He attended private school where he learned Latin and Greek. This deal was between the United States and France in which the United States acquired 827,000 square miles of land west of the Mississippi River for $15 million dollars. He spent his remaining years at Monticello. During this time, he founded the University of Virginia. He also sent his collection of 6,487 books to Washington to help restock the Library of Congress after a fire. He died on July 4, 1826.
