The Geneva Foundation, the philanthropic power behind Presbyterian
Homes, ensures your giving gets our community closer to our mission.
Your generosity – through memorial gifts, memory care garden, employee
scholarship, fellowship fund or a-yet-to-be-discovered-opportunity –
defines why we call this place home and reminds us why we stay. This annual
report shares the stories of donors who made a gift to the Geneva Foundation
in their own special way, yet got so much more than they gave.

M A K E IT
MEANINGFUL
ALTHOUGH HE’S A RELATIVE
NEWCOMER , Dr. Charles (call me “Charlie”)
Mudd quickly caught the generous spirit that is
spreading throughout the Westminster campus.
Maybe it’s because Charlie and his wife Joan are
predisposed to supporting important causes.
The Mudds raised five children in Evanston while
Dr. Mudd worked as a pathologist at Swedish
Covenant Hospital.
After facing a difficult family loss, Charlie and
Joan together with their children formed the Mudd
Family Foundation. They are proud to support
organizations that are closely aligned to the mission of
their family foundation, like the Geneva Foundation.
MAKE IT PER SONAL
MOLLY HEIZER HAS ONE RULE FOR CHOOSING WHERE TO MAKE A
CHARITABLE CONTRIBUTION: Pick an organization that supports a cause you believe
in, and get to know the people before you make the gift. That’s what Molly did when she made a
gift to the Memory Care Support Center at Lake Forest Place.
After Charlie had a mild stroke, he moved to
The Highlands of Evanston at Westminster Place
for additional support. As he and Joan learned
about the work of the Geneva Foundation, they
were inspired to make a significant gift.
“When we thought about an older person running
out of money, we knew we had to do something,”
explains Charlie. “We knew we had to help.”
With an infectious smile Charlie adds, “The
Geneva Foundation is simply a great program.”
Not long after Molly and her husband Ned moved into a cottage at Lake Forest Place, he was diagnosed
with Parkinson’s disease. Ned had been a seminal figure in the venture capital industry, where he
saw the promise in companies such as Federal Express and International House of Pancakes. He
later founded the Heizer Center for Private Equity and Venture Capital at Northwestern Kellogg.
As Ned’s condition progressed, he moved to the Lake Forest Place Memory Care Support Center. It
was there where Molly learned the type of care required for someone whose diagnoses also included
Lewy Body Dementia. “The staff did such a good job in the Memory Care Support Center, and
in the process, made such a personal connection with me and Ned.”
After Ned died in 2009, Molly went to Lisa Schiro, Senior Director of Development
at the Geneva Foundation, and told her, “I want to do something to help improve
the lives of residents in the memory care unit,” explains Molly. “Lisa took me
to several places in the city to look at innovations in memory care. She helped me
understand the options that were out there.”
GIVE
Because I knew
we could help.
Molly decided to make a gift to support ongoing Dementia Care Training for the
staff of the Memory Care Support Center. “I’m not surprised Molly’s gift benefits
the staff,” says Lisa Schiro. “Molly told me one of Ned’s greatest strengths was that
he believed in the investment in people.” Molly continues her involvement in the
Memory Care Support Center and can see her donations at work.

