"Chance favors the prepared mind."

Dear Parents,
Prior to embarking on any journey, whether taking a literal trip across the ocean, reaching a milestone
or, like Louis Pasteur, making a scientific breakthrough, it's good to have a roadmap. Along with a map,
it helps to have a clear sense of how you're going to get to there and what tools you'll need along the
way.
The National PTA organization published a parent guide for student success. It looks at Common Core
State Standards for mathematics, calling them a roadmap that helps "ensure that all students, no
matter where they live, are prepared for success in college and the workforce."
With that in mind, here are a few tips in helping your child navigate the roadmap to learning success:
• Become familiar with the standards: You can find them at
www.corestandards.org.
• Communicate with your child's teacher: Talk or email with the
teacher regularly. Express your goals for your child and where he or
she may need extra help and what supports you have in place outside
the classroom. Create a plan: This is especially important as your child
reaches high school and looks toward graduation and admission to
college. You and your student should know and understand what's
needed and expected, so there are no surprises.
• Set high expectations (and support your child in meeting them): Work
with your child to identify goals that consider his or her maturity,
learning style and interests. Write them down and keep them in a
visible place. When students can play a part in the process, they are
likely to feel more invested and have a better sense of the big picture.
The Kumon Math and Reading programs provide the tools your child needs to reach educational
success. The Kumon Method helps alleviate anxiety often associated with math and reading as
children master skills so they can move ahead with confidence. It assures that children commit skills to
memory, rather than simply learning concepts for a test, so they have solid footing for continued
success.
It is our chief goal to help every student be prepared to not only succeed but excel, from kindergarten to
high school senior. We are on this journey together. My staff and I are here to support you and your
child. Our door is always open for our Kumon families.
Thank you!
Sincerely,
Jeannie Ianelli
