Thomas Jefferson was born on April
13, 1743 in Shadwell, Virginia. He had
nine brothers and sisters.

When Thomas was a young boy, he enjoyed
playing in the woods, reading, and practicing the
violin. He attended private school where he learned
Latin and Greek. When he was older, Thomas
attended school at the College of William and
Mary in Williamsburg, Virginia.

Thomas Jefferson lived in a house he
called Monticello in Charlottesville, Virginia.
He spent many years designing,
dismantling, and refurbishing the house
and gardens.

In 1772, Thomas Jefferson married Martha Wayles
Skelton. Together, they had six children. Sadly,
Martha died ten years after they were married.

In 1776, Thomas Jefferson drafted the Declaration
of Independence. After being approved by
congress, copies were delivered by ship and
horseback. The Declaration of Independence is now
in a museum in Washington, D.C.

In 1801, Thomas Jefferson was elected as the 3rd
president of the United States.

In 1803, Thomas Jefferson negotiated a land
deal which became known as the “Louisiana
Purchase”. This deal was between the United
States and France in which the United States
acquired 827,000 square miles of land west of
the Mississippi River for $15 million dollars.

In 1806, Thomas Jefferson sent two skilled
explorers, Lewis and Clark, to find a water
route across North America and to explore
the western part of the country.

Thomas Jefferson’s presidency ended in 1809. He
spent his remaining years at Monticello. During this
time, he founded the University of Virginia. He also
sent his collection of 6,487 books to Washington to
help restock the Library of Congress after a fire.
He died on July 4, 1826.

Did you know?
1) There is writing on the back of the Declaration of Independence that reads:
"Original Declaration of Independence dated 4th July 1776“.
2) Thomas Jefferson died just a few hours before his friend, and fellow president, John
Adams.
3) Thomas Jefferson was a grandfather and great-grandfather and many of the
grandchildren lived with him.
