INTRODUCTION TO THE COURSE
Aims
Hola de nuevo and welcome to EN 2862: Spanish 2 This course aims at consolidating your
knowledge of Spanish and helping you understand more about the Spanish speaking world.
Following what was covered in the previous Spanish course, this course will help you build your
communication skills in Spanish by revising what was covered in the previous course and by
introducing relevant contexts for you to practice your Spanish, such as going on holidays to
Spain and doing some shopping.
This course also offers you the opportunity to do some self-study using multimedia materials as
well as exercises and readings for home study. Please feel free to ask as much as you need as this
is an essential part of the learning process. We also welcome your suggestions regarding course
contents and hope you will enjoy Spanish once more.
Learning Outcomes
Upon completing this course, you should be able to:

Produce simple messages in Spanish describing places and people’s preferences.

Plan a group vacation in Spanish and survive when shopping in Spanish.

textbook in the University Bookstore if you wish. Your tutor will inform you of which materials

Gente is a beginners course in Spanish designed to enable students to learn how to communicate
effectively in the language. You can order the following materials through the university
bookstore on campus. At this stage we only recommend you to have a copy of the Students’
book. When necessary, your instructor will provide materials that complement those in the
course book in order to ensure adequate understanding of key areas and to provide further
practice.
Español Moderno I 现代西班牙语 (第一册)is the textbook that is used in all the Universities
in Mainland China. It contains grammatical explanations in Chinese, and lots of exercises
suitable for beginners.

This course also has a Blackboard page with materials for the lectures as well as some listening
exercises. You are also encouraged to use the World Wide Web not only as a useful tool to find

This is a very good online tutorial with lots of information such as a translator, grammar
explanations, written exercises, oral exercises, written tests, verb drills, vocabulary practice,
cultural notes, etc. It also has a bookstore to select Spanish books.

This is the website developed by friends at HKU with lots of interesting exercises for students
using the book Gente and for other books.

This website, from Trinity University in Texas, offers a number of exercises to practice different
aspects of Spanish grammar such as verbs, nouns, adjectives, prepositions, etc. There is a
particular emphasis on the practice of verb tenses.

This website, developed by Trent University, Ontario, Canada, is an electronic workbook
designed to accompany the 2nd edition of ¡Arriba! Comunicación y Cultura (Prentice Hall).
However, the materials can be adapted for use with other textbooks. The exercises deal with all
different grammar aspects and it also has a vocabulary section.

Minor in Spanish Studies
You can now obtain a minor in Spanish studies if you take 15 credits after completing Spanish 1.
This will enable you to reach at least a pre-intermediate level of proficiency in Spanish and
acquire some valuable knowledge about the Spanish-speaking world, to be able to communicate
across cultures. After completing your minor, you will be in a position to acquire a working
knowledge in Spanish and become a competent professional in this language if you spend one or
two months of language and culture immersion in a Spanish-speaking country.

An intensive tutorial course covering the most important concepts, problems, and processes
in studying Spanish language.
Not sure this is as useful as it looks. In my opinion there is an excessive focus on grammar for a DVD course and
too much English instead of Spanish. At least the whole thing is presented in a funny way and may help clarify some
of the points made in class. It includes interactive exercises and some of the actors look pretty and handsome.

You will be required to produce a Spanish reading and writing portfolio as an important piece of
assessment in this course. From time to time, you will be assigned some reading and writing
exercises for homework. Please collect all this work and submit it at the end of the course for
assessment, as your reading and writing portfolio.
The reading and writing portfolio will at least comprise the following items:
1. Grammar exercises you may do on your own (You do NOT need to include the exercises
done in class). (OPTIONAL).
2. Assigned reading materials with questions to be answered.
3. A written description of one of your favourite holiday destinations that will also be presented
in class using Powerpoint.
4. A short written description of a hotel of your choice.
5. A short written description of how you normally spend your holidays.
Important Note: You are invited to submit your reading and writing portfolio in electronic form
and integrate your Spanish portfolio into your university e-portfolio. Training on how to produce
an e-portfolio will be provided.