IF THERE IS ONE PERSON IN THIS
ANNUAL REPORT WHOSE STORY
SPEAKS VOLUMES ABOUT THE
POWER OF GENEROSITY, IT IS
FATMIR MADHI. Some 12 years ago,
Fatmir and his family came to the United States
from Albania. He did not speak any English.
T H E P OW E R
OF KINDNESS
Within a year, he was hired at The Moorings of
Arlington Heights as an employee in the Building
and Grounds Department. “My English wasn’t
good,” he says emotionally. “But everyone was so
patient with me. They took their time with me.”
Fatmir fights back the tears as he remembers
the kindness he was shown as a new employee.
So moved by the thoughtfulness of residents
and employees, Fatmir decided to become an
Employee Payroll Donor. Every week, he has a
deduction from his paycheck which he directs
to the Geneva Foundation’s Fellowship Fund.
He cares deeply about the residents he sees daily
and knows his donations will help their future.
Today, Fatmir is a beloved employee. His wife
Merita works in the Dining Room at The
Moorings, and the couple are the proud parents
of two children, ages 15 and 9.
“I’m so happy to work here,” smiles Fatmir.
“I’m happy to help other people.”
And that means a lot in any language.
THE GIVING TREE
“I USED TO WALK AROUND THE GROUNDS OF LAKE
FOREST PLACE WITH MY PARENTS,” recalls Kathy Boland.
“Occasionally we would see a plaque in front of a tree. We would stop
to read it and we all thought that was so special.”
Kathy is the daughter of Helen and Lewis Landreth, long-time residents
of Lake Forest Place. “My parents always lived on wooded lots because
my mom loved trees. When she died 13 years ago, I suggested we commemorate a tree in her honor on the Lake Forest Place Campus. The tree
was planted right outside the apartment window so my dad could watch
it grow. A plaque was installed at the base of the tree and we read Joyce
Kilmer’s poem, Trees at our dedication for Mom,” she continues.
“Dad would always suggest that we stroll over to see ‘mom’s tree’ whenever we visited him.”
“It makes me happy
to help other people.”
- FATMIR MADHI

This past spring, Lewis passed away at the age of 97. “When dad passed, we thought that Mom’s plaque
should be replaced so that it could honor both our parents. At the dedication of the new plaque, my
brother wrote, ‘trees are rooted in the earth and they measure the passage of time as they grow.’ What a
lovely thought,” Kathy says smiling.
How true. In time, the Landreth’s tree has provided beauty and shade for other families who walk the
grounds. It has become a reminder of the generous people who were part of the community of
Lake Forest Place – a legacy that touches future generations.

GENEROSITY
LIVES ON
IF THERE IS ONE LEGACY PETER
CHERRY INHERITED FROM HIS FOLKS,
IT’S A GENEROUS HEART. Peter’s parents,
Virginia and Walter Cherry, were residents of
Westminster Place and long-time donors to the
Geneva Foundation. Walter Cherry was a serious
inventor and founded Cherry Corporation, an
electrical switch manufacturer back in 1953.
Through the years, his parents each supported
organizations that connected to their passions. “Mom
believed in caring for people so she supported the
Rehabilitation Institute and Winnetka Congregational
Church. Dad was a big advocate of education and a
strong proponent of STEM (Science, Math, Engineering
and Technology) so he was a donor to MSI (Museum
of Science and Industry) and IIT.”
A BENEVOLENT
CONNECTION
ALICE POLITO, 95, A RESIDENT OF WESTMINSTER PLACE,
TAUGHT HER FAMILY WELL ABOUT VOLUNTEERING AND
GIVING BACK TO THE COMMUNITY. So great was that lesson that her
daughter, Mary Ellen Miller, has spent her life involved as a volunteer for many worthy
causes and currently donates her time as the President of the Woman’s Board of
Presbyterian Homes. Mary Ellen, substitute teacher, mother of two and grandmother
of six, is proud to be a member of the 102-year-old Woman’s Board and the
extraordinary legacy it provides to the residents and staff at Westminster Place.
The Woman’s Board made a gift of $50,000 to the Geneva Foundation in 2015 in celebration of their Centennial.
Throughout its history the Woman’s Board has supported numerous campaigns and made special gifts that have
improved campus life. But beyond the funding, Mary Ellen believes among the Woman’s Board’s greatest gifts are the
small shops they operate on the Westminster Place campus. “The shops include the Thrift Shop, Book Nook, and 31
Shop along with the Depot Gift Shop, and they create hubs of interaction for residents and volunteers.”
“We are providing a great service. Our shops are accessible by a short walk or elevator ride. We provide a
convenience for residents who can’t get out regularly and the ability to shop economically for staff. Our members
make people feel so welcome,” explains Mary Ellen. Recently, Mary Ellen asked Woman’s Board members to track
store visitors through a clicker system. “It’s amazing. I just got the stats for September and three of the five shops
totaled 1,000 visits in just one month! Remember some of these shops are only open one day a week!”
“The Woman’s Board gives the community so many opportunities for connection. We feel great satisfaction
in spreading our generous spirit throughout the campus.”
6
2016 An n ual R ep ort
Gen eva Foun dat ion
But the one place they both agreed on was the Geneva
Foundation. “Dad served on the board of Presbyterian
Homes and later Mom served on the Woman’s Board.
They named Presbyterian Homes as one of 10
beneficiaries of a trust created in honor of my brother
Sam (the Samuel M. Cherry Memorial Charitable
Trust) who died in a non-combat helicopter military
mission in Germany back in 1971,” explains Peter.
“Sam was a lot of fun. A real character, very funny.
He took a detour out of college and joined the military.
It was his choice,” recalls Peter.
And so it is equally fitting that the trust continues
to support the life-affirming work of the Geneva
Foundation. The Cherrys were generous supporters of
numerous fund-raising campaigns, sponsored a stained
glass window in Elliot Chapel, donated to the Kimble
Fitness Center and were members of the Tree of Life
program.
Walter retired in 1996, turning over the company
to his son Peter, with whom he was very close. As
planned, Walter and Virginia moved into a cottage at
Westminster Place. Sadly, Walter died of cancer that
same year. His mother lived on until 2008.
Peter now directs the charitable giving of their estate.
Like his parents, Peter supports organizations he
believes in. “The gift goes to support the annual fund.
It’s a wonderful way to see their dedication to the
Geneva Foundation live on.”

