Language Arts 5 –
This course focuses on variety of literary, expository and informational texts. This course introduces
students to literacy skills such as plot, setting, characterization and theme. Course topics include genre
studies that expose students to various World literature; literary analysis of poetry, drama, fiction;
analyzing various nonfiction texts; and reading comprehension of informational texts. Targeted skills
lessons teach students how to analyze and evaluate text for success on standardized assessments. The
writing process is taught through expository and persuasive writing. Students will also be introduced to
literary analysis with fables, folk tales, and myths.

Reading Grade 5 Flannery O’Connor – Author Study
Born in 1925, Flannery O‘Connor was a true product of the American South. She‘s been labeled a
―Southern Gothic‖ writer, and her stories are filled with imagery of the South, religion (especially
Catholicism), and the grotesque. Her short stories intersect faith and violence in symbolic and allegorical
conflicts, challenging readers to move beyond surface interpretations to look at the deeper implications
of such a conflict. This author study includes a biography, a personal article, and three short stories by
O‘Connor: ―Everything That Rises Must Converge,‖ ―A Good Man is Hard to Find,‖ and ―Good
Country People.‖
Skills covered in this course: Components of an Author Study, Biographies, Making Inferences, Influence
of Setting, Discerning Fact from Opinion, Allegory, Characterization, Symbolism, Reader Empathy, and
Symbolic Conflict and Irony.
Language Arts 6 –

the concepts of literary skills including: plot, setting, characterization, and theme in various short stories.
Course topics include genre studies; world literature; literary analysis of drama; analyzing nonfiction,
such as speeches, biographies, and memoirs; and reading comprehension of informational texts.
Targeted skills lessons teach students how to analyze and evaluate text for success on standardized
tests. The writing process is taught in each essay; expository, narrative, literary analysis, creative and
functional essays are all included in the course. Students will also study informational texts related to
health, government life and environmental reading comprehension.

Reading – Grade 6
The Call of the Wild by Jack London
First published in 1903, The Call of the Wild is regarded as Jack London's masterpiece. Based on
London's experiences as a gold prospector in the Canadian wilderness and his ideas about nature and
the struggle for existence, The Call of the Wild is a tale about unbreakable spirit and the fight for survival
in the frozen Alaskan Klondike. This gripping story follows the adventures of the loyal dog Buck, who is
stolen from his comfortable family home and forced into the harsh life of an Alaskan sled dog. Passed
from master to master, Buck embarks on an extraordinary journey that ends with his becoming the
legendary leader of a wolf pack.
This course focuses on the author and the author’s purpose as well as the novel itself.
5th grade Math –
This course focuses on the following math concepts to integrate problem-solving skills for success.
Students will understand whole numbers, estimating whole numbers, order of operations, mental math
that includes: describing a pattern, variables and expressions, writing algebraic expressions and one-step
equations. Students will also learn skills related to decimals, fractions, statistics, plane geometry and
measurement. These lessons are designed to be integrated into the regular classroom or may be used as
a mini-unit course. Various learning strategies are used to apply the skill concepts.

6th Grade Math – MA1098
This course focuses on statistics with an in-depth focus on the following: estimation, powers and
exponents, algebra equations, ratio/proportion/percent, statistics. Students will also learn rational
number systems (whole numbers, integers, fractions, decimals), plane geometry (including
measurement and symmetry), introduction to variables and formulas, patterns, simple equations,
number theory, probability, and functions. Opportunities for the development of middle school PreAlgebra problem-solving skills are also included.
Learning strategies include working backwards, making a table, and creating a pattern.

5th grade Social Studies –
This course will provide students an opportunity to learn the diverse history that has shaped our world.
It begins by exploring United States history including the Preamble and Bill of Rights. The growth of the
United States is explored with a focus on the new empires in the Americas, colonization and settlement
of the United States as well as the revolution and forming of a government.
Students will investigate various aspects of World History as well. The exploration in Europe and
expansion of early Asia and Africa are uncovered. Students will explore the rise of the monarchies as
well as the revolution of these countries. There will also be an overview of geography for these areas.
This course aligns to the National Social Studies standards and specifically addresses performance
objectives focused on history, government, economics, geography, culture, and social studies skills.

6th grade Social Studies – SS1106
This course provides a comprehensive overview of World History. Students will study the geography,
climates, people and development of Early India, Ancient China, Ancient Greece, Africa, Japan & the
Koreas, Asia and the Middle East. The exploration of Europe, the colonization of Central and South
America, Latin America and Mexico are also provided with an in-depth overview of their world today.
This course is strictly aligned to state and national standards.

5th grade Science:
This course encompasses various units which cover many aspects of earth and environmental sciences.
Topics included will be the study of Ecology; the Biosphere; the land, forests and soil; the water; energy
and resources; and societies and policy. Students will also be introduced to biology skill concepts such as
plant life and animals. Aspects connected to human Biology and Health are introduced such as the
skeletal, muscular, digestive, circulatory, respiratory, nervous and endocrine systems. Environmental
Science contains Global Connections lessons which include unique activities that merge lesson material
with real world issues pertaining to the environment. A unit on space science exposes students to the
interactions of the earth, moon, and sun and an overview. This course contains activities such as

6th grade Science:
This course covers many aspects of Earth science, including an overview of the Earth’s structure, rocks,
minerals, and resources. A major unit on the forces that change the Earth includes lessons on plate
tectonics, earthquakes, volcanoes, and erosion, concluding in a section that discusses Earth’s history of
change through the fossil record. A general study of oceanography explores such concepts as the
sources of water, currents and climate, and the structure of the ocean environment. Atmospheric
science with lessons in weather and climate are also included. This course for students offers a broad
experience in the biological sciences as well as human health and body systems. Students will learn
health concepts such as the respiratory and excretion systems as well as knowledge about immunity and
disease.

Students who participate in a partial day program with the cyber service will participate in the areas of
art, music, and physical education in their regular day. Full-time cyber students who are participating in
an outside activity that involves one or more of these areas may obtain the necessary hours through
their participation. A variety of opportunities will be offered for full-time students who need to meet the
necessary hours for art, music and physical education.
Healthy Living – EL2081
This course is designed to encourage students to make responsible, respectful, informed, and capable
decisions about topics that affect the well-being of themselves and others. The course provides students
with comprehensive information, which they can utilize to develop healthy attitudes and behavior
patterns. Areas to be explored include: peer pressure; dangers of tobacco use; dangers of alcohol use
and medicine/illegal drugs. This course contains activities such as vocabulary, online content, journals,
