St Mary’s Traditional Christmas Cracker
Blues, Ragtime, Jazz, Songs and Dances There will a great deal of toe‐tapping when the incredible POCKET ORCHESTRA comes to play in the beautifully restored Music Room at St Mary’s. These three multi‐talented young musicians released their first album in 2012, with the aim of presenting a contempo‐
rary slant on popular music from the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Working backwards from the music of the 1930s they developed a joyous sound, through the several instruments they play, that spans a wide range of musical tastes. A unique experience. 'Atmospheric, yet vibrant, this charming collection of songs will make you wish you had been born some 100 years ago. The style, glamour and ‘fabulousness’ of this era is captured beauti‐
fully.' Jazz FM review. With wine and canapés £27.50 Saturday 19 November at 7.30pm Flanders and Swann

He introduces us to the sensational events that happened after the disaster and gives an account of the fiasco surrounding the 112 potential Addresses, Lord Holland’s efforts to persuade the reluctant BYRON to save the day, the riots that followed, and the appearance of a small book of parodies that became a publishing phenomenon. revered British actor, his career, his faith, his married life, his family. From Great Expectations to Star Wars, from Lawrence of Arabia to Dr Zhivago, and his starring roles as the eight members of the Gascoigne family in Kind hearts and Coronets, the fascinating story of his life unfolds, set against a background of the golden days of British film and theatre. This play enjoyed a British national tour in 2011, and an acclaimed run at London’s Leicester Square Theatre and the Yvonne Arnaud Theatre, Guildford. ‘Burgess has clearly woven personal anecdotes that reflect Guinness’s choice of roles ‐ a fascinating evening.’ Christopher Locatelli. ‘Littledale is a superbly talented actor with an ability to look like someone else with a simple change of body language, facial expression or voice. An evening to remember.’ Surrey Advertiser. With tea and cake £27.50 Saturday 30 July at 3pm St. Mary’s Traditional Palm Court Tea
SHELLEY VAN LOEN violin with her PALM COURT STRINGS Another welcome return of this much‐loved virtuoso ensemble, who will perform a programme of ear‐tingling popular classics in a mood of nostalgia, in the delightful setting of our elegant Victorian Music Room. Shelley and her musicians have performed in many venues throughout Great Britain, including the Royal Albert Hall. They have appeared several times on TV, including Agatha Christie’s Poirot. They have played for the Queen on a number of occasions and have a particular fondness for their St. Mary’s audiences. Shelley is also a professional confectioner and, to celebrate the Queen’s 90th Birthday, each member of the audience will be presented with a special handmade ‘chocolate surprise’. With full traditional English afternoon tea (limited seating for this event). With full afternoon tea £35 Saturday 20 August at 3pm Mark Bebbington piano
plays major works by Beethoven, Chopin, Liszt and John Ireland. The programme includes Beethoven’s heroic and romantic Sonata no. 23 in F minor, one of the most technically challenging of his piano sonatas. We shall also hear one of Chopin’s Nocturnes and the popular Barcarolle. The programme ends with Liszt’s virtuoso Opera Paraphrase on Rigoletto. Mark is also the principal exponent of the music of John Ireland, the most famous of our local composers, and will include a performance of Ireland’s masterpiece Sarnia – a depiction of aspects of the Channel Islands, where he lived happily for a time. We have great pleasure in welcoming Bruce Phillips, Chairman of the John Ireland Trust, who will give a brief introduction to Ireland’s work. Mark’s forthcoming concerts include a tour with the Czech National Orchestra, concertos with the Royal Philharmonic and London Philharmonic Orchestras, his New York recital debut, and a three‐week tour with the Israel Camerata Chamber Orchestra. revolutionary Russian ecstasy'. Also on the programme are Mahler’s only surviving chamber work, his passionate and brooding piano quartet movement in A minor, and ‐ bringing all six performers together ‐ Prokofiev's wildly entertaining Overture on Hebrew Themes. The Brighton Chamber Ensemble is a flexible group of Sussex‐
based musicians, many of whom met while playing in the Dartington Festival Orchestra. They perform in many configurations from duo up to sextet and also specialise in works for larger combinations of instruments. With tea and cake £27.50
