From a ginormous tomistoma, to a one hundred and twelve pound alligator snapping turtle, to seven Japanese giant salamanders. Even our six-foot Komodo dragon, Jude, made a few TV appearances throughout the year. Cold-Blooded Giants drew the curiosity of thousands of guests. With our many Cold-Blooded Giants, and more than 5,000 other animals from over 700 species, it’s no wonder the San Antonio Zoo continues to be a world class Zoo, and a top tourist destination in San Antonio. Even though the Cold-Blooded Giants campaign is a wrap, that doesn’t mean the giants are gone. They’re still here; waiting for you to come visit and learn! But, don’t take my word for it; it’s a “must-come-see-foryourself” kind of deal! 2013 is sure to be adventurous, especially with your 2013 Passport to Adventure! More details to come! Oh, and, did I mention the Zoo’s firstever jammin’ jingle?! Listen for it on the radio; you’ll want to dance to it – I did! (want to that is!) As we look to the future and embark upon one of the Zoo’s biggest endeavors, our millennium celebration, your continued support is needed more than ever. In 2014, YOUR San Antonio Zoo turns 100 years old. The opening of Zootennial Plaza will feature a custom-designed carousel, an upscale restaurant, and a gathering plaza for guests. Fundraising for this momentous event has already begun; be a part of Zoo history by donating now. Visit www.sazoo.org/zootennial for more information and for donation opportunities. As the Zoo continues to grow and improve, we are thankful to our generous donors, dedicated members, and valued guests! It is because of your generosity and support that we are able to give our animals the exemplary care they deserve, do more for the conservation of wildlife, and share our passion for species preservation. Thank you for 2012, see you in 2013, and be thinking of 2014! Sincerely, The San Antonio Zoological Society is guided by a simple, yet powerful mission statement: To foster appreciation and concern for all living things. The Zoo is dedicated to providing: n The highest standard of care for our animal and plant collection; n A diverse educational experience for all people; and n All resources at our disposal for the conservation of the Earth’s flora and fuana. The Zoo’s mission statement is a thoughtful reflection on its many accomplishments and guides and inspires the Zoo as it rises to its next level of acheivement. Stephen McCusker Executive Director San Antonio Zoological Society www.facebook.com/sazooaq/ www.twitter.com/realwildzoo/ www.youtube.com/MySazoo/ 3 Reptile House F or years, the San Antonio Zoo’s popular Reptile House has provided an up-close look at some of the world’s most exotic and venomous reptiles! In 2012, the Zoo’s graphics department created vibrant, new informational graphics and intriguing, one-of-a-kind artwork to highlight the amazing creatures found within the Reptile House. Each easy to read graphic offers creative images and interesting reptile facts. They are sure to be a guest favorite for years to come! The exterior of the Reptile House was brightened with artwork created by our very own graphics department! Beautiful enough to be in an art gallery, each colorfully detailed piece represents the amazing features of our reptiles while creating a beautiful backdrop for fun Zoo photos! 4 B uilt on a former limestone quarry, the San Antonio Zoo has the solid foundation to last a lifetime! However, to keep up with current trends and technologies, changes are always needed to keep the Zoo up-to-date. This year, some exciting changes to exhibits, events and digital efforts were made. Even through its many changes, the Zoo’s mission of conservation, education and recreation stands firm. Digital changes C hanges at the Zoo aren’t only for our exhibits! A major overhaul of the Zoo’s digital presence took place in June, as we launched a brand new website! This beautiful new website features easy to navigate buttons and links to help guests find exactly what they are looking for. All content for the new website is created and uploaded at the Zoo, which allows for up-to-the-minute news, information and interaction! Together with an active social media presence, the Zoo is staying on top of current internet trends and is able to reach guests on a more personal, albeit digital, level. Gift shop & annual membership party S ome changes were made to our gift shops in 2012 as well. The Butterfly and Aquarium gift shop stayed opened year-round, and merchandise was expanded to include jewelry and women’s apparel. This added merchandise has proven to be a good move! This year, the Zoo’s annual membership party was changed quite a bit, literally from a daytime event to a nighttime event. Members delighted in a family movie night in possibly the most unique setting for an outdoor movie in San Antonio; among the roars and snores of YOUR San Antonio Zoo! Members feasted on popcorn and refreshing drinks, while enjoying a big screen movie under the stars in what will be the future area for Zootennial Plaza! We are always on the prowl for bigger and better ways to celebrate you, our members, so do share your thoughts and ideas for future membership parties. As we continue to inch our way towards our centennial, we hope you and your family will continue to support and grow with us. 5 E very year brings changes, improvements and