big THANK YOU to all of our generous donors and supporters for contributing to our children’s Holiday Party. We are
so appreciative of our wonderful Affiliates for putting the party together, which included a magic show with the very talented
magician McHugh and the Amazing Pamela, a baton twirling performance by Jessica Jordon, and a visit from Santa (aka. Scott
Hooten). The party wasn’t complete until we received our annual visit from the Rancho Mirage and Palm Desert fire fighters,
who distributed toys to the children.
We’d also like to thank the following people for donating toys and gift cards to our children: Board Members: Jackie Autry,
Marta Danks, Angie Gerber, Andy Gladstein, Teri Ketover, Louise Korshak, Michael Landes, Carole Haes Landon, Harold
Matzner, Missy McCarthy and Jane Saltonstall, as well as Magician McHugh and the Amazing Pamela, Jessica Jordon, our
community fire fighter’s “Spark of Love” toy drive with Mission Hills Golf Club, City of Rancho Mirage Fire Fighters, City of
Palm Desert Fire Fighters, PetSmart’s “Chance and Lucky” program and the Palm Desert PetSmart Town Center, Hard Rock
Hotel Palm Springs, Gelson’s Market Rancho Mirage, Sonus Hearing Care Professionals - both Hemet and Corona locations,
Dolly Sinatra Lodge, Ann Marie Lynn and Elita Hemmati with Fox Entertainment.
We are so grateful to you all for supporting the work we do and for making our children’s holidays so much brighter this year! n

The Psychobiology of Hope
In October, two of our therapists attended an excellent seminar in Palm Springs on the Psychobiology of Hope, presented by Jaime
Kurtz, PhD. Many principles and characteristics of hope were presented, and it addressed how hope can relieve pain, anxiety, fatigue and
trauma. The psychology of hope and how it can be used in the therapy setting was emphasized. It has been researched and documented
that hope is related to optimism, self-esteem, meaning in life, and happiness. Higher hope levels in children is consistently related to
better academics and graduation rates, as well as higher GPA, improved physical health —
better adjustment to chronic illness, severe
injury, and handicaps (see Sneder, Rand, & Sigmon, 2005 for a review), and psychological adjustment — positive moods and thoughts.
Children with a more hopeful outlook and approach demonstrate lower levels of anxiety and depression.
Many handouts, surveys and activities were distributed to use with children to increase their impulse control, self-care, and compassion.
What do hopeful people do?
A clear strategy: They have plans to achieve their goal.
Motivation: They have the initiative to implement their plans.
Personal power: A deeply held belief that they can do it.
Impulse control: They are able to stay focused on the long term goals, even in the face of temptation.
Self-care: They have healthy habits for sleep, diet, exercise, especially when stressed.
Self-compassion: They are a “friend to themselves.”
They forgive themselves their (inevitable) slip-ups, realizing that everyone has them.
Growth mindset: The belief that effort is the key to success. n

Community outreach targets different populations to provide education and awareness. On October 19th, BSCC participated in
the Mecca Resource Fair, which is held annually. The purpose of the fair was to reach out to families (parents and children) about
resources available in Riverside County. BSCC had a booth with information about the centers mission, clinical services, facts,
education, safety, and awareness. This fair had over 500 people in attendance.
On December 7th, BSCC participated in a college fair for seniors at Amistad High School. BSCC had a booth with clinical information
for students interested in a career path in psychology or related field. This is the second year Amistad High School extended the
invitation to BSCC. The goal is to motivate students about the importance of continuing education after high school. n

New Victim Family Advocate
Position at the Barbara Sinatra
Children’s Center
In response to the recent Governor’s Office Grant received by the BSCC that requires us to
have an advocate assist the families of abuse victims with a variety of services, Isabel Tovar, who has
been a medical receptionist and clinical support staff member for the past 9 years, has been promoted
to Clinical Operations Assistant/Victim Family Advocate. Isabel is currently in training to receive her
certificate and we expect she will start formal advocacy later this month. Isabel will help the families
with transportation, receiving victim compensation, and helping them understand the legal process relative to the prosecution of the
abuse perpetrator. During a forensic interview or a forensic medical exam, Isabel will be present to lend support to each family. Nearly
500 such cases occur annually at the Children’s Center. n

State-of-the-Art Forensic
Recording Equipment Installed
Thanks to a grant from the Eisenhower Auxiliary, new state-of-the-art recording equipment was installed for the Multi-disciplinary
Forensics Team at the Barbara Sinatra Children’s Center. The new equipment includes a 32-inch TV monitor so law enforcement,
CPS workers and representatives from the District Attorney’s office do not have to watch the interview on a small computer monitor.
With the recent remodeling project, the interview room as well as the equipment and viewing room were upgraded. Denise Bowman,
who is the lead forensic interviewer, shares an office with Forensic Nurse, Diana Faugno, and their space was also improved. The
equipment is vital to the evidence gathering support in the criminal investigations of suspected child abuse in the area.
A day long interview was recently conducted by agents of the FBI and Las Vegas police who had not been to the Barbara Sinatra
Center previously. The lead FBI interviewer and the detectives from Las Vegas were very impressed with the high quality of our
facility and the equipment and made a point to seek out John Thoresen to compliment the Center.
Over 400 forensic interviews were conducted at the BSCC this past year which totals more than 33% of child abuse forensic
interviews in all of Riverside County. n

Champion Honors Luncheon Continued from cover
Event Chair and Center Trustee, Helene Galen, indicated, “We are delighted Michael
Phelps is coming to share some outstanding stories of life and accomplishment with
us. Michael has a history of giving back to children as evidenced by his efforts with
the Michael Phelps Foundation and that fits well with what the Barbara Sinatra
Center does making a difference in the lives of the children it serves.” Hal Gershowitz,
Co-Chair of the Host Committee, states, “We are expecting the same kind of
entertainment, energy, and surprises at this year’s event, as we enjoyed last year.
After the 2008 Summer Olympics, Phelps started the Michael Phelps Foundation,
which focuses on growing the sport of swimming and promoting healthier lifestyles.
Phelps retired following the 2012 Olympics, but in April 2014 he made a comeback.
At the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, his fifth Olympics, he won five
golds and one silver.
John Thoresen, Chief Executive Officer of the Children’s Center, expects luncheon
tickets to go quickly. “While we have a history of attracting world class athletes and
sports executives to our luncheon, this will be our first Olympian, and America’s most decorated athlete. We are very excited to
have Michael serve as our headliner especially following an Olympic summer and a full schedule,” Thoresen added. People wishing
tables of 10 or individual tickets are encouraged to contact the Children’s Center at 760-773-1636 for more information. n
