St. Jerome Catholic Church San Antonio, Texas From the desk of our Parish Administrator Dear brothers and sisters in Christ, The Gospel today presents to us the scene of Jesus curing a man of an unclean spirit. The demon shouts as he leaves the tormented man: “What have you to do with us, Jesus of Nazareth? Have you come to destroy us? I know who you are—the Holy One of God!” The reaction of those present is of awe and admiration. They ask themselves about who this man can be that has the power to command demons. Throughout the Gospel of St. Mark, we see constantly this sequence when it comes to Jesus performing miracles: Jesus works out a miracle, the people remain astounded, and they make an open question to the listeners of the Gospel, who can this man be who can perform something extraordinary?” St. Mark was a man who does not want to impose the faith in Jesus by violence, but nevertheless he is intelligent enough to pose a question and expects a positive answer from his readers: If Jesus does good and performs miracles, therefore He must be, the Messiah, the Son of God. Therefore his teaching is valid and his sacrifice, redemptive. If we notice carefully, the demons proclaim the truth about Jesus: "The Holy One of God”. To know about Jesus does not mean to be redeemed. It is indeed the first step. What follows? Jesus must take root in our hearts and our whole life must be configured to that of the Son of God. Only then can we be called disciples of Christ. The Lord then poses a question to us. What is the quality of your faith? How strong is it? Is it able to transform your own life, your household and that of your acquaintances? A faith which is disincarnated from our every day life, has no value at all. St. James would say in his letter: "You believe that there is one God. Good! Even the demons believe that—and shudder, (Jn 2:19). Let us pray to the Lord Jesus today to increase our faith and to make it practical in our lives and may it transform our own world. Blessings to you and your family. Sincerely in Christ Jesus, Fr.