THREE HARDWORKING PEOPLE. LOOKING FOR THE
PROMISE OF AMERICA FIND A NEW HOME. HERE
ARE THE STORIES OF ONE SPECIAL DONOR AND THE
PEOPLE WHOSE LIVES HE HAS TOUCHED.
JENNIFER MOODIE
For Jamaican born Jennifer Moodie, CNA, Presbyterian
Homes has been a family affair. Jennifer and her mother have
worked at Westminster Place for over 30 years. Jennifer began
in housekeeping but today is a CNA and Unit Secretary at
McGaw Health Center.
Jennifer Moodie, Lupe Flores, Fitzroy Brown
QUIETLY
COMPASSIONATE
ANONYMOUS OR OTHERWISE – THE IMPACT OF GIVING CAN BE
POWERFUL. You can see it in the proud faces of Presbyterian Homes employees who
are now U.S. citizens because of the New Hope Scholarship Fund and the donors who
contribute towards it and one (anonymous) donor who personally underwrites all citizenship
costs each year.
This donor prefers to give quietly and anonymously. “While living here I discovered Presbyterian Homes hired
many immigrants of the world. These immigrants really wanted to become U.S. citizens, but found it almost
impossible to muster the resources to pay for the application. I knew I could take some of that burden away.”
Since 2013, this donor has sponsored every New Hope Scholarship application for citizenship on his campus.
“When I learned their stories and attended their citizenship celebration events, I understood the challenges
our employees face every day. I was so grateful to hear the impact I’ve made on someone’s life.” Today, New
Hope Scholarships for Citizenship are offered on all Presbyterian Homes campuses.
This anonymous donor also made a gift in his estate to the Geneva Foundation. A firm believer in the mission
of the Foundation and Presbyterian Homes, this donor says “I wanted to insure the long-term support for the
elderly who need a lifetime of care. It is so important to continue to support those who need it most.”

