Descendants of William Robertson by by Rhonda Brownlow Rhonda Brownlow [email protected] [email protected] Generation No. 1 1. WILLIAM2 ROBERTSON (THOMAS1) was born 21 Sep 1842 in Gundaroo, and died 12 Mar 1925 in Goondah. He married ELLEANOR ELLIOTT 27 Oct 1862 in Canberra rg 2905, daughter of OWEN ELLIOTT and CATHERINE MCALPINE. She was born 25 Oct 1845 in Gundaroo, and died 27 May 1919 in Yass. WILLIAM ROBERTSON: In about 1878 William acquired the “Sutton Grange” homestead from Henry Barber. The house is situated 38 kilometers from Yass, in off the Burrinjuck Road, between it and the Black Range Road. The younger sons were born within in three years of moving. By this time numerous blocks of ground in the area were taken up by various members of the family, covering quite a large area, about 11,500 acres. At the time much of it was leased by Mr. A.B. Triggs of Yass. After clearing the land cattle and sheep were raised. Horses played and important role in country life at this time, for transport as well as for work. Cream, butter and honey produced fro sale over the years. William was a keen fisher and in later years. He rode a grey pony to Woolgarlo, “but he didn’t always catch fish!” He died at “Sutton Granger” on 12.3.1925 and is buried in Yass Cemetery with his wife Eleanor. In the same section are the graves of their sons Eugene, Edwin, Albert, Arthur, Victor and Roy, together with Eugene’s wife Louisa, Victor’s wife Eva, Roy’s wife Elsie and grandsons REFLECTIONS Dedicated to William Robertson Esq. The Murrumbidgee River, that runs a curling course I travelled o'er a bit of it, on Robertson's brown horse. From the junction down to Weston's to close to Barren Jack We started on a Sunday morn, along a rugged track. The first house was Old Sutton's. I think he saw us both And further on Dwyer's who's noted for his oath. The next I think was Skillin's but we went around A decent bit of pasture but stoney looking ground. And then we came to Old Fred Day, a drawin' in his wheat His look at us, why! Made us think, we're chaps he'd like to meet. But we weren't having any, so off we set again To have a look at Wilson, of white eyed horse's fame. He's a funny looking character, at first look he'd remind You of the early forties and one horse plough behind. Resuming then our journey, we settled down again And got in sight of Moor's my lads, when Lord it looked like rain. But the river was between us, s we wisely trotted on To Morton 's just in time to see, that the sun hadn't shone. We had a consultation there, but dogs they were about. I thought that five of them at once is worse than English gout. So Daddy off his horse he jumps and down the yard he goes A sapling in his hand to use, if those were his blanky foes. But as we found out afterwards, the beggars wouldn't bite Although the horrid noise they made would make you think they might. We left them as we found them and off we went again To shortly strike the river, of which you know the name. And them among the rocks and sand, we battled for a while The time I was agetting, why! Old Jack he had to smile. You see I wasn't used to it, so I thought it pretty rough And thanked the Lord almighty, that he'd made me pretty tough. We negotiated safety and over at last To come upon a lovely place, with something like a fast. We did not view the scenery, but made straight for the house And tied up the blanky horses up, too late to have a slouch. A hurried introduction, at dinner lent a hand. They must have thought at Weston's they're hearty kind of brand. And then the caves they showed up, those girls from down below They are alright sort to meet, a thing or two they know. Our pleasure trip came to an end, we started for the home Well satisfied and wiser, than before I had that roam. Extracts from a letter written by Mr. R. McCallum, grandson of Argyle McCallum of "Goodhope" near Yass, to Mr Roy Robertson, late of "Sutton Grange" Yass on 27 March 1957. "When we had the Woolgarlie country, the Yass River was the only boundary between us, so of course, the sheep got well and truly mixed - and I can still see your old Father (William) now, trailing behind a mob, as they came to the yard, with his whip hanging over his arm and a hunk of raddle in his hand. He always had a cotton lash on his whip and kept it raddled. He had an eye like a hawk and if he spotted one of his ewes mothering a lamb, he would flick the lamb and leave a