Fill a vital role in the province
We are seeking an individual who is interested in an opportunity to serve the community in this unique
position. Under the Direction of the Regional Coroner, you will work as an “as-and-when-required with no
designated term date” medico-legal investigator. You must have a degree or diploma in a health, legal or
social sciences field and have five years experience in a related field. An equivalent combination of education
and experience will also be considered. We are seeking individuals who have experience in working
effectively with community stakeholders, conducting investigative inquiries, who possess sound judgment
and excellent communication skills.
This position functions on a rotating on-call basis, and the successful applicant must reside in Houston,
Smithers, Burns Lake, BC or surrounding areas and be available to respond to calls on a 24/7 basis while
on-call. The majority of the work will entail attendance at scenes of death and gathering preliminary
information, assessing the circumstances, liaising with police and other emergency responders, and
providing information and assistance to family. Notes of the preliminary findings will be entered into a
database and details forwarded to staff in the regional office who will undertake any necessary follow-up
investigation.
This position is not open to current provincial government employees, current civilian employees of any
police force or health authority, or anyone in a position which may create potential conflict of interest or
perception of bias or interfere with the impartiality of your role. This is not a salaried position and is not an
appointment under the Public Service Act. Compensation is dependent upon the number of cases and hours
worked, which may vary significantly in each community. If you have the necessary skills to serve in this
interesting and challenging role, then we look forward to your application.