For many residents, Jennifer’s warm smile, gentle support and
deep understanding are like a gift. “Residents don’t like losing
their independence, some have lost a spouse, others are
dealing with a serious illness. So I smile all day, and in some
small way, I know it brightens their day.”
Recently residents brightened Jennifer’s day by encouraging her
to apply for a New Hope Scholarship as it covers the application fee to become a U.S. citizen. “It means so much to me to
be a citizen. Although I lived in the U.S. for years, at times I felt
like I didn’t belong. Now I do. I even have the privilege to vote!
It was a very generous thing the residents did for me. I have
such gratitude!”
FITZROY BROWN
Fitzroy Brown believes in family. A dedicated member of the
housekeeping team at Westminster Place, Fitzroy never fails to
greet residents like friends. “We’re a a family here. We really do
laugh a lot,” says Fitzroy, who often works seven days a week.
“I came to the United States to find better opportunities for
me and my kids,” explains Fitzroy, who comes from Jamaica.
“I had been working for Presbyterian Homes for two years when I
heard about the New Hope Scholarship during one of our “Stand
Up” staff meetings,” remembers Fitzroy.
This father of five children received a New Hope Scholarship,
which paid for his citizenship application fees and he proudly
became a U.S. Citizen in December 2015.
“I am so proud to be an American,” says Fitzroy. “To everyone
who supports the New Hope Scholarship, I say thank you!”
LUPE FLORES
The story Lupe Flores loves to tell about her
citizenship test goes like this. “I studied so hard.
I had to learn the answers to 100 questions. ‘How
will I ever remember everything,’ I thought. On
the day of the test, the woman asked me three
questions. I got them all right. ‘Ok,’ said the woman,
‘you passed.’ And I said only three questions? Oh
my goodness, you need to ask me more!”
That spirit of striving to do your best, of going
the extra mile, defines Lupe Flores, a Presbyterian
Homes employee for 36 years. Thanks to the New
Hope Scholarship, Lupe became a U. S. Citizen
four years ago. The ninth of 18 children, Lupe
came to the U.S. from Mexico with her parents,
hoping to find work and a new life.
Through the years she has raised three successful,
college-educated daughters, creating that amazing
sense of family among employees and residents,
yet she could never find the resources for the
citizenship application. “When I learned the New
Hope Scholarship would pay for my citizenship I
thought ‘I need to do that!’ Today I can vote, and
do anything for our government. If they need me,
I am here,” she says.
Lupe thinks the resident-funded scholarships
demonstrate the special relationship between
employees and residents. “The residents care about
us and we care about them – just like a family.”

BOB AND NANCY KRET ARE
RELATIVE NEWCOMERS TO THE
MOORINGS OF ARLINGTON
HEIGHTS but they quickly caught the spirit
of generosity that prevails in their community.
The Krets love living at The Moorings. They are
busy in community life and engaged in lots of
activities. But what really caught their interest
is that they can use the surplus of their declining
balance each month to make a gift to the
Geneva Foundation.
“Nancy likes to cook and we still like to go out
with friends, so some months there’s a significant
amount in our declining balance account,”
explains Bob. “Rather than purchase wine or
some other things, we make a donation in the
name of friends,” he continues. “We may not
be the biggest donors, but this was a simple
way to give.”
“There are a number of people here in their 90s,
and some even 100. Who knows how long they
will be here? And what happens if they outlive
their finances?” asks Bob. “It makes us feel good
to support the Geneva Foundation and create
real security for our neighbors.”

Generosity has no finish line
WHEN WE THINK OF GENEROSITY AT THE GENEVA FOUNDATION, WE THINK OF
A SELF-PERPETUATING WHEEL OF HOPE AND KINDNESS. You know how it works. Some
people give to the Geneva Foundation because they hope to make life a little easier for others. Then somewhere on
one of our campuses, a resident who needs financial assistance gets the support and the kindness he or she needs.
Their gratitude radiates throughout the community.
It touches the donor in ways we will never know. It also inspires an employee who has developed warm relationships
with residents. The employee gives part of his or her paycheck to support the residents in need. That’s what families
do. This story of giving gets more people inspired to make a contribution of time, energy, ideas – and many times a gift
– that will fund meaningful improvements in resident life. It could be a new Fitness Center, a tree that provides shade,
support for spiritual life, a citizenship application for an employee. It could inspire a group of residents to walk for a
cause, help the homeless, share their pool with neighborhood children for swim lessons. The giving gets people to
discover the power of generosity that lives inside them and they become quite a force.
Year after year, this force, this generosity, this giving, gets us closer to our mission. The wheel of generosity
makes another turn.
GIVE
Because even the
smallest gift makes
you feel good.
“Without question, the culture here at Presbyterian Homes is different from other senior living communities,”
says Lisa Schiro, Senior Director of Development for the Geneva Foundation. “Our DNA tells us to fuel the
culture of philanthropy and strengthen the legacy of Presbyterian Homes. Residents and their families,
administration, and staff all feel empowered to protect
and grow the Geneva Foundation. Sometimes that means
we are working through a difficult challenge,” continues
Lisa. “There’s give and take. Give a little, get a little,” she
smiles. “Yet, we know that together we will ultimately get
closer to our mission.”
Our Annual report is a once-a-year glance into the amazing
stories we live and breathe each day. They are case studies
in the power of generosity. Most importantly, our
opportunity to say thank you.

