From the Editor - Heather Decterow, Editor, The Valley Breeze The Holiday Season is Here! I’ve always enjoyed the Christmas season. For me, it begins in mid-November with the chilly weather and crunching snow as I walk along marvelling at the hoar frost. I love all the holiday gatherings, the joyful music, lights and decorations. Christmas is a time to remember Christmases past. I reminisce about times when I was a child. I have several Christmas cards that chronicle our growth. My parents sent out this Christmas card in 1955 when it only cost two cents to mail. Re-publicaon of the Valley Breeze Newsleer (in whole or part) requires the express wrien permission of the arcle’s author and the publisher. Please direct re-publicaon requests to [email protected]. VALLEY VR RIDGE Valley Ridge Community Association Next Board meeng will be held on January 28, 2015 at The Lodge at Valley Ridge starng at 7 pm VRCA Planning Committee Please call David McCarrel for the next meeng date, me and place: [email protected] Residents are welcome to attend either of these meetings. Valley Ridge now on Facebook! Check it out at www.facebook.com/valleyridgecalgary Get up to date community info whenever you need it. Of course with Christmas comes emphasis on giving. I donate locally to the Salvation Army Kettle and other charities for hampers or gifts, and I also contribute globally through kiva.org or Ten Thousand Villages. Take a few moments to think about your favourite Christmas memories. How many of these do you recall: • Japanese oranges wrapped in green tissue paper in wooden boxes. • Anticipating a snowfall to make snow angels, play ‘fox and geese’ or make a snow fort. continued on next page THE VALLEY BREEZE: OFFICIAL VOICE OF THE VALLEY RIDGE COMMUNITY ASSOCIATION DECEMBER 2014 3 In Our Community From the Editor connued • Joining others for sleigh rides, tobogganing and skating. • Christmas music shared by caroling or enjoying concerts at church. • Clearing the ice on an outdoor rink to play crack the whip, broom ball or hockey. • Cutting down the Christmas tree. • Enjoying heat from the warm coal and wood stove. • Ice fishing. • Rural school Christmas concerts. • Roasting your first Christmas turkey and stuffing, cooking large mounds of mashed potatoes and baking special treats like shortbread cookies. • Frost shields on the side windows of cars. • Stringing popcorn. • Anticipating the contents of your Christmas stocking. Even if your Christmas is quieter than the large family celebrations of years’ past, new traditions can make the season special. How about enjoying a card game with a neighbour or watching a movie like It’s a Wonderful Life? Our skate shed suffered vandalism on Halloween night. The locks to the skate change room and equipment room were damaged with a crow bar. Nothing was taken, but the damage to the doors was substantial. We ask our residents to keep an eye out for any vandalism they might see. You can report vandalism that has already occurred to 3-1-1. If it is in progress, you can phone the nonemergency police line at 403-266-1234. I would like to extend my thanks to the Rink Committee, Tony Thompson, and Roger Horvath for their prompt actions in reporting and fixing this vandalism. More thanks go out to three volunteers who installed the solar lights at the Valley Ridge Community entrance sign. We wish to thank Mike Beamish, Ian Emmerson, and Doug MacDonald. I am always inspired by the willingness of Valley Ridge residents to volunteer their time, whether within the community, for their children’s sports or schools, or for a worthy cause like urban farming, food collection or emergencies such as our flood. These constant examples fill me with happiness and contentment. I am thrilled to live in such a wonderful community. Happy Holidays to everyone! Community Challenge - Christa McKegney, VRCA President Merry Christmas! President’s Update - Christa McKegney, VRCA President I am pleased to welcome Ellie Cox to the Board of Directors. Ellie has agreed to be appointed to the position of Director of Community Events. Many thanks go out to her for stepping in to this important role. If there are any other interested persons, Ellie is looking for individuals to help her with specific events in 2015. Please send your name to: [email protected] I t’s December! A month for celebrating with your family and friends, and enjoying the Holiday Season. This month’s challenge is to invite your neighbours over for dinner, games, a coffee, a party or whatever strikes your fancy. Don’t forget that you can send your stories to Heather, our editor, along with your photos! THE VALLEY BREEZE: OFFICIAL VOICE OF THE VALLEY RIDGE COMMUNITY ASSOCIATION DECEMBER 2014 5 In Our Community Christmas Lights and Display Contest A reminder to all about the Annual Christmas Lights and Display Contest, to be held the week of December 22. The top winner will receive a $100 Van Gogh’s gift certificate. The second place winner will receive a $50 Van Gogh’s gift certificate. Rink Volunteers Needed! Winter has arrived, and it’s once again time to skate! Skating is great exercise and lots of fun, and our rink is one of the best in the City. However, the Valley Ridge rink is maintained only through volunteers. We do not have paid staff to flood the rink or drive the ice resurfacer. It is crucial that the Rink Committee has enough volunteers to maintain our facility. If you use the rink, please consider donating a few hours of your time. Please send your information to [email protected] if you are interested. Hallowe’en Pumpkin Carving Contest! - Ellie Cox Hello to my community. My name is Ellie Cox and I am your newest community board member, acting as the Events Coordinator. My husband, Tom, and I have lived in Valley Ridge for five years. From the first day we drove into Valley Ridge we