Max always likes Harvest Festivals; mainly as there is plenty to eat. This year the garden produced a few apples, some blackberries, loads of greengages even a half ripe fig. Max said he would put the fig in a glass case in the hall and show it to visitors. Max is not really what you would call green fingered. Harvest Festival used to be celebrated at the beginning of the Harvest season on 1 August and was called Lammas, meaning 'loaf Mass'. Farmers made loaves of bread from the new wheat crop and gave them to their local church. In old Testament times there were three principal feasts which corresponded to the three harvest seasons; the feast of the Passover in April at the time of the barley harvest; the feast of Pentecost (7 weeks later) at the wheat harvest, and the feast of Tabernacles at the end of the year during the fruit harvest. Here are some verses about harvest time; "Now he who supplies seed to the sower and bread for food will also supply and increase your store of seed and will enlarge the harvest of your righteousness."2 Corinthians 9:10 "Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up."Galatians 6:9 "The LORD will indeed give what is good, and our land will yield its harvest."Psalm 85:12 A date for your Diary – Saturday November 29th Dinton Christmas Bazaar Dinton Village Hall 12.15 – 2.30pm More information in November’s Magazine! An evening of musical comedy featuring the songs of Flanders and Swann and a sprinkling of light verse from Sir John Betjeman Performed from the piano by Michael Lunts Thursday October 16th at 7.30pm Stone Methodist Chapel Laugh away those autumn blues with this celebration of the musical world of Flanders and Swann. Featuring a cornucopia of songs, familiar and less familiar, from ‘The Hippopotamus’ to ‘A Transport of Delight’, from ‘The Gnu’ to ‘Have Some Madeira, M’Dear’, Michael perfectly complements the off-beat world of ‘F &S’ with the humorous verse of that other arch-observer of the British character, Sir John Betjeman. Tickets £12.00 from Carole Fryer or David Pickup 01296 397794 [email protected] Parish News 8 October 2014 Did you know…. there really ARE angels in Aylesbury? Thousands of people work and visit our town centre every day. The Aylesbury Town Chaplaincy is an initiative by the local Christian community to help serve their needs. It is run by volunteers from across the town’s churches, all of whom are motivated by Christian principles of love and service. They are committed to serving people of all backgrounds and of all faiths or none. Volunteer chaplains are out and about in the town centre to be a friendly presence for shoppers and others visiting or working in the town. Through simple friendships chaplains are able to offer an independent, impartial and confidential ear for those who want personal support and can also be made available to those who want to discuss spiritual needs or receive prayer. Street Angels provide voluntary Christian support, reflecting the love of God during the night-time, and help to make the town centre safe and enjoyable for everyone. Since November 2012 a team has been out each weekend (either on a Friday or Saturday night), between 10.30pm and 3 or 4am. They work in partnership with the police, door staff, taxis and other agencies and engage with the public by offering both a listening ear and practical assistance; acting as a calming community presence - especially around local pubs, clubs and restaurants. Typically, Street Angels will listen to those who want to talk and offer support to those who are distressed or upset as a result of homelessness, intoxication, drug abuse and/or other issues, referring people onto other relevant agencies when applicable. They can offer help to those who are isolated or separated from friends. On a practical level they give out space blankets on cold nights or flat shoes, or wait with someone for a taxi or a lift. They are easily identifiable by their branded jackets bearing the Street Angels logo and their fluorescent ID armband. SUNDAY 19th OCTOBER at 10.00am There will be a short film and presentation about the work of the Town Chaplains and Street Angels during the Family Service at St John Baptist Church, Stone. Come and hear more about the love of Christ in action. Everyone is welcome. Parish News 10 October 2014 The Vicarage, 10 Badgers Rise, Stone HP17 8RR. Tel: 01296 748068 email: [email protected] Dear Friends, October 2014 I recently had to arrange an emergency appointment with my dentist, after suffering from severe toothache during the night. The appointment was made for just one hour after my phone call. Afterwards, I thought how fortunate we are in England to be able to call upon such expertise to meet our needs. Later that same day, I learnt that in parts of Syria today there is just one doctor per 100,000 people, and I’m sure similar figures can be replicated elsewhere in many parts of the world. Are we really grateful for such facilities, I wonder? When the Israelites had been freed from Egypt and were preparing to enter the Promised Land, God gave them a warning, with these words: “When you have eaten and are satisfied, praise the Lord your God for the good land He has given you. Be careful that you do not forget the Lord your God, failing to observe his commands, his laws and his decrees that I am giving you this day.” (Deuteronomy 8:10-11) This year looks like being a bumper harvest for cereals, potatoes, fruit etc. We have recently enjoyed some very tasty corn-on-the-cob from our garden. Do we remember to thank God for his provisions and goodness to us in so many ways? Harvest Festival time is always a particularly good opportunity to do this, so do th join us for our main Harvest Service Celebration at 10.00am on Sunday 5 October. Bring some produce along or fresh fruit and vegetables for the McIntyre Homes, and tins and packets will be given to the Vineyards Needy Project in Aylesbury, as last year. It is so easy to think that it’s only through our own efforts that we have so much to enjoy in life, for this has always been a human failing as our Bible Reading states in verse 17: ‘You may say to yourself, “my power and the strength of my hands have produced this wealth for me.” But remember the Lord your God, for it is He who gives you the ability to produce wealth.’ If we had been born in Africa or India, we might see things rather differently! Wherever we live, we are encouraged to keep God’s Commandments, so I hope you will continue to join us for our Autumn Sermon series on these, together with the Monday Evening Home Group at the Vicarage. It is not too late to come along. As we’ve already been reminded in this series, the greatest Commandment is to love God, and then to love our neighbours, and as Jesus said: ‘Those to whom much is given, much will be required.’ (Luke 12:48) A happy Harvest to you all, Yours in His service, Priest in Charge Parish News 11 October 2014 Because of the fate of the fete! there will be a JUMBLE SALE on Saturday 25th October from 10.30 to 1 p.m in Dinton Village Hall All proceeds towards a new Gazebo for the Band (The weather destroyed this year’s one!) DIAMOND WEDDING We also congratulate Jim and Mary Purdy from Bishopstone who celebrated their 60th Wedding Anniversary on 25th September. Parish News 12 October 2014 October Gardening Depending on weather condition, this month will be time to lift and store dahlias, chrysanthemums and gladioli. Lift the gladioli corms cut off most of the stem and allow to dry. When dry store in shallow trays. Chrysanthemums need to be stored in soil or compost and keep out of frost. Dahlias are much more difficult as they need to be lifted and the stems cut off the tubers stored upside down to dry out then stored in boxes, in a frost free place. It is important to check occasionally to see they are not going mouldy. Now is the time to collect plant material for winter decoration before it rots or softens, especially fruits and seed pods for Christmas. Spring flowering plants such as wallflowers should be planted now. If herbaceous plants have out grown their space they can be lifted and divided and then replanted. It is best to use the growth from the outside and throw away the older middle. Remove fallen leaves from plants and rockeries. Cuttings of gooseberries and currants can be taken now. Take cuttings from this year’s growth. The cuttings should be 8 to 10 inches long. Cut just below a bud, push the shoots about 4 or 5 inches into the ground, somewhere with a bit of shade, and where they can be left for a couple of years undisturbed, by which time you should have some good young bushes. Contact David at: [email protected] Parish News 16 October 2014 DINTON PARISH FETE It wasn't so much singing in the rain on Monday as soaking in the rain! The three or four hundred people who did brave the elements seemed to enjoy themselves. We had the forethought to move equipment and set up the gazebos in the dry on Sunday. The Bletchington Silver band played excellently despite being dripped on. The Dinton based choir SING entertained in the tea tent and encouraged tea drinkers to join in. The two marquees provided much needed shelter. Even though there weren't so many children present, Kathy Ghouse encouraged a good number to take part in the obstacle races. Unfortunately the wet grass was too dangerous to run the wheelbarrow races and tug of war. The two village teams will have another year to train for next year's battle. The Dakota fly past didn't make it due to bad visibility, but as the remaining Battle of Britain aircraft are so valuable it is quite understandable. Because of the weather, the takings will be well down this year but everyone did their very best to minimise wastage and loss. On behalf of the Fete Committee may I say a "massive Thank You" to all the lovely people who helped the setting up on Sunday and even more the folk who cleared as much equipment as possible when we closed. They had to endure pouring rain and very soggy equipment. We will be holding our Fete Celebration evening on Tuesday 21st October in Dinton Village hall at 8 p.m. Come and join us for a drink and find out how much (or little) of a celebration it is this year! Finally "thank you" to the Committee for their loyalty and commitment for so many months of the year. Parish News 19 October 2014 Pickled Onions Recipe Small pickling onions or shallots Salt, cooking All as required of: Castor sugar Salt Cloves Dried Chillies Pickling spice Malt vinegar, best quality, cold. 1 kg 200 gm Method Peel the onions. Place in a large ceramic bowl, NOT metal. Add the 200 gm salt and water to cover. Cover the bowl with a tea towel. Leave to stand overnight. Strain the brine from the onions and rinse them in cold water. Leave them in the colander to drain well. Prepare sufficient jars. Close pack the onions in the jars. To each jar add 1 tsp of sugar A generous pinch of salt 2 or 3 cloves 2 dried chillies A bare mustard spoon of pickling spice. Fill the jars with malt vinegar. Do NOT be tempted to use hot vinegar, it makes the onions soggy. Cover closely with plastic screw-top lids. Store in a cool dark place for 2-3 months. If you do them now, they will be ready for Christmas. Note. A little while ago, unbeknownst, I knocked over a started jar of onions. By the time I discovered them, they were fully drained of vinegar. The onions were very crunchy and proved to keep well. Parish News 20 October 2014 NEWS FROM CHAPEL HILL Methodist Chapel, Eythrope Road, Stone, HP17 8PH Our Minister is REVD.
