SCOPE PRESENTATION The charity Scope received a boost to its fundraising efforts this week, following our presentation in assembly of a cheque for £1831.89. This was an incredible amount which was raised by our children as part of the recent Lent Appeal. Children in Nursery and Kindy took part in a sponsored trike ride, Reception did an obstacle course challenge, Year 1 completed a pancake race whilst Year 2 opted for laps around the Pre-Prep garden. The Junior Prep department walked two miles in fancy dress to King Edward’s whilst the Middle Prep children in Years 5 and 6 created a piece of work for inclusion in the Barrow Hills Lent Booklet, which was sold in aid of Scope. Year 7 held a “Rounders in Onesies” match and Year 8 ran a car wash. The remainder of the total £2,549.64 raised through these activities was shared between Guide Dogs for the Blind; Stepping Stones, an independent special school in Hindhead and CAFOD. Julie Saunders, shop manager at Scope in Haslemere, said “We are absolutely thrilled to receive this donation and commitment, as well as creative thinking demonstrated by children at Barrow Hills has resulted in a truly impressive fundraising achievement. The money donated to Scope will be put to good use, helping those with a learning disability enjoy the same opportunities as everyone else.” Thank you to the Year 8 team who helped present the giant cheque: Eliot, Kit, Jennifer, Louis and Ollie and well done everyone! In last Friday’s newsletter it said that we can go to the orchard to pray to the statue there. I would like to take this opportunity to say that Catholics never pray to statues themselves because statues, which are made of wood, or stone, or marble are completely powerless - they are just statues. However, statues are important to Catholics because they help us to lift our minds to heaven and to heavenly things. When I see a statue of Mary, my mind turns to Mary and to how much she loved her Son and wants me to love him too; when I see a crucifix, my mind turns to Jesus and to how much I owe to him. When I see a statue of St Francis, my mind turns to him and to how he chose to live his life in obedience to God. The power to divert our mind to God is a statue's only value. NO NUTS PLEASE If you send snacks in to school for your child, could you please make sure they do not include nuts as we have some children with a severe nut allergy. Thank you. FROM THE CHAPLAINCY Jesus told his friends not to leave Jerusalem, but to wait there for what the Father had promised. “It is what I have often spoken to you about: John baptised you with water, but you, not many days from now, will be baptised with the Holy Spirit.” His friends asked him if the time had come to restore the kingdom of Israel, and Jesus said, “It is not for you to know times or dates. But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you, and you will be my witnesses not only in Jerusalem, but to the ends of the earth.” As he said this he was lifted up while his friends looked on, and a cloud took him from their sight. (Acts 1) We can well imagine the confusion of Jesus’ friends. He had been their leader and king who was nevertheless put to death, leaving them leaderless and confused. He rose from the dead three days later and spent 40 days with them, eating and drinking and doing all sorts of ordinary everyday things with them. They were glad to have him back to teach and to lead them. And then, with no real warning, he was leaving them again, only this time, for the last time – they were never to see him again whilst they lived. For the second time they were without a leader; they had no one to tell them what to do next and they felt confused and lost. However, they did what Jesus had told them to do: they waited together in Jerusalem for some event which Jesus had told them to expect. There were some very good reasons why Jesus had to leave the world: firstly, he quite simply wanted to go home. His life here on Earth was nothing if not difficult, really difficult. He had done his duty, he had run the race, he had seen his mission through to its very very bitter end. It was time to go home. Secondly, he wanted to go to heaven in order to prepare a place for us: “I am going to prepare a place for you so that where I am, you may be too.” What a wonderful thought, that Jesus has gone ahead of us to prepare a place for us. Who could be afraid of death with such a promise? Finally, it was necessary for him to leave the world in order for the outpouring of the Holy Spirit, an event which was not only going to turn the lives of his friends upside down, but which would send shock waves across the world for centuries to come, an event which would go on to touch the lives of us all. But more about that next week …. THE POPE SPEAKS This is the impact of what joy and hope together can have on our lives, when we are facing tribulations, when we have problems, when we are suffering. It is not an anaesthetic; pain is pain. But if lived through with joy and hope it will open the door for you to the joy of a new being. We have difficulties which are often awful, horrible difficulties, which can even make us doubt our faith. But with joy and hope we journey forward because after this tempest we become a new person. And Jesus tells us that this is a lasting joy and hope that will not go away. www.romereports.com Barrow Hills School — Newsletter for the week ending 13th May 2016— www.barrowhills.org.uk Page 5 SUMMER FOREST CAMP 23-27 JULY Summer Forest Camp with Mr Dean and friends at a beautiful site near Haslemere.
