Paraphrase Author’s Words 1. The thousand injuries of Fortunato I had borne as I best could; but when he ventured upon insult, I vowed revenge. 2. You who so well know the nature of my soul, will not suppose however, that I gave utterance to a threat. 3. At length, I would be avenged; this was a point definitively settled – but the very definitiveness with which it was resolved precluded the idea of risk. 4. I must not only punish, but punish with impunity. 5. A wrong is unredressed when retribution overtakes its redresser. 6. It is equally unredressed when the avenger fails to make himself felt as such to him who has done the wrong. 1. The many wounds that I suffered from Fortunato I endured as best as I could; but when he dared to insult me I swore my revenge. 2. Those who know me really well, know that I did not threaten Fortunato outloud. 3. In time, I would get my revenge; that was for certain -‐ but I needed to plan so that I prevented risk to myself. 4. I must punish Fortunato without having any consequences. 5. The wrongs done to me will not be set right if I get punished. 6. It is also not set right if I fail to make myself known to Fortunato.