raddle mark on him". Extracts form a letter written by Mr. R McCallum, to Ken Robertson, late of "Sutton Grange" Yass on 22 November 1965. Apart from Macoolama, the first Robertson home was down on the Yass River. It stood there for many years. No one lived there in my time. There had been quite a good garden there". Your father's grandfather (Thomas) built Marcoolma and had a big apple orchard there and for years it had a big reputation for production of apples, but Codling Moth got in and there seemed to be no known method of dealing with them, the orchard was ruined. Eugene your father's eldest brother, lived there after the old man shifted to Bowning" ELLEANOR ELLIOTT: Burial: Queanbeyan Children of WILLIAM ROBERTSON and ELLEANOR ELLIOTT are: 2. i. EDWIN ROBERTSON 12.8.1864 –12.4.1939 Edwin George was the second son of William and Eleanor Robertson. He was born at Woolgarlo, where he spent his early childhood. He was about fourteen years old when his parents moved to “Sutton Grange”. At that stage there were four younger children so there would have been no lack of jobs to be done. Later he took up land in his own name and probably worked for other landholder, as his brothers are known to have done. No details of Edwin’s activities have been found. He lived at “Sutton Grange” with his parents and later with his brother Roy and his wife Elsie, until his death in 1939. In his later years as he leased his property to Roy, who subsequently inherited it. “The death occurred at the Yass District Hospital at 6 o’clock yesterday morning of MR E G Robertson of “Sutton Grange”, bachelor, aged 74 years. Deceased was only ill a week before his death and up till to that time he enjoyed an active life. A son of the late Mr. and Mrs. W Robertson, deceased was born at Woolgarlo, then owned by his parents. Incidentally, deceased’s parents owned Woolgarlo in 1870 when the great flood occurred. Subsequently the late Mr. Robertson took up adjoining country and followed grazing pursuits on it. He is survived by Mr. C. V. Robertson, Mr. R. C. Robertson and Mrs. A. P. Elliott. A scion of one of the oldest pastoral families in the district, deceased was held in the highest esteem. It is interesting to note that his grandfather, who was the original Robertson to settle in the Yass District, assisted to plant the beautiful pines in Victoria Park. The funeral was conducted by Mr. W> McIntosh form St. Clements’s to the Church of England Cemetery this afternoon”. 3. 4. iii. MYRA ROBERTSON, b. 03 Jul 1865, Woolgarlo; d. 16 Dec 1944, Hornsby. iv. MAY ROBERTSON 5.6.1869-27.12.1918 May Robertson was the fifth and youngest daughter of William and Eleanor, She was born at Woolgarlo and was about nine years old when her family moved to “Sutton Grange’ little is know of her childhood, but she later became a prolific writer of postcards to members of the family and, no doubt friends. Much mention her attendance at dances, being at Nyngan on more that one occasion, probably with her brother, Arthur to visit her Aunt Jessie Culgan and her many cousins, The cards tell about having dresses made in Sydney for special occasions. The dressmakers were ladies by the name of Paterson, who also sewed for May’s mother Eleanor. The family stayed at Botany on many occasions on their visit to the city. During her busy life, May had a dairy from which cream was sent to Goulburn by train. A account exists dated 31 August 1918, form the Argyle Co-op Central Dairy Co, Goulburn showing receivable of cream 4 cans, 244 lbs., 101lbs first grade butter @ 15 six shilling freight and a cheque for six pounds and fourpence. Another document, under the Pure Food Act, 1908 guarantees the purity of honey. Guarantor, May Robertson, witness, E G Robertson (brother) 1912. A card included mentions “lots of honey”. The old dairy building with “lean-to-honey-house” was demolished at the same time as the old house. Roy her younger brother spoke about milking numerous cows as a lad. Nothing was a burden to aid this well loved sister who died at ean early age of 49 years in 1918. vi. ALBERT WILLIAM ROBERTSON, b. 17 Dec 1871, Woolgarlo; d. 25 Oct 1905, Woolgarlo. ALBERT ROBERTSON 17.12.1871-25.10.1905 The sixth child and third son to William and Eleanor, he was about se He seven years old when the family moved to “Sutton Grange”. Not a lot is know of Bert’s formative years and it appears he did not own any property unlike his older brothers. He