In striving to continually provide opportunities for all
students to achieve success today and tomorrow, we
invite you to please join us as we share the most current
information on Move On When Ready, Georgia’s dual
enrollment program. Discussion of important next steps
and considerations for success in this program will take
place, as well as an opportunity for questions.
The meeting will take place at Hiram High School,
located at 702 Ballentine Drive, Hiram, Ga. At 6:30 p.m.
on Monday, February 1, 2016.

This project will run from January 4th to February 20th. There
is a donation box in the atrium at Ragsdale for collection.

Our Class This Week…
READING: Standards: CCSS.ELA-Literacy.RL.5.2 and CCSS.ELALiteracy.RL.5.3, CCSS.ELA-Literacy.RL.5.1
This week Hess’s group will review on summarizing, inferences,
theme, comparing and contrasting, and story elements.
Mulkey’s group will continue comparing and contrasting
characters and setting from a story.
We will continue our first chapter book titled, Maniac Magee.
WRITING/LANGUAGE ARTS: ELAGSE5L1c-d This week we will
continue verb tense to convey various times, sequences, states,
and conditions. Students will also recognize and correct
inappropriate shifts in verb tenses. We will also focus on
synonyms, antonyms, and homographs. We will continue
informational writing and begin opinion writing this nine weeks
following the Lucy Calkins format.
MATH: MGSE5.NBT.7 This week in math, we will turn our
attention to FRACTIONS (MGSE5.NF1/2). First, students will
learn to ADD/SUBTRACT fractions and mixed numbers (in word
problems too) with unlike denominators by finding a common
denominator and equivalent fractions to produce like
denominators.
SCIENCE: This week, we will continue our unit on ELECTRICITY
and MAGNETISM (S5P3). Student will continue to investigate
STATIC ELECTRICITY. Throughout the unit, they will also
determine the necessary components for completing an
electric circuit, investigate common materials to determine if
they are insulators or conductors of electricity, and compare a
bar magnet to an electromagnet.
Social Studies: SS5H3: urn of the Century: Describe the roles
of the cattle trails in the late 19th century, include the Black
Cowboys of Texas, the Great Western Cattle Trail, and the
Chisholm Trail. Describe the impact of westward expansion on
Native Americans; include the Battle of the Little Bighorn and
the relocation of Native Americans to reservations. We will also
begin to learn about the life of immigrants in the late 181900’s. Hess’s class is moving on to Cuba, and the sinking of
USS Maine.
