Casey constructs his whips in his 26’x8.5’ mobile
trailer shop. This allows him to move his shop as the
family will return to California in June after Katrina
returns back to the States. The long trailer is quite handy
as he prepares the long strips of leather prior to braiding.
The process of making a whip is quite timely, ranging
from 10-16 hours. Casey is fortunate enough to have his
mother-in-law Linda Rotness watch their son while he is
working. Casey typically works at least four long days,
starting very early in the morning.
Most all of the whips produced by Dove Whips
Western Company are made to order. Many of the whips
are made and available through various companies,
such as Western Stage Props, Northern Whip Co.,
Midwest Whips to name a few. Western Stage Props of
Las Vegas, Nev. is a premier source for all Wild
West related supplies
and products, featuring
quality whips, blank
guns, replica guns and
trick roping.

Casey's friends have dubbed him as the “Whip Scientist”
since he knows all the dynamics, and indepth physics of
whips. “I have spent months and months just studying
whips,” said Casey . He noted it’s not about the money
cause it's not a high paying job, I do it for the passion of
whip making “You can spend a fortune just learning the
rule... the rule that you have to have at least 10,000 hours
of deliberate practice at something to become efficient.”
“I love whip making. I am not a greedy man, as long
as my son and wife are fed and have a roof over their
heads, the rest is up to God,” he ended.
Tyler, also an Army veteran, is looking forward to being
reunited with his wife in June. The family will head back to
California where she will be stationed at USMC Camp
Pendleton.

Along The Garden Path
-by Karen Runkle, Master Gardener
Starting Your Seeds Indoors
One way to get a jump start on your garden or flower
beds is to start some of the plants inside. When it comes to
plants, they all have the
same basic needs: sun,
food, and water. When you
start your seeds indoors,
you need to create an environment which provides
those needs. Your goal is
to help your seeds germinate into strong and
healthy seedlings for your
garden.
Five Tips for Getting
Them Started
TEMPERATURE - Though plants have different temperature needs, most seeds require an average soil temperature of about 75 degrees F to germinate. This means if you
are starting your seeds in an unheated greenhouse, cold
basement or other area that is not at a controlled temperature you will need to provide supplemental heat to ensure
proper germination.
This can be as simple as adding a heated growing mat
to your indoor setup. There are a few exceptions so check
your seed packet for temperature recommendations.
Example: Broccoli prefers a cooler growing temperature, but
tomatoes and peppers love the warmth. Once germinated,
an average temperature of 65-70 degrees is a good temperature to keep most seedlings growing well so they don't grow
too fast and get long and leggy.
PLANTING DEPTH - Poor germination rates are often a
result of incorrect planting depth. This is because if you
plant the seed too deeply it will run out of energy before it
reaches sunlight to make more. If you plant the seed to shallow, you run the risk of letting the seed dry out - and it will die
before germinating.
Some seeds, such as lettuce or petunias, actually
require light to germinate, so you will need to simply press
the seeds into your soil as opposed to covering them. The
back of your seed packet will usually inform you if this is the
case. A good rule of thumb is to plant the seed no deeper
than its diameter.
CONSISTENT WATER - Water is one of the most important parts of starting seeds. Too much leads to disease,
April 2017
Northwest Rural P.P.D.
mold or fungus and too little will lead to…..dead plants.
When starting your seeds it is best to use a spray bottle to
lightly mist the soil to keep it evenly moist. I cover my
seeds with a piece of hard plastic until they germinate to
keep the soil from drying out. Once they have germinated
you can begin to water more deeply, allowing the soil to
dry in between watering.
LIGHT - Most seeds do not require direct light to germinate, but once they sprout they will need about 14-16
hours of light per day. You can place your seed trays in a
south-facing window, under artificial light, or in a green
house - provided that they are the right temperature.
If you are using artificial lights make sure that their
height is adjustable so that the lights can be moved up as
the seedlings grow. You will want to place the lights as
close to the plants without touching. If you are growing on
a windowsill you may still need to provide some artificial
light, especially if you are starting the seeds during the
short days of winter. You also will want to turn your seed
tray on a daily basis in a window sill to keep the plants
from becoming leggy.
SOIL - Your seed starting soil is what gives your seeds
the best start possible. The simple solution is to get a
good premixed seed starting mix at your local store. You
can also buy peat pellets to start seeds. You place these
peat pellets in water to make them swell in small cubes
ready for the seed. Most of the plant plugs which I order
in at the greenhouse have been started in this manner.
The soil in your garden is usually not a great idea for inside
germination. It contains pathogens and weed seed which
will make the task difficult.
Providing for these five basic needs, you should be
well on your way to strong and healthy seedlings. Have a
good year!

