Live Stats: http://www.libertyflames.com/softball/XLIVE.HTM Free Audio Broadcast: http://www.hokietv.com/softball ACC Champs!: Last weekend, the Hokies accomplished something never done before in winning a conference regular season title. Now in their 12th year as a varsity program, the Hokies have previously played in the Atlantic 10, Big East and now the Atlantic Coast Conference, never winning a regular season or tournament title. With a 15-5 league record, Tech has captured the regular season title and will face eighth-seeded Virginia in the first round of the ACC Tournament on Thursday, May 10 at 3 p.m., in Tallahassee, Fla. Scouting the Flames: Liberty is 34-21 on the year and leads the Big South with a 9-3 mark. The Flames have an RPI of 40 and own wins over then-No. 23 Hawaii and then-No. 6 Michigan. At the plate, three big bats lead the way. Dawn Jeffs is batting .431 with 14 home runs and 35 RBI while senior Jessica Moore is hitting .425 with 17 RBI and 48 RBI. Ashley Williams is batting .344 with 11 home runs. As a team, Liberty hits .291 with 66 home runs. In the circle, Terra Lowe is 15-7 with a teamlow ERA of 2.43 and 144 strikeouts. Sarah Swor is 5-6 with a 2.78 ERA while Sarah Ellis is 12-7. The Flames’ team ERA is 2.78. Series History: The two schools have met 28 previous times with the Hokies winning 17 of those contests. Of late, Liberty has closed the gap, sweeping the Hokies last year at Blacksburg, 6-5 and 3-0. Liberty won the first five contests in the series which began in 1996, but Tech at one point won 14 of 15 to take a sizeable lead. Tech is 7-5 at Lynchburg, last playing there in 2005 and sweeping the Flames 4-1 and 4-2. Climbing the Charts: Junior pitcher Angela Tincher (Eagle Rock, Va.) is in the process of obliterating the Tech record books, but now she’s starting to make some noise in the ACC and NCAA record books. She has 1,370 career strikeouts, second-best in ACC history. She should break Jessica Sallinger’s record of 1,398 at the ACC Tournament. She is also the NCAA’s No. 2 pitcher in terms of career strikeouts per seven innings, averaging 13.4 per game. That total trails only the all-time strikeout leader, Cat Osterman of Texas, who averaged 14.3 Ks per seven innings. This year, she has a school-record 517 strikeouts in 240.2 innings of work, an average of 14.2 per seven innings. She also has won a school-record 32 games and stands tied for eighth all-time in NCAA history for career strikeouts. Last month, she became the 13th member of the NCAA’s 1,300 strikeout club and has been named one of 25 finalists for the USA Softball National Player of the Year for the second straight year. RPI Enhancers: The Virginia Tech softball team has already picked up 19 wins over teams that made the NCAA Tournament a year ago and stand ninth in the NCAA’s Official RPI Report. Tech has three wins over Tennessee Tech (RPI 42nd), two over North Carolina (21st), Georgia Tech (14th), NC State (17th) and Florida State (37th) and one over Georgia (34th), Illinois State (19th), Lehigh, Auburn (46th), Notre Dame, Ohio State (26th), Hofstra (43rd) and Tulsa (63rd). In addition, Tech has a 1-0 loss to eighth-ranked (RPI) Michigan and a win over 28th-rated South Carolina. Also, the Hokies have nine wins over teams ranked in one of the top 25 polls when they played the game and 17 wins against RPI Top 50 team. Mark Your Calendars: The NCAA will announces its 64-team Championship Field on Sunday, May 13 live between 3 and 4 p.m., on ESPNEWS. At that time, the 16 regional sites will also be announced. We Will Prevail: For the rest of the season, the Tech softball team will wear commemorative patches on their uniforms, as well as a sticker on their batting helmets, in remembrance of the 32 people killed in the tragedy on April 16th. A moment of silence will be held before each home event of every sport and the softball team will sport special warm up shirts featuring an except from Nikki Giovanni’s “We Are Virginia Tech” speech for the rest of the season. Working Summer Vacation: Angela Tincher spent part of her summer vacation donning the red, white and blue of the United States as part of the World University Games. She was one of four pitchers selected by USA Softball for the team which competed in Taiwan last July. For the 12-game tour (the U.S. went 9-3), she made