Meade Wins 5th Annual Kayettes’ Tug-O-War Contest
On Tuesday, January 10th, Meade Kayettes hosted the 5th annual Tug-O-War against Southwestern Heights. Participants from Meade and Heights,
went head to head to raise money for Molly Brenner (pictured in the middle below) and her family. Meade came out victorious. In the end, $2,160 were
raised. What a treat to have Molly back in the high school for a picture with the Kayette members.

Exchange Students Bring Culture
to the Junior High Classroom
The Junior High classes enjoyed hearing from the six exchange students studying at
MHS. The students learned about differences in culture, schools and food in Spain,
Norway, Japan, Thailand, and Italy. The exchange students did a fantastic job of
sharing what life is like elsewhere and the joy of experiencing life here in Meade,
Kansas! The junior high would like to send a big THANK YOU to each of them for
sharing and giving us a glimpse of their lives!

8th Graders Begin a Living History Project
at Lone Tree Retirement Center
The 8th grade class spent time getting to know some special residents at the Lone
Tree Retirement Center as they embarked on a project highlighting living history.
The students prepared interview questions and sat with residents to find out about
their childhood experiences, career highlights, military involvement, and lifetime
experiences throughout their journeys. The students enjoyed their time so much,
that they've requested more time to visit! The students will prepare presentations
about the lives of their resident and share them at LTRC during the month of
February. Many thanks to the staff at LTRC and these residents for helping us learn
about the rich history that resides right here in our home town.
Recently our high school boys and girls
competed in the High Plains League
Tournament. Both teams won their first
round games and played in the
championship games. I also had the
Mr. Harshberger
privilege of taking the high school and Jr.
high band to play during those last two games. It was exciting to watch the
boys play their hearts out to a team that clearly outsized our Buffaloes and
to nearly win the championship. The girls worked as a team to once again
win the tournament.
Even with all this said, what impressed me the most was our students
and staff during this long week of the tournament. I was told directly by an
individual how great our kids were. I totally agree! I watched our players
listen to their coaches and do everything they could to become league
champions. Win or lose – working together as a team at such a high level
makes you a winner in my books. Our coaches pushed the players, all while
requiring our athletes to be respectful and represent themselves and the
school well during these games.
When I took the band students, they helped to load and unload even in
the rain. They had to move from one side of the stands to the other side for
the 2nd game and I never heard them complain. They cheered and played
their hearts out to support our Buffaloes. Even our bus driver commented
on how good these band members where. By-the-way we were the only
band at the tournament from any school – Thanks Meade Pep Band!
People sometimes talk about how bad “these kids are now-a-days.”
Well, I am here to tell you this past week was a proud moment to be the
superintendent of “these kids.” And oh by-the-way “these kids” helped raise
well over $2,000 for Molly Brenner and her family just the week before. Just
this week “these kids” assembled in the gym, dressed in blue to form the
letter “H,” and posted a picture on Twitter and Facebook to show support
for the young man who died in Hooker last week. I see things like this every
week, so there are many instants I am very proud of “these kids.”

President’s Day
February 2017
MES/MJH hosted the HPL Math Contest last week. Our mathletes made a good showing
on the day. Overall, our 8th grade team finished in 3rd place, and our 5th grade team
came in at 4th place. Lakin won the 8th grade division. Wichita County took first place
overall for 5th, 6th, and 7th grades. All four MES fifth grade students placed in the top ten
in the Geometry division. At least one MES/MJH student from all four grade levels placed
in the top ten for both Problem Solving and Mental Math. Congratulations to our MES/MJH
Mathletes and their teachers on another great contest!
Kansas is pushing for its students to answer the question, "What am I going to do after
high school?" If your student is not confident in his/her response, Wichita State University
is hosting an event called Major Exploration Day to help students find some direction. It is
open to students of any grade 9-12.
The event kicks off with speaker Daniel Seddiqui, author of 50 Jobs in 50 States. He
will talk about his experience of graduating college without any idea what to do and share
what he learned. Next, students will work with the Career Development staff and complete
an aptitude test to help find strengths and match those to possible majors and careers. The
rest of the day will be filled with lunch, time with alums, current students, faculty and staff to
answer any questions about any areas of interest.
If this sounds beneficial to your student, please RSVP at wichita.edu/visit.
