SUMMER WORKSHOPS AT ZYGOTE PRESS, INC.
Our philosophy for the 2009 summer season for educational programs is to provide more condensed but
informative class meetings at the lowest price tag we can offer. We have a stable of fabulous teachers
conducting classes that will provide both diversity and fresh perspectives. Also included with class enrollment
are open studio* credits that can be used whenever they work within your schedule.

Book Structures [for Dummies]
Shelly DiCello
A dummy is another name for a mock-up book
structure. Come and be inspired by the Raised
Voices: Books for Difficult Times exhibition and
learn some simple folding techniques and
structures. Shelly will outline the basics for
anyone interested in starting to work with the
book structure. Please bring a bone folder (Can
be purchased at Utrecht or Pat Catans) and we
will supply the rest. May 17th 1-3pm. $40
to create prints from this low cost printing
matrix. Come and explore the various ways
that images from photographs and drawings
can be transferred to plates and paper. Xerox
transfer, Paper litho, Crayola transfer and other
methods will be detailed and demonstrated.
Printing plates, inks and paper included, as
well as one Open Studio credit. Saturday, June

Intuitive-style Printing

Two evening classes will be set aside for this
crash course in letterpress to design your own
business card… handset the type or hear the
options and get directional guidance in ordering
your own (computer generated) polymer plate.
This class will have some proofing paper to use
but recommendations on paper will be outlined
to participants prior to class so they can bring
desired paper with them.
This class also
provides one open studio session [date TBA]
from 10-2 for the actual printing which is nonnegotiable where a technical assistant will be on
hand for further guidance and supervision. Two

This workshop explores the intuitive flow that

Combination printing, integrating drawing and
dry point techniques on zinc or copper.
Workshop will also include collaged materials
into the printing mix where unique prints and
variations will be the outcome of this day-long
whirlwind class. Christy will explore chine colle,
transfer drawing, wood relief, drypoint and other
monoprinting + direct-draw approaches.
Decision making at the press and working
directly is the spirit of this class. Plexiglass and
Luaun wood boards will be available for use.
Christy will provide a list of additional things for
you to bring (i..e. brushes, print paper etc.)

These polyester plates are awesome and can
host a range of photographic transfers and
drawings, made with simple affordable drawing
materials (Sharpie markers and pens). Once the
12x15 inch plates are created, see how easy it is

Starting Thursday, April 30th, Zygote is
taking it to the streets every other Thursday
till the end of July so we can show you our
stuff and catch some Cleveland foot traffic!
Zygote will be working with other

This is a call/email-ahead course where Anthony
Bartholomew will be hosting Open Screen night
availability for his expert facilitation. This is for
designers, graphic junkies and other
experienced artists itching to get a refresher or
basically some things screened-up for projects
and other ephemera-merchandising needs.
A n t h o n y w i l l a s s i s t y o u w i t h t a i l o re d
accommodations that will help with your special
needs. Cost and timing vary pending on scope
of project and print task. Screens can be presensitized prior to your meeting so you can
expose and print away during your
individualized session.
This quickie improvisational pressure printing
process is where textural relief patterns are
placed on the letter press rollers and inked up
local arts visibility in this region. Stop by for
a looky-loo. Other dates: May 14th, May
28th, June 11th, July 9th, and July 23rd

* Open Studio Sessions
While not a formal class, open sessions
provide the opportunity for you to come in
and use our facilities for $25 [nonmembers] and $20 [members] in four hour
blocks. Wednesdays [11am-3pm] and
Saturdays [noon-4pm]. Skilled monitor on
hand for questions + technical assistance.