new developments to the San Antonio Zoo, and 2012 was no exception! With our ever-growing animal collection, the increasing number of loyal members and wonderful guests from all over the world, the Zoo continues to strive to find new ways of enhancing and creating lasting memories. Sumatran tigers I n February, our resident male Sumatran tiger, Berani, was sent to the Akron Zoo in Ohio. With his departure, the San Antonio Zoo was able to acquire a female Sumatran tiger, also from the Akron Zoo, and a male tiger from the Oklahoma City Zoo! Prior to this transition, major changes occurred as Zoo staff worked diligently giving the tiger exhibit an extreme makeover. In little over a week, 9,000 square feet of outdated exhibit was removed and replaced with lush grasses, shrubs, bamboo and palms. The end result, an oasis of foliage and greenery for two new Sumatran tigers to get better acquainted. And for good reason; these two have been approved for breeding by the Association for Zoos and Aquariums Species Survival Program, so we hope to have even more exciting news to report in 2013! Kemala 6 Raguno Bear exhibit The tiger exhibit wasn’t the only exhibit that received a facelift this year. Originally built in 1929, the Zoo’s bear exhibits were considered state-of-the-art, but throughout the years they became limited in meeting today’s needs for these species. Once again, our dedicated and talented Zoo staff constructed large climbing structures for both spectacled bears, and for one of the Zoo’s most personable bears; the sun bear! Sun bears are actually the world’s smallest species of bear. While not giant in size, “Baubles,” has a BIG personality! His bear-size jungle gym keeps him busy climbing as high as 14 feet! Together with his personality and agile climbing skills, “Baubles” has become a staff and guest favorite! ‘Donkey Barn’ The Zoo’s footprint will be changing soon, with the acquisition of a parcel of land that was previously the home of San Antonio Parks & Recreation department. The building known as the “donkey barn” was built in 1920 and was used as a barn for donkeys that provided rides. Within the next few years, the main facility will be converted and the warehouse space will be headquarters for the Visitor Services department. The initial renovation phase took place this year and involved abatement of hazardous materials, demolition of outbuildings, and beautification plans. Zoo staff is looking forward to the much needed space! Despite the Zoo’s many transformations, our commitment to conservation, education and recreation will never change, and we will continue to work towards making the Zoo a family-fun and educational destination for our one million plus guests and members. 7 E ach year, over a million guests pass through the gates of the San Antonio Zoo. Accommodating our valued guests, along with caring for over 8,500 animals requires massive support! Thanks to our dedicated and diligent employees, volunteers, docents, and donors, our loyal members and guests are able to enjoy the Zoo 365 days a year. Volunteers & Docents 8 As they do everyday of every year, a combination of 450 volunteers, 195 docents, 174 teens, and 81 interns generously gifted their time assisting employees and educating guests. Between interactive exhibits, volunteer interactions, and exhibit interpretations, 687,035 guests enjoyed and learned from interactive experiences throughout the Zoo. This enthusiastic group donated 32,051 service hours in 2012! 2012 Highlights 1,059,653 total guests Guests & staff I n 2012, 1,059,653 guests were cheerfully welcomed into the Zoo by the Guest Relations Department, while the Visitor Services Department provided yummy treats and delicious meals for the hungriest of appetites. Assuring our vast animal collection is kept healthy and strong, our Zookeepers work around-the-clock providing what they do best…Amazing Animal Care! Donors & Members I n 2012 the Zoo received $3,236,947 from 11,665 generous donors. These donors give to our annual fund, animal adoptions, grants, capital campaigns or purchase a ticket to one of five signature special events. Being a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, the San Antonio Zoo must raise money to off-set its $18 million operating budget and its capital campaigns to keep the Zoo growing. The support received from donors is vital for the continued success of the Zoo. 21,118 households owned a San Antonio Zoo membership in 2012. These loyal members accounted for 25% of guests to the Zoo, with membership renewals accounting for 52%, and new members accounting for 48%. Not only does the San Antonio Zoo receive massive support from its amazing employees and volunteers, without you, our dedicated members, we wouldn’t and couldn’t exist! Thank you! Whether support for the Zoo comes from donors, employees, members, guests or volunteers, all roles are vital in order for the San Antonio Zoo to remain a first class Zoo. As we move towards our 2014 Centennial Celebration, we look forward to the wonderful Zoo memories yet to be created by all our massive supporters. 