by 10 points with less than 4 minutes to play.
Adrian Cross returned a fumble for a touchdown
to pull Hutch within three points. After getting a defensive stop and a Panther punt,
the Blue Dragons had time for a 54-yard field goal attempt that clanked high off the
left upright on the final play of the game.
The Blue Dragons outgained Ellsworth 371-327, but were a minus-4 in turnover
ratio in which the Panthers scored 14 points off five Hutch giveaways.
After dropping three straight games, the Grizzlies have seemingly righted the ship
with two straight wins over then No. 20 Highland and Air Force Prep. Butler was tied
with Air Force Prep at 19-all at halftime and won the game 33-19.
During that three-game losing streak - losses to Iowa Western (49-7), Dodge City
(7-3) and Garden City (43-0) - the Grizzlies didn’t score an offensive touchdown and
produced only 10 total points.
Two years ago at B&G Products Stadium, the Blue Dragons broke through on
Butler’s home field for the first time since 1997 with a 35-26 win that propelled
Hutchinson to the 2014 Jayhawk Conference championship. Last year, the Grizzlies
returned the favor by defeating the Blue Dragons 52-28 en route to tying Dodge City
for the 2015 conference crown.

Rion Rhoades was named Blue Dragon football’s 17th head coach on December 12, 2006.
Now in his 10th season at HCC, Rhoades has
turned Blue Dragon football into one of the nation’s
elite football programs.
Rhoades has a 72-37 record with the Blue
Dragons. From 2009 to 2014, Rhoades guided
the Dragons to 61 victories, the most wins in any
six-year span in a program history
that dates back to 1928. Included
in that run of success are six consecutive Salt City Bowl victories
and the 2015 Jayhawk Conference championship.
Over his first nine seasons,
Rhoades has placed 66 Blue
Dragon players into NCAA
Division I programs, including 36 into Power 5
programs. Rhoades has now placed 130 HCC
players into four-year programs, an average of
16.3 players per season.
Rhoades has produced 16 NJCAA All-Americans, including six first-team All-Americans. There
have been 130 All-Jayhawk Conference/Region VI
players under Rhoades’ watch, 36 of which were first-team selections.
That success is now being seen at the professional level. Three of Rhoades
former Blue Dragons began the 2013 season on NFL rosters and two more former
Blue Dragons joined NFL teams in the 2015 Rookie Class.
Now in his 11th season as a junior college head coach – Rhoades spent one
season at Fort Scott before coming to Hutchinson – Rhoades is 79-42.

vs.
Butler
Two plays into a September 12, 2015 clash of Jayhawk Conference football
powers, things looked pretty good for the No. 3-ranked Hutchinson Community