Spring and Summer Safety Tips Reminded
It’s that time of year
again when many people are
out in their fields or yards
working. We just like to take a
minute to remind you of the
things you should be aware of
as you go about your work.
• Be aware of the location of
overhead power lines
while working with heavy
equipment, ladders or irrigation pipe. Keep a distance of at least 10 feet
between you and power
lines to avoid arcs.
• Never stack anything under
power lines. Do not put
your haystack there. Do not pile your irrigation pipe there.
• Do not plant trees under power lines.
• Always Call Before You Dig! Simply dial 811 and give them
your information. A locate will be done within two working
days.
• Use appliances and equipment according to the manufac-
turer's instructions.
• Use only outdoor rated extension cords and outdoor
rated appliances while working outside.
• Only use extension cords for a short period of time to run
farm related equipment. If a cord or wire is going to be
used regularly, run protected wiring, installed in electrical conduit for protection and durability.
• Replace damaged electrical equipment or have it
repaired at an authorized repair center.
• Use ground fault circuit interrupter (GFCI) protection
when working where water is near electricity to protect
against electric shock.
• Make certain that an independent testing laboratory
approves all products and equipment, such as
Underwriters Laboratories (UL).
• Keep all electrical connections out of reach from your
animals. Keep all extension cords, connections, and
lights far enough away from animals so they cannot
chew on them or come into contact with them.
• Plan your burning before you begin. Please be aware
that burning or even scorching a pole will compromise
the integrity of the structure.

1 tablespoon sesame seeds
Mix chipotle hot sauce, rice vinegar, soy sauce, ginger, and
agave syrup together in a small bowl to make sauce.
Heat olive oil and sesame oil in a wok or large skillet over
medium heat. Add ground turkey; cook, stirring to break up
clumps, until juices run clear, about 6 minutes. Season with
salt and pepper. Transfer to a bowl, reserving juices in the
wok.
Combine coleslaw mix, red bell pepper, green onions, and
garlic in the wok; cook and stir over medium heat until slaw is
slightly wilted, 1 to 2 minutes. Add sauce; mix to combine,
about 1 minute. Return turkey to the wok and stir until heated
through, 2 to 3 minutes.
Sprinkle sesame seeds over slaw before serving.

3 cups all-purpose flour
2 teaspoons baking powder
2 teaspoons salt
1/2 cup butter, room temperature
2 1/2 cups white sugar
4 eggs, room temperature
1/2 teaspoon almond extract
1 cup milk, room temperature
2 tablespoons grated lemon zest
1 cup chopped walnuts
6 tablespoons lemon juice
1/2 cup white sugar
Preheat oven to 325 degrees F (165 degrees C).
Grease and flour 2 loaf pans.
Combine the flour, baking powder, and salt and set
aside.
Beat the butter and 2 1/2 cups sugar with an electric
mixer in a large bowl until light and fluffy. The mixture
should be noticeably lighter in color. Add the room-temperature eggs one at a time, allowing each egg to blend
into the butter mixture before adding the next. Beat in the
almond extract with the last egg.
Pour in the flour mixture alternately with the milk, mixing until just incorporated. Fold in the lemon zest and
chopped walnuts, mixing just enough to evenly combine.
Pour the batter into the prepared pans.
Bake in the preheated oven until the loaves are very
lightly browned and a toothpick inserted into the middle
comes out clean, 60 to 70 minutes.
Mix the lemon juice with the 1/2 cup sugar in a bowl
until the sugar has dissolved. Pour the lemon glaze over
the hot loaves; allow to stand for 10 minutes before
removing loaves from the pans. Cool before serving.
