In The Afterlife of Plays, Jonathan Miller argues that classical
texts survive only through adaptation. Does this apply to Don
Quixote? This workshop will approach Cervantes’s masterpiece
from two different angles: 1) as a novel that, in its original
form, still offers contemporary readers a textured view of such
complex issues as the creation of self and identity, gender
roles, social class, and religious freedom; and 2) as a source of
inspiration that lives in the multiple versions and adaptations it
generated in Latin America and the world throughout the centuries.
“Channeling Cervantes in 2017”
2
Dr. Linda Gould-Levine, Professor Emerita, Spanish & Italian
This presentation invokes Miguel de Cervantes and his Don Quixote (1605, 1615) as models of tolerance and freedom—not without contradictions and ambiguity—particularly relevant in the troubled times we are living today. There are surprising parallels between 17th
century Spain and 21st century America that will be explored in the context of Cervantes’s
life and masterpiece.

In both Gabriel García Márquez and Mario Vargas Llosa myth, legend and history mingle to
blur the line that separates the real from the imaginary. Gabriel García Márquez has been
called the Cervantes of the 20th century. Mario Vargas Llosa has clearly revealed in some
of his works the presence of the legendary and the fantastic of the Middle Ages in Latin
America.
“Don Quixote from Page to Stage”
Matthew S. Tanico, Yale University & MSU Scholar-in-Residence, Quixote
The Peak Performances production of Amy Beth Kirsten and Mark DeChiaza’s Quixote adapts Cervantes’s classic novel for the 21st century stage. Following a discussion of
the process that went into that particular adaptation, we will consider stage adaptations of
the novel more generally and the philosophical implications in altering a work of literature
for the theater. Finally, we will discuss the role of adaptations in the classroom as a way of
promoting language learning and culture.

lengua y cultura.