HCC scored a touchdown on the second play of the game, but the Grizzlies

HCC took the opening kickoff and returned it to the Butler 22. The first play

2016 Blue Dragon Football
2016 Blue Dragon Game Notes Bluedragonsports.com
Trailing the Ellsworth Panthers by 10 points with 2:43 to play in the fourth
quarter, the Blue Dragons scored a defensive touchdown 14 seconds later and
had an opportunity to force overtime on the next to final play of the game.
Luke Niemeyer’s attempt of 54 yards had the distance, but squarely hit off
the left upright of the north end zone goal post and Ellsworth got out of Gowans
Stadium with a 23-20 victory over the Blue Dragons, spoiling Fall Homecoming
2016.
The Blue Dragons fall to 4-3 for the season heading into next Saturday’s
road game at Butler. Ellsworth, which won at Gowans Stadium for the secondstraight season, improves to 4-3, including three-straight wins.
Ellsworth scored 14 points off a season-high-tying five Hutch turnovers. But
the Panthers kept the Blue Dragons in the game when they had two touchdowns taken away with excessive celebration penalties before a Panther player
crossed the goal line. Ellsworth didn’t score on both of those plays.
Things looked bleak for the Blue Dragons, though, with 2:35 to play when
they committed their fourth turnover of the game with 2:55 to play in the fourth
quarter. On the next play, Ellsworth’s Tekendrick West broke loose for a 54-yard
touchdown run to give the Panthers a 23-13 lead with 2:43 remaining.
Hutch started its next drive at its own 47, but Cam Jones threw his fourth
interception of the game at the Ellsworth 6 with 2:35.
The defense then gave the Blue Dragons a chance when defensive tackle
J.J. Holmes forced a fumble that Adrian Cross returned 6 yards for a touchdown. Niemeyer’s point-after kick cut the Dragon deficit to 23-20 with 2:29 to go
in the game.
The Dragons couldn’t convert the onside kick, but forced Ellsworth to punt
with 1:30 to go and HCC had the ball at the Dragon 22. Hutch got a pass interference call to keep the drive alive on fourth down and Jones completed three
passes to drive the Dragons to the Ellsworth 37 with 6 seconds remaining.
With a strong south wind behind him, Niemeyer’s potential school-record 54
yard field goal attempt was hit square, but hit about halfway up the left upright to
end HCC’s comeback hopes.
The Blue Dragons outgained Ellsworth 371-327, but did so with a season-low
23 minutes, 50 seconds of time of possession.
Hutch rushed for 234 yards, getting 146 yards on the ground from Otis Williams, who had touchdown runs of 8 and 4 yards in the second quarter.
Jones completed 16 of 39 passes for 137 yards. Tyler Harris had three
catches for 25 yards. DeShawn Waller caught three passes for 15 yards.
Jayhawk Conference Players
of the
Week
Week 1 - Adrian Cross, Defense: Freshman safety Adrian Cross had a stellar
debut and made a key play in the No. 16 Blue Dragons’ 34-29 season-opening win
over No. 18 Coffeyville on Aug. 27.
Cross had 10 total tackles, including four solo stops, to lead a Blue Dragon
defense that had its back against the wall the entire fourth quarter against the Red
Ravens. He also had one tackle for loss and one pass broken up.
But with Hutchinson leading 34-29 late in the fourth quarter, Cross made one of
the critical plays of the game. With Coffeyville deep in Hutch territory, Cross intercepted a Red Raven pass with three minutes to play in the fourth quarter. Cross’
pick – the fourth of the game for HCC – stopped a Raven drive that started at the
Hutch 22.
Week 2 - Ronheen Bingham, Defense: Sophomore defensive end Ronheen
Bingham seemingly lived in the Iowa Western backfield on Sept. 3 as the No. 16
Blue Dragons knocked off the No. 6 Reivers 21-12.
Bingham, a 6-foot-2, 242-pound sophomore from Bennettsville, S.C., had 10 total
tackles, including 3.5 tackles for loss and 0.5 quarterback sacks against the Reivers
on Saturday. In addition to the plays he did statistically count for, Bingham continually created problems for Iowa Western’s offense with constant penetration.
Bingham made the play of the game on the final play of the contest. With the
Dragons up only 15-12 and Iowa Western in the red zone with 10 seconds to play,
Bingham scooped up a fumble and traveled 77 yards for HCC’s only touchdown of
the game, which clinched the program’s first win over Iowa Western.
Week 4 - Adrain Cross, Special Teams: Cross had three punt returns in the second half sparked the Blue Dragons from a 20-point deficit entering the fourth quarter
to take a fourth-quarter lead, only to fall 26-21 at Highland.

Ranked Foes Turns Around Under Rhoades
Before Rion Rhoades came to HCC in 2007, wins against ranked opponents
were rare for Blue Dragon Football. Between 2000 and 2006, the Blue Dragons
were 1-22 against nationally ranked competition.
Under Rhoades, HCC has improved to 18-25.
Last season, though, HCC went 0-4 against ranked foes. Hutchinson was 3-3
vs. ranked foes in 2013 and 2-3 against ranked competition in 2012.
This season, Hutch is 2-1 against ranked teams. The Blue Dragons defeated
No. 18 Coffeyville 34-29 and No. 6 Iowa Western 21-12, but dropped a 16-14
decision to No. 12 Garden City. The Dragons still have No. 10 Dodge City on
the schedule (Nov. 12).
Rhoades Builds His Legacy Among Blue Dragon Coaches
Now coaching in his 10th season with the Blue Dragons, Rion Rhoades has

