Job Purpose/Introduction: Faculty Lead Mentors are upper year students who will work in the department of International Student Support (ISS). These students will provide extensive peer advice, disseminate specialized information and knowledge, and assist in providing support to international students for a smoother transitional experience to Ryerson University and Toronto as a whole. The lead mentors will assist international students in their awareness of intercultural experiences as they transition to Ryerson University. Faculty Lead Mentors will work closely with the International Transitional Lead and be responsible for providing the best experience to members of the international community. Faculty Lead Mentors are 1 | P a g e expected to develop and facilitate transitional support by promoting cross‐cultural understanding, diversity, and community among international students. The lead mentors will serve as a positive role model and strong support to a group of international students within their faculty. Faculty Lead Mentors will have extensive knowledge of information and services related to international students, Ryerson community, and be a Canadian cultural guide. Job Duties & Responsibilities: Assisting in the planning, organizing and facilitation of international events, programs, transitional support, arrival and pre‐arrival support for international students Proactively supporting international students in their transition to Ryerson University and Toronto by providing information and referrals to appropriate campus resources Sharing knowledge about Canadian culture and experience as an international students to actively engage in cross‐cultural dialogue with international students to learn about one another’s cultures Optimizing the experience of new international students at Ryerson University by supporting the successful transition of international students to university and Canadian life through active student engagement Marketing international events and programs, and campus events through the creation and distribution of promotional materials to students and around campus Creating a safe, open‐minded, non‐judgmental, and culturally sensitive environment which encourages international students to ask questions, discuss their concerns by maintaining regular contact with international students Maintaining confidentiality of international students under the guidance of International Student Advisors, and International Transitional Lead Encouraging active involvement in the international student services community by attending, participating, and volunteering at events organized by international student support Maintaining contact with international students as needed through their preferred method of communication (i.e. telephone, text, email, social media, in‐person, etc.).