have loved it, and it just keeps getting better. I am from small town Saskatchewan (yes, you will find a Rider jersey or two in my house), where I was always active in the community. I am excited to finally get involved where I live now and look forward to serving in my new role, meeting new people and making new friends. I hope you all had a fun and safe Hallowe’en. The results of the pumpkin carving contest are in. The creative, winning pumpkins were found at 6 Valley Woods Landing. I would also like to mention the display at 50 Valley Meadow Garden. This family planted, harvested and carved their home grown gems. Valley Ridge Casino! Valley Ridge has received our next Casino dates. Please mark your calendars for Monday, April 13 and Tuesday, April 14. We need volunteers for the day and night shifts on both days. Enjoy your Christmas season, everyone! The Casino is vitally important fundraising, which allows our community to build facilities and support our sports programs. The Casinos have helped Valley Ridge with fundraising for the new playgrounds and the ice rink. We have more upgrades planned for our community! And we need your help. If you are interested in offering your time, please email Christa at [email protected] THE VALLEY BREEZE: OFFICIAL VOICE OF THE VALLEY RIDGE COMMUNITY ASSOCIATION DECEMBER 2014 7 In Our Community Board Maers: Highlights of the October 22, 2014 Board Meeng Grow Calgary Christa reported that she had been in discussions with Valley Ridge residents and the manager of the Grow Calgary site situated on the south side of the highway near the ramp to enter Stony Trail. Local residents were concerned about the unsightly state of the grounds around the garden site. The Board agreed with her that better communication needed to be maintained with the group as well as asking our MLA Alana Delong and our councillor Ward Sutherland to be aware of our concerns and to assist with inspections. The Board supports the idea of growing food for the food bank and other needy organizations but feels the concerns around the maintenance of the grounds need to be addressed for safety and aesthetic reasons. interchange will occur as part of the West Calgary Ring Road. The VRCA’s second amendment that involved the inclusion of a specific traffic volume capacity threshold number within the ASP for the new VR-TCH interchange, was unfortunately not accepted. However, we did get assurances from Councillor Sutherland that in conjunction with each future Tentative Plan or Development permit, further transportation analysis is required to confirm the proposed land use intensities can be supported by transportation infrastructure in place at that time. More details can be found within a recent Valley Breeze article by the VRCA PC and on their interim website: https://sites.google.com/site/ vrcapc2014/home. Community Events Outdoor Fitness Park Dave brought new information and equipment suggestions for the outdoor fitness park. The Board is considering those that would enhance the community’s recreation opportunities. This is seen as a way to offer more activities for all age groups. A possible site has been suggested. Dave plans to attend upcoming information sessions. Planning and Development Update At their October 6, 2014 Public Hearing, the City of Calgary Council approved the Revised Calgary West Area Structure Plan (ASP) and Shape Properties development proposal situated on the south side of the TCH. Based on presentations made by members of the VRCA’s Planning Committee to Council on October 6, one of two, recommended amendments was added to the bylaws passed by Council to allow this development. The amendment that was accepted will ensure no premature stripping and grading operations will commence until the Province (Alberta Transportation) has formally confirmed that construction and timing for the new VR-TCH A resident of the community has come forward and offered to become the new Community Events Director. The Board moved in favour of accepting the offer and welcome Ellie Cox to this position. LEAF Update It was noted that the new solar light has been installed to illuminate the community sign at the entrance to Valley Ridge. This completes the project. Thanks to Mike Beamish for seeing this project through to completion. Facility Update November marks the beginning of a new season at the skating rink. Roger reported that the Olympia ice resurfacer will be serviced and ready. Also he will work to line up volunteers to help flood the rinks. Next Meeng Wednesday, January 28, 2015, at 7 pm. All residents are welcome to attend at The Lodge in Valley Ridge. Season’s Greetings, from the staff and students of École St. Sylvester. Christmas is one of the most exhilarating times of the year and it’s definitely bustling with excitement here. We will be launching a Candy Cane Gram as well as Ugly Sweater Day, where students will get to show off their Christmas spirit with an ugly sweater that has Christmas designs on it! If you are having trouble getting into the spirit of the season, be sure to come to our school Carol on December 11 at 7 pm. Students and staff will celebrate the spirit of Christmas by supporting the DeVry Poinsettia Fundraiser. The proceeds will support social and community activities for the school. As well, we will be collecting items that will be donated to families in need. On December 12 we will also be giving a presentation on Mission Mexico. As part of our Catholic Community of Caring initiative, Mission to Mexico is an outreach program of Catholics in the Diocese of Calgary to marginalized communities in the State of Guerrero. Important dates: • Advent Celebration: December 1, 9:30 am • Ugly Sweater Day: December 15 • Early Dismissal: December 19 We wish you a very happy and safe Christmas! THE VALLEY BREEZE: OFFICIAL VOICE OF THE