died suddenly on 25.10.1905 from a cerebral tumour, although he believed he was suffering form a dental problem (the tumour was probable pressing on the trigeminal nerve, causing extreme pain). His death was so unexpected as his brother Victor was writing to his fiancee Eva Boulding the night before and had to write a postscript "To think I was writing this after tea and poor Albert was dead before morning”. vii. ARTHUR HERBERT PERCY ROBERTSON, b. 25 Jun 1874, Woolgarlo; d. 04 Nov 1913, Woolgarlo. ARTHUR ROBERTSON 26.6.1874-4.11.1913 Arthur Elliott Percy Robertson was born at Woolgarlo and as well as a having tutors he attended Yass District School as a boarder. He must have lived at “Sutton Grange” and grazed his land. Rheumatism set in early 1900’s. In December 1907 he had a serious fire in his Bogolong Creek paddock. Arthur, Eugene and Will, were in the paddock when the fire started. “Who dropped his pipe?” The rheumatism affected Arthur greatly and for seven years his brother Edwin worked his land for him and Roy and May helped look after him at different times. In April 1906 Victor was considering going with him by steamship to Cairns, no doubt to get away from the cold weather. By 1908 Arthur was in Lewisham Hospital then later in Wagga Wagga Hospital. Thein in 1909 at the Sanatorium Wahroonga and later in Nyngan where he was nurses by nuns. May and Roy were with him at this time. During April 1910 Roy accompanied him to Rotorua in his search for health but the mineral bath did not help him, the weather was getting cold and he was having difficulty writing a postcard to Victor. For some years he was unable to walk and had to move about in a wheel chair and prior to his death he was bedridden and blind. Arthur died at home on 4.11.1913 aged 34 years and his estate was later granted to his father William 5. 6. viii. ix. x. xi. MALE ROBERTSON, b. 1891, Yass. Generation No. 2 2. EUGENE THOMAS3 ROBERTSON (WILLIAM2, THOMAS1) was born 18 Aug 1863 in Gundaroo, and died 06 Jan 1934 in Yass. He married LOUISA SWIFT 06 Apr 1887 in Woolgarlo, daughter of AMOS SWIFT and AMELIA ROBERTSON. She was born 1866 in Yass rg 16761, and died Jun 1934 in District Hospital. EUGENE THOMAS ROBERTSON 18.8.1863- 6.1.1964 Eugene Thomas, was the first child of William and Eleanor Robertson, born at Gundaroo on the 18 August 1863, suggesting that Eleanor went to the home of her parents, Owen and Catherine Elliott for the birth. According to other records William and Eleanor were residing at “Fairview” on Bogolong Creek by this time. The properties of “Mahcoolma” (Carroll’s Creek), “Fairview” (on Bogolong Creek), “Sutton Grange” on Black Range Road and Woolgarlo off Black Range Road, “The Summit”, Burrinjuck Road, are all made up of many lots ranging from 40 acre to 320 acres which was the limit set per person by the Robertson Lands Act of 1861 and where parents with many children could settle on larger areas (I.E. number of persons by 320 acres). Under the Crown Grants Scheme conditional purchase was made within five years of occupancy for the sum of one pound an acre, if stock numbers required greater area, conditional leasehold of land was permissible. At 1 ½ pence per acre. Another method was where a wealthy landholder was able to lease paddocks to adjoining graziers, eg. The Crown Grant of some “Mahcoolma: lots shows Matthew Armour as original purchaser under the Lands Act on 16th September 1863. He was obviously squatting and grazing this land years previously and leased it to Thomas Robertson, Eugene’s grandfather, who planted the famous orchard about 1856 and purchased the land on 10 May 1867. Eugene married his first cousin Louisa Swift (the fourth child from the marriage of William’s sister Amelia to Amos Swift) on 6 April 1887 at “Mahcoolma” and either managed or leased the property form his grandfather Thomas form about 1883 to 1900. Thomas retired and moved to the cottage on Lots 20/21 Bogolong Street, Bowning that he purchased from Mrs. M Ryan on 27 December 1882 for 1000 pounds. Eugene and Louisa had three children born “Mahcoola” –Keith Richard 7.12.1888, Clare Holly 20.6.1897 and Eric Eugene 1.10.1899. Eugene moved to “Fairview” about the end of 1899 when a mortgage over some lots of “Fairview” was taken out with financier A B Triggs and subsequently discharged on 3 September 1907. The house was built pise style with corrugated iron roof over local cut timbers, a large