It is essential you weave outside information in your answer. White settlers in the states of Georgia, Mississippi, and Alabama were clamoring over the fertile land held by the remaining Indian settlements. Prior presidents have been involved in policies that promoted Indian removal, but the underlying policy towards Indians was assimilation. The Five Civilized Tribes, located in the region had adopted many cultural values held by white society, but that was not enough – the white settlers were anxious to expand and coveted their fertile land. The Cherokee Indians, in particular had adopted a constitution, a written language, and agrarian way of life. The states, Georgia, Mississippi, and Alabama will assert authority over the Indians located within the state boundaries. Jackson will support states rights in this matter and will advocate an Indian Removal Act which will give him the authority to purchase land or forcibly remove them. The matter ends up in the Supreme Court, in Worcester v. Georgia, the court denied the right of states to extend their jurisdiction over Indian land, but Jackson and his supporters ignored the ruling. The Cherokees were the last hold outs and eventually forced off their land by the US military on foot which resulted in the Trail of Tears. Several thousand Indians died on the march as this event was depicted the prejudice and greed of the time period.