THE GOLF OUTING. MOST
RESIDENTS HAVE HEARD
ABOUT IT. SOME RESIDENTS
EVEN PLAY IN IT. There’s a social
gathering afterward for dinner and
camaraderie. It’s an opportunity for
Presbyterian Homes’ business partners to
feel a connection with our community.
Through the years, the Geneva Foundation
Golf Outing has grown to become a
signature fund-raiser for Presbyterian
Homes. In fact, the 2016 Golf Outing
raised nearly $200,000! And all of it
goes to support the Geneva Foundation’s

“Yes, they (Presbyterian Homes) are cost

Lake Forest Place, and current work at The Moorings
of Arlington Heights. “Through the years, our firm
has grown to be a trusted advisor to the organization,
something that transcends the typical consultant
role. We feel more like an extension of them. I have
to say Presbyterian Homes’ love and care for residents
is like nothing I’ve ever seen. They subordinate
everything to resident care. And the Geneva Foundation
underscores this commitment. The fact that the

Fellowship Fund
Through our Fellowship Fund, we ensure that no resident will
be asked to leave our community due to inability to pay. We
extend medical and supportive services to maintain their security,
health, dignity and self-esteem. The Fellowship Fund and
its endowment have grown over the years and have been built
entirely by charitable donations from residents, families and
friends across the entire Presbyterian Homes organization.
Building Fund
Our campuses create a life-affirming environment for all our
residents. Careful attention is paid to both the beautiful
surroundings and state-of-the-art facilities to meet the constantly
evolving needs of residents and services. The Building
Fund supports capital improvements that secure the safety,
convenience and comfort of residents on all of our campuses; as
in the case of the campaign to build a Chapel at The Moorings
of Arlington Heights.
Outreach Fund
In 1904 Presbyterian Homes was founded as an act of benevolence
and grace to provide a home for impoverished older adults. The
Outreach fund is not a handout. It provides Presbyterian Homes
the ability to extend a helping hand to our neighbors in our
surrounding communities.
Operations Fund
The Geneva Foundation has a powerful story – a story worth sharing
with residents, friends of Presbyterian Homes and the communities
that surround our campuses. More than just salaries, the operations of
the Geneva Foundation include a year-round effort to communicate
the far-reaching work of the Foundation with all its constituents.
Thanksgiving Fund
At the heart of Presbyterian Homes is an extraordinary team of
people who are dedicated to meeting the needs of older adults. The
Thanksgiving Fund provides tuition assistance to employees wishing
to further their education, and provides emergency assistance
when catastrophe strikes.
Circle of Community Engagement
Community Engagement initiatives were established at all Presbyterian
Homes communities to create a network of good works and service
to the world beyond our walls. Last year we impacted nearly 5,000 people.
As an organization, Presbyterian Homes believes that community
engagement and service to others is an aspect of total personal wellness.
Each campus engages in different opportunities to help others, and
through this strengthen their own sense of purpose. In the last year
residents and staff have hosted wellness fairs, taught kids how to
swim, packed up meals for the homeless, knitted blankets, collected
school supplies, walked to show support for those in need, collected
coats, packed ready to eat meals for starving children, and played
bingo for charity among many other projects. The wheel above provides
a snapshot of the outreach being done across our organization to
benefit our neighboring communities.