veranda to the east with a wooden floor. A cement-coated tank is all that remains. About 100 metres north on the rise a three stand shearing shed was built with overhead shaft driven by a large belt from the engine room. This shed was used by William, Eugene, Edwin and Roy Robertson for their various flocks of sheep until 1940 when the shed was burnt down by a bush fire. As the property was then owned by Ray Armour (purchased from Eugene Thomas Robertson’s estate in 1934) a new shearing shed was built at “Sutton Grange”. A part time Government School was set up in January 1900 at “Fairview”, sharing a teacher with other part time schools at “Flindale” and “Benanbra”. However additional children did not arrive as expected and the school’s government franchise was stopped in May 1901, when it then became the responsibility of the parents to provide a teacher, schoolroom and accommodation. This was classed as a subsidised school. The school operated at “Fairview” at least until 1915 when a reference was given for 21/2 years in charge of “Fairview” subsidised school to teacher Miss Mary M Drummond by the school promoters Mr E T Robertson and Mr W Skillen. Tragedy struck Eugene and Louise when their 17-year-old son Keith was involved in a horrific horse and sulky accident, dying several hours later at 11pm on Saturday 3 March 1906. KEITH RICHARD ROBERTSON: Accident Report –Yass Tribune Courier March 5th 1906 At Bookham on Saturday after the Annual Races Saturday 3rd March 1906 – A Fatal Accident. It was unfortunate that day should have ended with an extraordinary accident, resulting in the death of a promising youth, the son of a respected local district resident. After the last race, amongst a group of horseman who left the course for home was Keith Robertson, eldest son of Mr. & Mrs. Eugene Robertson, riding a horse somewhat difficult to manage. On the Illalong Road, on the way out to the main Bookham Road the party of horsemen met Mr. W Marin’s sulky, on the way back to the course for some children, travelling quickly as were those on horseback. The animal young Robertson was riding swerved sideways onto the sulky and before anything could be done to avert a collision the shaft of the sulky struck the saddle and carting up caught the rider in the groin with fearful force breaking off about 18 inches on the shaft, the end of which remained in the lower part of his stomach, which he pulled out himself. It penetrated the outer and inner coatings of the stomach and lacerated the entrails. Those on the scene immediately came to the rescue and the unfortunate fellow, by this time in a state of collapse, was taken on to the Bookham Hotel about a quarter of a mile away and put to bed, the wound dressed as far as possible. After a while he rallied and recognised those around the bed, but later he became unconscious again and died at 11 o’clock on Saturday night, the accident happened about 7.15pm. A wire was sent from Bookham for the Doctor but before he had an opportunity of reaching there death had taken place. Dr. Thane (Coroner) went out and held a formal inquiry, finding the whole sad occurrence an unfortunate accident. It threw a gloom over Bookham on Saturday night and the greatest sympathy was felt for the bereaved parents. The deceased was only 16 years of age; the funeral took place this afternoon 5.3.1906 to the Yass Cemetery, where the internment took place. 7. 8. ii. MYRA3 ROBERTSON (WILLIAM2, THOMAS1) was born 03 Jul 1865 in Woolgarlo, and died 16 Dec 1944 in Hornsby. She married ALEXANDER PATRICK ELLIOTT 03 Apr 1890 in Woolgarlo, son of EDWIN ELLIOTT and ELIZABETH DYCE. He was born 1861 in Queanbeyan, and died 27 Jun 1939 in Hornsby. MYRA ROBERTSON 3.7.1865 –16.12.1944 Myra Robertson was born at Woolgarlo. She grew up at Woolgarlo until her parents bought “Sutton Grange” and moved there when she was about twelve. AS the eldest daughter a lot would have fallen on to help her mother with cooking, sewing and helping with the younger children. Myra was very intelligent, a good needlewoman and a good shot with a shotgun. Myra and the boys had tutors and were very keen at learning. One teacher we know about was Jim Thomson, a favourite with all the family. Another was A Hughes. Myra was considered an “old maid” on the shelf (aged 24) when she married her first cousin Alexander Patrick Elliott at “Sutton Grange” on 2 April 1890. Alex had been given a teaching appointment