Summer Reading: Read S'more
Books!
We recently took our reading "flex" groups
on a field trip to the Rochester Public Library to
learn more about all they have to offer for summer
reading activities. Most students who attended got to
leave with their own library cards! Mrs. Kelly, the
children's librarian, gave us a tour of the different
sections throughout the library, and will be returning to
William Allen on June 15th to promote their summer
reading program as well. We are lucky to be located so
close to the library, so hopefully you will make it a part
of your family's summer activities!
This summer's reading challenge will have a
camping theme because we want all students to be
reading "s'more" books during vacation! Our Summer
Reading Kick-Off will be held during our morning
meeting on June 20th, where we will reveal the
awesome camping-themed prizes to raffle off to
students who participate in summer reading. We will
also be acknowledging the Rotary Club, for generously
donating books to all of our first and second graders to
have for summer reading!
Mark your calendars for our Fall Family Literacy
Night on October 24th, which will also have a fun
camping theme! Please encourage your child to make
reading a part of their summer vacation!

Principal’s Corner
Dear Families,
Unbelievable! This is our last newsletter of the year and there is so much to reflect on. However, before
doing that, I want to wish all of our grade 5 students and families well as they prepare to move onto
Rochester Middle School. You will all do well! For our students and families in K-4, I look forward to
welcoming you back next year and seeing some of you this summer.
Your kids have been hard at work with NWEA testing (grades 2-5) and are currently completing DIBELS
(reading) in all grades. Educators in all grade levels will be meeting in the next couple of weeks to analyze
student progress.
Even though we are approaching our last day of school we still have many days to enjoy together. We look
forward to our Field Day on Tuesday, June 6th and the City-Wide Track Meet on the 12th. Our Honors
Breakfast on June 15th and we will have our traditional Awards Assembly on the last day of school at 9am.
Thanks to those of you who sent back feedback forms regarding your child’s learning style and strengths.
This year, we are trying something new and will be announcing student placements for fall on the last day
of school. Students will have an opportunity to visit their class and teacher during a “step-up” period in the
morning. Your child will receive a letter from your child’s teacher at that time, along with a supply list. (If
you are living outside of the WAS district, you will be reassigned to another school.)
As always, I like to take some time to list some of the awesome things that have been happening at William
Allen School throughout the year! I can’t possibly list them all, but here are some that come to mind!
 The great STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) activities happening throughout the
building (school-wide)
 Engaging Literacy activities, including Literacy Night, Read-Across America, and Summer
Reading Challenge (school-wide)
 Spelling and Geography Bees, encouraging kids to persevere (school-wide)
 Musicians, dancing, movement, voices, rhythm, and concerts (school-wide!)
 Frisbee Hospital Art Gallery, bringing smiles to patients and staff (25 participants)
 Enrichment afternoons, establishing positive relationships (60 participants)
 Developing writers in classrooms (school-wide!)
I look forward to the last weeks of school and the anticipation of the fall. We are already putting things on
the calendar for next year!
Lynn Allen, Principal
The WAS staff extends our sincerest
gratitude to the PTA, families and
students for their generosity and
thoughtfulness during Staff
Appreciation Week!!! We are so
lucky to have such wonderful
families in our school community!
Good News from Ms. Allen…
For the third year, we were able to
negotiate an agreement with Geskus
Photography to provide every child in
attendance at William Allen School with a
FREE yearbook! It is our hope; that we can
continue to offer this in future years. I
would like to thank Mrs. Crowe for her
continued efforts in coordinating the layout
of our yearbook again this year!
We educate today’s child for tomorrow’s world.