seven appearances with three starts. She gave up four earned runs in 22.2 innings for an ERA of 1.24 with 23 strikeouts. The team started with a scrimmage against the U.S. Olympic Team, and then traveled to Taiwan for the World University Games. They then went to Chicago for a four-game series against the Chicago Bandits of the NPF to complete the 26-day trip. Tincher kept a blog on hokiesports.com, keeping fans up to date on her travels. To see those entries, go to: http://allstars.hokiesports.com/tincher What’s a Hokie? Just Virginia Tech, Please That's the most often-asked question regarding Virginia Tech athletics. The answer leads all the way back to 1896 when Virginia Agricultural and Mechanical College changed its name to Virginia Polytechnic Institute. With the change came the necessity for writing a new cheer and a contest for such a purpose was held by the student body. Senior O.M. Stull won first prize for his "Old Hokie" yell which still is used today. Later, when asked if "Hokie" had any special meaning, Stull explained the words he used had no hidden or symbolic meaning, but had been thought up in an effort to get attention. Hokie soon became a nickname for all Tech teams and for those people loyal to Tech athletics. Following is the "Old Hokie" yell in its original form: While the full name of the school is Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University, the school is commonly referred to as “Virginia Tech.” Founded in 1872, as Virginia Agricultural and Mechanical College, the university changed its named to Virginia Polytechnic Institute in 1896. Fans of the athletic department, as well as media covering the Hokies, shortened the name to VPI, but it eventually became Virginia Tech. The “State University” was added in 1970 to bring the official title to what it is today. Those covering Hokie athletics are asked to refer to the university as simply “Virginia Tech.” Virginia Tech University, VPI and SU, VPI&SU, VT or VA Tech are not recognized names and should not be used. The team walked from its hotel to visit 11-yearold Justin Harris, a huge Hokie fan who is undergoing treatment for Ewing Sarcoma, a rare childhood cancer. His battle with cancer began when doctors found tumors in his arms, but the tumors have since moved to his legs, and now throughout his entire body. Justin is from Crimora, Va., near Waynesboro, and has been battling this deadly disease for almost two years. He has been traveling between St. Jude’s Hospital in Memphis, his home in Crimora and now Charlottesville, where he is staying. His cancer took a turn for the worse and he is now unable to get back to St Jude, so he is at UVa, where his lungs and heart are filling with fluid. The team took him plenty of Tech gear, including T-shirts, stuffed animals, a card from head football coach Frank Beamer and then autographed a media guide for him. They told him they were dedicating the day’s games to him, which they won 2-1 and 10-0. After the game, the team signed the game ball and took it back to him. For more information on Justin, or to donate money to help defray his family’s rising medical costs, go to Justin’s Web site at http://www.caringbridge.org/visit/justinharris RPI Fever The first RPI report from WarrenNolan. com came out in early April, placing the Hokies 12th in the nation, with the nation’s seventhtoughest schedule in the nation. In all, five ACC teams are currently ranked in the top 40 and the ACC is rated the fourthtoughest conference in the country, behind only the Pac 10, SEC and Big 12, respectively. Tech is 12th as of April 25th with the No. 10 schedule in the country. Georgia Tech is second in the ACC, coming in at 15th. NC State (18), UNC (24) and Florida State (39) round out the ACC’s top five. First Pitch Classic Champions The Hokies opened the 2007 season by winning the Georgia State First Pitch Classic. The Hokies opened with a 2-0 win over Tennessee Tech before beating Tulsa, 2-1. The next day, Tech beat the host Tigers 1-0 but then fell to Alabama-Birmingham in a wild one, 10-9. The final day, Tech bounced back to beat Notre Dame 2-0 to claim the title. Angela Tincher (Eagle Rock, Va.) was named the tournament’s Most Valuable Pitcher after throwing three one-hit shutouts and striking out 49. Stephanie Savre (Simi Valley, Calif.) and Caroline Stolle (Chester, Va.) both made the all-tournament team after batting .467 and .429, respectively. Knight Games Champions Tech went 3-1 at the Knight Games to win their third tournament of the season. The Hokies opened with an 8-0 win over Jacksonville State before scratching out a 2-1 win over UCF. After falling to Eastern Michigan, Tech bounced back to beat Stetson 3-0 in the title game. She got back to her perfect ways on March 24, throwing the first extra-inning perfect game in school history when she beat Florida State 1-0 in eight innings. She struck out 18 and sat down all 24 batters that she faced to pick up her school-record 10th no-hitter of her career. For her play, she was named the National Co-Player of the Week by USA Softball and the NFCA’s National Player of the Week. The Broadway Bandit Callie Rhodes (Broadway, Va.) is the fastest player on the Tech team and should be running a lot. Rhodes currently has 28 swipes, coming on 31 attempts. As a team, the Hokies are 61-for-71 on attempts this season. Rhodes picked up her 100th career stolen base at Florida State on March 24 and now has 109 for her career. Gettin’ It Done In The Classroom Junior Angela Tincher (Eagle Rock, Va.) has been a spark plug on the field, but is also getting it done in the classroom. Last year, she was named a second-team Academic All-American What a Difference a Year Makes by ESPN the Magazine and carries an impressive 3.83 GPA in finance, Perhaps the biggest surprise this year has been the power surge from insurance and business law. Tincher isn’t the only one putting up impressive left fielder Caroline Stolle (Chester, Va.), who has a team-leading 10 round numbers in the classroom as the team had a GPA of over 3.0 in the fall. trippers. It shouldn’t come as a huge surprise as she hit eight as a freshman, Callie Rhodes (Broadway, Va.) is just as quick to pull in good but after hitting none last year, her performance this year has come as a grades as she is on the field. The time away from softball while recovering GPAs of 3.2 or high, led by Tincher. from the surgery helped her put the frustrating sophomore season behind her and she is now chow having a breakout season. The Strikeout Queen Last year, Angela Tincher (Eagle Rock, Va.) broke the ACC season Strong at the Leadoff Classic record for strikeouts (504) and is second in NCAA history in career Ks/7 The Hokies helped their RPI in a big way at the NFCA Leadoff IP with 13.4, trailing only former Texas great Cat Osterman (14.3). On Classic, winning their pool and advancing into the Gold Bracket before Feb. 18, Tincher she broke Virginia Tech’s record for career strikeouts of finishing in a tie for third place out of 20 teams. Tech opened with a loss to 926, set by Ashlee Dobbe from 1999-2002, and now stands with 1,370 for Coastal Carolina, but then picked up shutout wins over Lehigh and No. 18 her career, tying her for the eighth-most in NCAA history. Georgia before beating Illinois State, which is now ranked. In bracket play, the Hokies dropped a tough 1-0 game to No. 13 Thomas’ Career Michigan to finish the tournament 3-2. Walk This Way Junior catcher Kelsey Hoffman (Tequesta, Fla.) tied the school record when drew four walks in Tech’s 6-2 win over Georgia State on Feb. 11. In her two previous at bats in the game against UAB, she also drew walks, running her streak of consecutive walks to six. She extended that streak to seven when she drew a walk in her first at bat against Tennessee Tech. While it’s not an official record, it’s believed to be a school record as the only other player to draw four walks in a game (Megan Evans, 2002) didn’t draw any walks in the game previous or following. Perfection! Junior Angela Tincher (Eagle Rock, Va.) made the all-tournament team at the NFCA Leadoff Classic after going 3-1 with a 0.52 ERA and 54 strikeouts in 27.0 innings. But it was her performance against Lehigh that got the crowd buzzing. She tossed just the second perfect game in the Classic’s 12-year history in the 4-0 win. She threw just 80 pitches and struck out 16 in pitching the fourth perfect game in Virginia Tech softball history. At the USF-adidas Invitational, she tossed a pair of no-hitters to bring her total to three on the season. She opened the tournament with 18 strikeouts in no-hitting Fordham, and then came back in the final game of the tournament to strike out 12 in tossing the no-hitter against Ohio State. 