at a one-teacher school at a property “Cocomingla” between Boorowa and Cowra and they moved there. Their five sons were born there, also a daughter. Their second daughter’s birthplace is mentioned as Cowra. Alex taught the academic subjects and Myra taught sewing. Someone, I think it was Alex, taught a little drawing. They taught at a few one-teacher schools Bennett Springs, Wallaroo, Greenthorpe and Springdale, near Temora. They stayed at Springdale until Alex retired in 1925. The boys seemed to do the work with cutters as teenagers. Some chose their careers early. Ted went to colleges and late became a very well know sheep and wool man in Australia and New Zealand. Ivan went into banking and ended in the Mint in Melbourne. Ron became a bus driver with his own buses at Turramurra and the Bus Company became part of the Deane Bus Company at Turramurra. Athol drove buses for a while then went into the building trade. Cyril seems to have been a bit of a lad and worked on farms and broke in horses. Ted, Ivan and Cyril went to WW1. Cyril was killed in action in Belgium. The altar in All Saints Anglican Church at Springvale was given in memory of Cyril. Ted spent time in the desert. He was in the Light Horse and was there from 1916-1919. Cyril was sent home much about the time waiting in Capetown on the way to England. He and Ivan were together part of the time in England and may have gone to France together. They were in the infantry. Both Ted and Ivan sent photos home to their parents. Ron and Athol appear to have worked on NSW railways during the war. Alex was very civic minded and worked on many committees, also church committees. Myra also supported him and worked for organisations herself. She was also a keen gardener and grew vegetables and ran chooks wherever she lived. Myra was known to shoot goannas that came after the eggs. Alex also wrote articles for newspapers. He went to conferences in Sydney and even a Garden Party at Government House in 1912. Daisy died at age two and half of convulsions. Muriel stayed with he parents and tried to have secondary education in Temora but strikes etc. seemed to intervene and then she was needed at home to cook and sew and help look after her older brothers. The boys left home but she stayed with Myra and Alex and moved with them to Turramurra in 1925. Muriel was very musical and played the piano form many functions. She lived at home until she married at the age of 27. In Turramurra all the Elliott’s there were very involved with St. James Anglican Church. Muriel was married there in 1930 and her children were all baptised there. Alex was buried from there in 1939. After Alex died Myra lived alone for a while, then was in a nursing home for a little while, then she went to live with Muriel and Les Browne until she died in 1944. She had become blind, which was very sad, as she could not tat or crochet. She married EDMUND BOULDING 04 Aug 1897 in Bowning, son of JOHN BOULDING and SUSANNA SMITH. He was born 1871 in Yass, and died 30 Dec 1960 in Boorowa. JESSIE CATHERINE ROBERTSON 20.5.1867-16.6.1936 The fourth child Jessie was born at Woolgarlo and married Edmund Boulding in St. James Church; Bowning on 4.8.1897, the witnesses to the marriage being Albert Robertson and his sister-in-law Louisa. Edmund was the son of John and Sussanah Boulding (nee Smith) who had been neighbours of the Robertson’s, having lived at “Burnside”, Devils Pass. At the time of the marriage Ted was employed as a sheep overseer at “Mountain View” near Tangmangaroo (the present “Laverstock). Ted and Jessie lived at “Mountain View”, and had three sons – Harold 1898, Mark 1904, Bruce 1909, before moving to Dry Street, Boorowa in 1916. Bruce died tragically in 1923, aged 14 years. A senior pupil of the Boorowa Public School, his funeral was attended by nearly every child in the school, together with the teaches. Six class mates acted as pall bearers, whilst the headmaster and a large number of pupils marched in front of the hearse to the cemetery. Jessie was an excellent needlewoman and as example of her tapestry worked in 1888 remains in the family. She died suddenly at her home in 1936. She had been a prominent member of St. John’s Church Women’s Union, the Parents & Citizens Association and the local branch of the County Women’s Association. Ted and Harold continued to live in Dry Street and always came to his sister Eva’s home “Karingal” Tangmangroo. For