687,035 guests participated in interactive experiences 450 Zoo volunteers 21,118 households owned a Zoo membership $3,236,947 received from 11,665 generous donors 9 C harged with inspiring, educating and motivating guests to act on behalf of wildlife and wild places, the Education Department was part of the many BIG and GIANT happenings throughout the Zoo in 2012. From Stroller Safaris to Overnight Campouts, more than 10,000 people participated in formal education programs that spanned all ages, hours of the day, and topics. In addition to programs, educators focused on enhancing the guest experience with additional keeper and education connections. Between interactive exhibits, volunteer interactions, and exhibit interpretations, 687,035 guests enjoyed and learned from interactive experiences in the Zoo! In addition, 2012 program participants enjoyed 44,618 hours of fun in different conservation education programs! T hirteen fun-filled themed days provided guests the opportunity to celebrate everything from Elephant Appreciation Day to International Mud Day. During the holiday season, Santa was on hand every weekend to take photos with guests, as he and his helpful elves provided fun tips for a “greener” holiday season! With exciting and educational activities, these special themed days heightened the guests’ experience at the Zoo. More than 2,400 guests graciously participated in the Zoo’s “Evaluation Station” providing useful feedback on how the Zoo can continue to improve. These stations are just one more way the Zoo’s Education department is dedicated to making the San Antonio Zoo the best Zoo for YOU! 10 10 T he summer of 2012 was filled with huge successes! Summer camp hosted more than 683 campers who enjoyed 14,265 hours of conservation, education and FUN! Teen volunteers, college interns, and summer volunteers spent an astounding 11,722 hours entertaining and educating guests, caring for animals and much, much more! Fifteen new keeper and education connections were added to inspire, educate and entertain Zoo guests. The 29th Annual Zoobilation Ball: Come Fly with Me C haired by Bonny and Mike Osterhage, ZooBall raised $278,500. Guests enjoyed a moonlight setting while dancing to the rhythm of live jazz. The theme for this elegant evening focused on raising funds for the endangered Micronesian Kingfisher. We depend on underwriters to make this event a success; our heartfelt thanks goes to South Texas Money Management, as the major underwriter. T his year, guests enjoyed over-the-top events held in the coolest location, YOUR San Antonio Zoo! From the ever popular Zoo Boo to the elegant Zoobilation Ball, events are a huge asset to the fundraising goals of the Zoo and a fun way to enjoy the Zoo in a different light. Zoo-la-la, Feast with the Beasts 2012 Zoo Run Relay & Kids’ Run 2012 Zoo Boo 2011 O ctober 30 and the 31, 2011 was a great time for 9,598 Zoo Boo-ers! This event generated over $48,000 for the Zoo! Guests were delighted, as they enjoyed the Zoo during the evening, listened to live music by The After Hours Band, The Nathan Mathis Band, and The Sky Divided. Visits to beer booths, sponsored by Silver Eagle Distributors were aplenty. Pepsi drink stations were readily available, as were incredible dance performances, and interactions with Zoo Keepers and animals. 11 zootennial Plaza O ver the past 99 years the San Antonio Zoo has taken GIANT strides to secure state of the art animal care, updated enclosures, maximizing guest attendance, and education awareness. The economical impact the San Antonio Zoo has on the community is immeasurable and has made San Antonio “San Antonio.” In 2014, the Zoo will continue its GIANT strides with the commemoration of its first 100 years and the opening of Zootennial Plaza. The San Antonio Zoo differs greatly from the Zoo of a century ago. The evolution of the Zoo has well surpassed and often led the changing focus of zoos across the country. From its humble beginnings in 1914 as a public viewing area of elk, buffalo, deer, monkeys, lions and bears, the San Antonio Zoo has become one of the leading zoos in the country, with 56 acres and home to more than 8,500 animals. Welcoming more than a million guests each year, it is imperative that the Zoo take this GIANT stride, which can only improve its guest amenities. The Zoological Society is focused on revenue generating opportunities to improve the guest experience, to build new exhibits, and to increase wildlife conservation efforts. New revenue sources are needed to help fund future projects such as Africa Live! Phase 3, which will include elephant, rhino, giraffe and zebra exhibits. We are confident that Zootennial Plaza will honor our past and offer a unique respite awaiting new memories. Zootennial Plaza will be an $8 million venue, consisting of an upscale restaurant, a centralized gathering area, and a custom-designed carousel with gleaming brass, and stunning, hand-painted animals. 12 restaurant Carousel The carousel will not only celebrate all that is the San Antonio Zoo, it will offer the community a once in a lifetime opportunity to personally name one or more of the enchanting creatures that will grace the carousel for years to come! Zootennial Plaza construction has already started, and will continue until the grand opening in March 2014. You can contribute to Zootennial fundraising efforts, with one of the many naming opportunities. For more information about Zootennial Plaza, please visit www.sazoo.org/zootennial, or call Dawn Koehler 210-734-7184 ext. 1040. Zootennial Plaza will have a giant impact on the Zoo’s future and will make its mark in San Antonio Zoo history!