1 25 50 75 100 150 200 250 300 350 400 3/15/96 3/12/97 3/11/98 2/26/99 4/2/99 4/8/00 4/29/01 3/14/03 4/27/04 2/19/06 3/4/07 Year 1996 1997 1998 1999 2000 2001 2002 2003 2004 2005 2006 2007 UMES Liberty Yale George Mason Saint Peter’s Massachusetts St. John’s St. Bonaventure Virginia Charlotte Stetson Overall 16-32 24-32 32-31 54-16 41-22 36-23 42-18 21-29 36-23 44-25 39-21 42-14 9-1 (5) 4-0 8-0 (5) 1-0 7-1 3-1 2-1 9-7 6-3 (8) 10-2 (5) 3-0 Conference 6-10 (Atlantic 10) 8-8 (Atlantic 10) 8-8 (Atlantic 10) 14-2 (Atlantic 10) 12-4 (Atlantic 10) 12-8 (BIG EAST) 12-8 (BIG EAST) 6-12 (BIG EAST) 9-11 (BIG EAST) 4-13 (ACC) 12-8 (ACC) 15-5 (ACC) Overall: 427-286 (116-97) in 713 games In the Polls The Hokie softball team made its 2007 debut in the USA Softball/ESPN Poll on March 20 and currently stands in the No. 18 spot, the highest its ever been ranked. The team also is ranked 23rd in the NFCA/USA Today Coaches’ Poll, marking the first time the Hokies have ever been in that poll. USA Softball Recognition Pitcher Angela Tincher (Eagle Rock, Va.) is one of 25 finalists up for the USA Softball Player of the Year Award. Last year, as a sophomore, she was one of 10 finalists for the award and is one of just four (three of whom are pitchers) from last year’s final 10 who return this year. The other returners are Monica Abbott (Tennessee, P, Sr.), Caitlin Lowe (Arizona, OF, Sr.) and Anjelica Selden (UCLA, P, Jr.). A Tough Schedule When postseason rolls around, the selection committee should find the Hokies’ RPI to among the nation’s best with the 2007 schedule head coach Scot Thomas put together. On this year’s slate are 12 teams that went to the NCAA Tournament last year. In addition, eight teams in either the top 25 or receiving votes in the NFCA or USA Softball Polls appear on the Hokies’ schedule this year, led by the University of Michigan, Illinois State, North Carolina, Ohio State, Florida State and Georgia Tech. This year already, Tech owns 19 wins over 2006 NCAA Tournament teams (three over Tennessee Tech, two over Georgia Tech, North Carolina, NC State and Florida State and one over Auburn, Notre Dame, Tulsa, Lehigh, Georgia, Hofstra, Ohio State and Illinois State) and nine wins over teams ranked in the top 25 when they played them. 2007 Atlantic Coast Conference Softball Championship Site - Florida TBD State May 10-13, 2007 Thursday May 10 Friday May 11 Saturday May 12 Sunday May 13 Championship Schedule Thursday: Game 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 Friday: Game 6, 7, 8, 9, 10 Saturday: Game 11, 12 #3 Georgia Seed No. Tech 3 Game 1 10:00 am (if necessary 13 & 14) Sunday: Game 15 #6 #6 Maryland Seed No. 6 Game 7 12:30 pm #2 NC No. State2 Seed Game 2 12:30 pm Game 11 11:00 am #7 Boston #7 Seed No.College 7 Loser Game 1 Game 13 5:00 pm (if necessary) Game 5 8:00 pm Loser Game 2 Game 10 8:00 pm Loser Game 8 #1 Virginia Seed No. 1Tech *Game 15 12:00 pm Game 3 3:00 pm #8 Virginia Seed No. 8 ACC Champion Game 8 3:00 pm #4 Florida Seed No. State 4 Game 4 5:30 pm Game 12 1:30 pm #5 North Seed No.Carolina 5 Loser Game 3 Game 14 7:30 pm (if necessary) Game 6 10:00 am Game 9 5:30 pm Loser Game 4 Loser Game 7 What a Weekend! In the first game, she went 4-for-4 with two swipes before picking up three more hits, an RBI and a stolen base in the second game. Going back to her final at bat against Georgia Tech the weekend before, she picked up a hit in eight straight at bats, the fourth-longest streak in NCAA history. NCAA Leaders The first NCAA stats were released on April 10 and to no surprise, Angela Tincher (Eagle Rock, Va.) is near the top of every pitching category. She had game-winning hits in consecutive games coming against Western Michigan and Ohio State over Spring Break and has been a steady player in the outfield. 13 Youth is Served As good as the 2007 season is going, Tech fans have to be even more excited about next year. All nine starting position players, including the top two pitchers, are scheduled to return. The only senior starter is Callie Rhodes (Broadway, Va.), Tech’s leadoff batter who is the DP. That spot appears to be in good hands with her sister, Jenna Rhodes the top candidate to take over. She proved she is capable to replace her big sis, picking up three hits in against Campbell.