VALLEY RIDGE COMMUNITY ASSOCIATION DECEMBER 2014 11 THE VALLEY BREEZE: OFFICIAL VOICE OF THE VALLEY RIDGE COMMUNITY ASSOCIATION DECEMBER 2014 13 In Our City Grow Calgary the generosity of local residents and businesses who believe in this cause. Amanda Weightman, growcalgary.ca At Grow Calgary we farm fresh, organic produce for the Calgary Food Bank. We think everyone is entitled to a healthy diet and view urban farming as a feasible, immediate response to food access and food security. Therefore, we focus on providing fresh, pesticide-free, vitamin-dense produce to those for whom it may not be accessible, affordable, or available. Grow Calgary was founded in May 2013 and is Canada’s largest not-for-profit urban agricultural farm. We make use of an unused eleven-acre plot of land on the Transportation Utility Corridor, just West of Canada Olympic Park—opposite to the Valley Ridge community. All operations to date are volunteer run. Many Calgarians rely on support from the Food Bank to feed themselves and their families. In 2013, the service was accessed by 129,948 Calgarians—42% of them children. This year, Grow Calgary provided as many as 1,500 pounds of produce to the Food Bank in a single day, and were able to improve the nutritional content of 12,000 food hampers over Thanks to the support the season. We had of over 1,000 volunteers a 170 day growing from the community. season and 100 days of harvest. This is in thanks to the support of over 1,000 volunteers from the community. In addition to our ever-expanding vegetable patch, this year we have added a pollination program and bee farm, a seed farm, seed bank (next year we will plant our own seed!), a water-capture and irrigation system, a composting project, greenhouses, educational seminars, internships, and corporate and student excursions. This is all made possible by All of our buildings are donated or made from repurposed materials by on-site volunteers. These include a trailer of offices, multiple greenhouses, and a fully-serviced outhouse. We currently have a self-sustaining earth-ship greenhouse, a storage shelter, and a workshop under construction. We have two donated vehicles on site: a water truck and a delivery truck. The thousands of white barrels were donated by the Red Cross after last year’s flood. These are used, and reused, for daily deliveries to the Food Bank. Concern has been expressed about the appearance of Grow Calgary. We have every intention to make our farm as inviting for the community as possible. Our primary goals thus far have been to develop a volunteer base and get the food growing. Members of our community who need support with a basic need are our priority. We have now acquired the support system needed to attend to our full organization and management on-site and behind the scenes, which will include focused attention on the aesthetic appeal of our site for Calgarians and visitors alike. Now that our visibility has grown, the overwhelming support from the community has provided the opportunity to refine and expand what was a grassroots initiative. Key partnerships have been developed that will facilitate our development and operations moving forward. A Board of Directors has been formed and key personnel put in place. THE VALLEY BREEZE: OFFICIAL VOICE OF THE VALLEY RIDGE COMMUNITY ASSOCIATION continued on next page DECEMBER 2014 15 In Our City Grow Calgary connued As we serve the City of Calgary, we value ideas from its residents. The sustainability of our community is a shared goal. It takes all individuals working together to create a strong, secure, prosperous place to live. Valley Ridge residents are our closest neighbours and an important source of support. The farm is a public space and is always open. We are working directly with your community organization and City Councillor to form a strong partnership with Valley Ridge moving forward. Look forward to a special event next spring! Tech Tips PC Tip Whenever you need to quickly enlarge your screen image in a PC application, press and HOLD the Control key, Ctrl, and then rotate the mouse wheel. Rotating the wheel forward makes text and images bigger; backward, they get smaller. This will work in most PC programs including your Internet Browser. iPad Tip You can share the content of your iPad with others in the room using your television as a large monitor. Apple has a product called Apple TV, a small electronic device that comes with a remote. Apple TV connects directly to your television. AirPlay, a program on your iPad, allows you to wirelessly send music and any image on the iPad screen, including your photographs and game screens, through Apple TV and then onto your television. In addition, Apple TV allows you to directly connect to the internet, bypassing the iPad. You can watch movies, internet TV, YouTube, etc. Fire Exnguishers The best way to fight fires is through prevention and early detection. However, with training and practise, a portable fire extinguisher can be an effective tool to prevent injury and minimize property damage. Extinguishers are labelled with standard letters and symbols for the classes of fires they can put out. An ABC dry chemical extinguisher is a good fire extinguisher for home use. It fights fires caused by ordinary combustibles, flammable liquids and energized electrical equipment. If you need to use an extinguisher, remember the acronym P.A.S.S.: • Pull the Pin: unlocks the operating lever. • Aim Low: point the hose at the bottom of the fire. • Squeeze: the lever above the handle. • Sweep: the hose from side to side at the base of the fire. Maintain your fire extinguisher by: • Checking gauge to ensure pressure needle is in the green zone. • Checking for dents, rust, leaks or other signs of abuse or wear. • Testing pressure every 8 to 10 years. • Recharging after every use.
