Respectfully Valuing Others (www.educationworld.com) Can respect and value be taught? Of course it can! Parents do it all the time! Teachers do it, too. Consider how respect and value are woven together in our regular routines: in school and at home with family. Together, with your child, discuss the meaning of value. Talk about the “Golden Rule”—treating others the way you would like to be treated. Have your child make a list of synonyms for the words respect and value. For example, esteem, honor, regard, cherish, appreciate, admire, praise, compliment. It is vital that our kids know and understand—respect and value—that different people have different likes and dislikes. Emphasize that they should treat others respectfully in spite of differences. Respect and value involve patience, open-mindedness, and regard for traditions, differences, age, race, religion, the earth, self, and others. Books to Read with Your Child about Respectfully Valuing Others The Brand New Kid by Katie Couric Teammates by Peter Golenbock Good Apples by Robbie Fearon Night Visitors by Ed Young Miss Rumphius by Barbara Cooney We are heading towards the end of the semester. Unfortunately for some students, this is when detentions start adding up and can turn in to suspensions. Encourage your child to FOLLOW THE RULES. This will keep them on a path to success.
