KINGSBRIDGE COMMUNITY COLLEGE NEWSLETTER - September 2015 01548 852641 www.kingsbridgecollege.org.uk Exam Results We were delighted with this year’s results: Sixth Form GCSE At A level, 63% of all grades were at A*, A and B, sustaining last year’s excellent performances. Top performer, Zak Cole gained a stunning clean sweep of A* grades in the challenging subjects of Biology, Maths, Chemistry and Physics. He is going on to study Chemical Engineering at Bath University. Wilf Rake gained 2 A*s in History and Spanish and an A in English Language to secure his space to study Linguistics at Cambridge University. Josh Mullen, Richard Forman, Tom Morris, Harriet Arscott, Sammi O’Rourke, Charlotte Seymour, Megan Wood all gained at least 3 A*/A grades. Georgina Adams, Hannah Flintham, Victoria Hyde, Alicia Masters, Fynn McCoy, James Peck, Toby Pepperrell, Rob Williams all gained 3 A grades. Will Philbedge gained 2A*s and a B; Seb Ansley 2 As, a B and a C; Connie Beard A*, A and B; Evie Millward A*, A and B; Olivia Rew A*, A and B. A number of students also gained an excellent combination of A Level and Diploma grades at Distinction (equating to top A level grades): Ed Richardson gained a Double Distinction and 2 As; Angus Breton a Double Distinction, A and B; and Anderson McCammont A*, Distinction and a B; Harriet Tooke Triple Distinction and Will Holloway a Double Distinction (Media), Distinction (Music Performance) and a D. This year 76% students gained 5 GCSEs at A*-C including English and Maths, the highest ever. At AS level, Helena Doré, Elin Falla, Jack Finbow, Daisy Hughes, Annabelle Perry, Aidan Saxon, Jacob Seldon, Elvina Smith, Alice Soul-West, Joe Tapper, Anna Valentine and Zoe Weeks all achieved the remarkable feat of gaining at least 4 grade As, with a further 16 students gaining at least 3 A grades. Just over a third of all grades were top two levels of A*/A. Nearly half the students achieved the Government’s challenging EBAC qualification of subjects including English, Maths, Science, Languages and Humanities. Just under a quarter of the year group, 44 students, gained at least 8 GCSEs at A* and A. Particularly praiseworthy were the English results where 92% students gained at least a Grade C. Residentials in this country, trips and visits, and activities on the College site all contributed to a most worthwhile week and I am very grateful to all the staff who gave freely of their time to make this possible. Following the sudden departure of the Principal at Dartmouth Academy over the summer, Mrs Graham has been seconded as Acting Principal. Mr Crocker has stepped up as Head of Sixth Form and Miss Barrett as his deputy. We are delighted to have been able to show the strength of Academies South West in responding to this PTFA NEWS We had a very successful year last year culminating in the wonderful Arts Evening and BBQ in July. Our first meeting of the year is on Tuesday, 22nd September, 7.15pm in the Staff Room. Please do come along if you are interested in getting involved. We completed our summer fund raising with a Ladies Funathlon Day. 35 ladies cycled, paddled and walked a circular route from Kingsbridge Community College to Bantham Quay where after an ice-cream they hopped on paddle boards and canoes and paddled up the Avon to Aveton Gifford. Following tea and cake, a walk culminated at the Crabshell for bubbly and pizzas! We had a brilliant time and raised £630 for PTFA funds after expenses and we were also able to donate £50 to Hope Cove RNLI. If you would like to know how much fun it is being part of our PTFA, watch this video: https:// www.youtube.com/watch?v=3sbxNrpaaIk St Nick’s Fair this year is to be held on Saturday, 5th December: put the date in your diaries now! ARTWRIGHT SCHOLARSHIP SUCCESS Congratulations to Ben Ireland who has won the prestigious Arkwright Scholarship for Technology. This is a fantastic achievement, well done, Ben! ALUMNI NEWS We have just heard that a former KCC student, Edward Stogdale, has just achieved a ‘First’ on the BA Hons Photography Course at the University of South Wales Cardiff. Even more remarkably he was the only student in his year to achieve this. -2- PARENTS HELPING STUDENTS READ College Term Dates 2015 –16 Thank you so much to the group of parents who have given up their time during the year to listen to students read. The parents come once a fortnight to meet with individual students during their reading lesson in the Library. They listen to students read and discuss the books with them. It has been a hugely successful scheme in encouraging young people to read more books.