Christmas dinner and had numerous threepences in their pockets for Eva’s grandchildren. Harold and Mark owned a property on the Kentu Road which backed onto the Boorowa River and Mark and His wife Rita (nee Friend) went to live there after their marriage in 1928. Mark and Rita had three children Edna 1930, Amy 1931, and William 1937They raised sheep and pigs, Mark did most of his own shearing and still rode his horse into town in later years. Ted was a life member of the Boorowa Show Society and was a keen exhibitor in the cattle and dog sections, receiving numerous first prizes for his exhibits. He excelled at training sheep dogs. He was also a keen gardener and an ardent supporter and director of the Boorowa District Hospital for may years, playing a leading part in the progress and advancement of the hospital. He was also very good at wood craft and examples of his serviette rings and letter openers remain, all having been carved from a pen knife. Harold married Viva Noakes in 1961and lived in the family home in Dry Street house until his death in 1972. Children of JESSIE ROBERTSON and EDMUND BOULDING are: 14. i. He married EVA BOULDING 10 Jul 1907 in "Charleville" Tangmangaroo, daughter of JOHN BOULDING and SUSANNA SMITH. She was born 06 Jul 1879 in Burnside Spring Creek, Yass rg 26360. CURTIS VICTOR ROBERTSON 22.12.1878-7.4.1947 The eighth child of William and Eleanor was always known as Victor. He was the first of the children to be born at “Sutton Grange”. In his early days he managed the property for Hugh Stewart at Hovell’s Creek but moved back to “Sutton Grange’ when Stewart’s lease expired in 1903. He was involved with the survey work for Bunninjuck Dam and he and Charles Weston assisted the surveyor. He remained at “Sutton Grange” unit his marriage to Eva Boulding on 10.7.1907 at the bride’s home “Charleville” Tangmangaroo, the witnesses being Roy Robertson and Jessie Boulding. Eva was a sister of Edmund Boulding who had earlier married Victor’s sister Jessie. The Boulding’s moved to “Charleville’ when Eva was only nine months old. Victor and Eva became engaged when she was 22 years old but did not marry for another six years. Their first home was “Valrosa”, between Tangmangaroo and Rye Park and whilst living their four children were born. Bright 1908, Lance 1909, twins Mavis and Jean 1912. Bright was named aster her English cousin Bright Boulding. The house on “Valrose” was rather meagre by today’s standards but Victor was bale to build a new home for his family up on the hill above the original site’ He sold “Valrosa” to T C Hazell in 1919 and for a time they lived at “Charleville” with the Bouldings until the house on “Elmwood” on the banks of the nearby Burrowa River was vacated by Eva’s brother Charlie and his wife Maria. In 1923 Victor purchased 1131 acres from Best Brothers nut it was not until 1925 that it was the new house was completed. He named the property “Karingal” and for 59 years was just that for various members of the family. During the time of “Elmwood” the children received their education from a series of governesses, one of whom, Winifred Burkitt, later wrote several novels which contained concealed references to her life at Tangmangaroo. The four bedroom house was built with cement blocks, which were made on the site. The sand and water being carted from the Boorowa River. Bright married Ethel Burgess in 1939 and Lance married his cousin Nancy Boulding in 1940. Lance and Nancy built a cottage on a portion of “Karingal”. Jean married Charlie Warmsley in 1942 and went across the road at “Dellyvale”. These three marriages produced eight granddaughters. Victor died in 1947 and Bright and Lance continued to run: ”Karingal”, Bright concentrating on breeding poll sheep and Lance on wheat and pig farming. Until the nearly 1940’s Lance had carried out all his farming activities with a horse team. Eva and Mavis went to live in Pettit Street, Yass in 1957 and Bright and Ethel moved from Yass to “Karingal”. Following Eva’s death in 1963 the property was transferred to the two sons and Lance named his property “Karingal West”. Bright sold “Karingal” in 1980 and following Lance’s death in 1982, the property passed from Robertson ownership after 59 years. Victor was a quiet man who loved dancing and enjoyed playing the violin. He was a loyal supporter of his church and for many years was a warden and treasurer of All Saint’s Church, Tangmangaroo.