Season-Opening Success
In 85 season openers, the Blue Dragons have a record of 49-34-2. Hutchinson
is 14-3 in season openers since 2000 and has won its last nine after a 34-29 win at
No. 18 Coffeyville on Aug. 27
HCC’s longest season-opening winning streak in team history is 11 from 1994 to
2004.
The Blue Dragons are even better in home openers, going 58-24-2 at Gowans
Stadium.
The Blue Dragons are 13-3 since 2000 in home openers and had won eightstraight in the first games of seasons at the friendly confines of Gowans Stadium
before their 2013 setback against No. 3 Navarro College.
The 2015 opener was only the seventh time ever that Hutchinson opens a season
against a non-NJCAA affiliated team. Before last season, the last time that happened was 1995 against Air Force Prep. It also happened in 1931 (McPherson
College), 1935 (Sterling College), 1941 (Kansas Wesleyan JV) and 1988 (Pittsburg
State JV).

Dragons Picked 3rd
in
Preseason KJCCC Rankings
For the first time in six years, Hutchinson wasn’t the first or second choice in the
annual Jayhawk Conference Preseason Coaches’ Poll.
The 2016 Blue Dragons were picked to finish third in the poll. Last season’s
league co-champions – Butler and Dodge
City – were the top two picks for 2016. The
2016 Jayhawk Preseason Poll
perennial power Grizzlies were the coaches’

season-opening opponent – was picked fourth.
3. Hutchinson
From 2011 through 2014, the Blue Dragons

The last time that Hutchinson wasn’t picked

when they were picked fourth in the preseason. The 2010 team finished second
and advanced to the Region VI championship playoff game.
Five Blue Dragons Currently In The Pros
The Blue Dragons have produced 25 players who have reached professional
status in program history.
According to records, standout running back Mack Herron parlayed his time at
Hutchinson in 1966 and 1967 into two stellar seasons at Kansas State University
and then became the Blue Dragons’ first-ever NFL draft pick, being selected in the
sixth round of the 1970 Draft by the Atlanta Falcons.
Since 1994, though, the number of Blue Dragon football players making it to
the NFL dramatically increased. Of the 23 Blue Dragons to reach the professional
level, 21 have come since 1994.
Seventeen former Blue Dragon players signed contracts in the NFL since 1994.
Several others have made major contributions in the Canadian Football League
and Arena Football.
The 2013 NFL Draft was historical for Blue Dragon football as Cordarrelle Patterson became the first Blue Dragon to be selected in the first round, going to the
Minnesota Vikings with the 29th overall pick.
A record three Blue Dragons were in the 2013 NFL rookie class. In addition to
Patterson, Angelo Pease went to Green Bay and Meshak Williams went to Baltimore as undrafted free agents.
The 2015 NFL Draft produced the Blue Dragons’ sixth drafted player in Markus
Golden (2011), who moved on to Missouri and was drafted in the second round by
the Arizona Cardinals, the second-highest drafted Dragon in team history.
Defensive tackle Toby Johnson (2012-13) was an undrafted free-agent signee of
the Tennessee Titans.
The 2016 Draft saw De’Vondre Campbell (2011-12) be drafted by the Atlanta
Falcons in the fourth round. Antonio Longino (2012) signed as an undrafted free
agent with the Cincinnati Bengals.
Heading into the 2016 season, former HCC quarterback Shaun Hill (1998-99)
is with his fourth NFL team. Originally signed by the Minnesota Vikings as an
undrafted free agent, Hill has also played for the San Francisco 49ers and Detroit
Lions. He also spent one season in NFL Europe with the Amsterdam Admirals.
Hill starts his 14th professional season returning to the team that originally
signed him, the Vikings. Hill is the longest-tenured Blue Dragon in professional
football.
