SUMMER NEWSLETTER 2012
Here’s what we’ve been doing and what’s
coming up.
The first half of 2012 has gone exceptionally well for EdUKaid
thanks to the kind support of charitable trusts, donors and
individual supporters who have continued to generously fund our
projects.
News from Tanzania
In May EdUKaid’s (new) Development Manager, Gemma Salt visited
projects in Tanzania along with Tim Varney, Chair of Trustees, Incisive
Media Director, David Worsfold and Volunteer, Joan Salt.
If you’d like to know more about what they got up to you can read David’s trip diary available online
at: www.incisivemedia.com/static/day-day-tanzania
Here’s some highlights from the trip….

Our First Official Staff Meeting
EdUKaid held their first full staff meeting on Tuesday 1st May with 15 staff present. Our Project
Coordinators, Askari, House Keeper and Pre primary teaching staff all came together at EdUKaid
House for the meeting. The staff afterwards explained it was a great success and were pleased to
come together to share ideas. We are really proud that it went well and hope they continue to do so!

Making Progress at Msijute!
The Fundi team (now equipped with their new uniforms) are making significant progress at Msijute
Primary. Here the team are building a classroom for Pre-Primary and also renovating all of the
classrooms, so the children can enjoy a more comfortable and better equipped place to learn. Also we
have succeeded in getting the parents involved here too, which has been a great achievement and we
are appreciative of their commitment.
All going to plan, the work in the primary classrooms will be completed within the next week and the
Pre primary class open by Mid July, which is just fantastic news and will make our 4th Pre primary class.
This is our most exciting Pre-Primary project yet, as it will be our first classroom built from scratch.
EdUKaid Pre Primary teachers working together to make resources
Our dedicated Pre primary teachers have been very busy making some new Montessori resources for
their classes. Their efforts and creativity will make a huge impact in the classroom and we are certain
the children will love them!
A reminder of what’s coming up next: Mwenge, Namgogoli and Naumbu Schools Improvement
Projects
Now that the long rains are over, work on the ground is progressing much faster and we will be
making a start at these schools very soon. The Incisive Media Foundation have very generously agreed
to fund the work at Namgogoli Primary. And our new partners HIM (Research and Consulting) will be
working very hard to raise the funds for works at Naumbu Primary. Thank You. This support will make
a significant difference and benefit 100s of children and the wider community.
As you can see there is a lot to be done, here are some photos from our recent monitoring visit…
Child Sponsorship Update
The child sponsorship project is continuing to be a great success and we are now working with over
100 children. Jaylani our project coordinator is still working very hard with his new assistant to get all
of the updates and reviews completed. We are delighted that so many of you are supporting the
vulnerable children of Mikindani through sponsorship and are appreciative of your patience whilst we
are collecting this information. We very much look forward to sharing some of their stories and
progress through an additional newsletter, which will be coming soon.
Good News Stories
To keep you in the loop, Jaylani’s new assistant was a previously sponsored student of EdUKaid and he
is now very proud to working alongside Jaylani in implementing EdUKaid Projects. A warm welcome
to Mohammed Mpondemoke. (He is already settled into the office and new place of work)
Stefano Fabian (a previous sponsored student of EdUKaid) graduated in May as a Secondary School
Teacher. Jaylani, Gemma, Tim, David and Joan all made the trip to the Teacher Training College in
Mtwara on his graduation day to meet and congratulate him on his achievement. He was delighted
that we made the effort to attend.

Appeal for 10 New Sponsors
We are also currently appealing for 10 new sponsors for older students/secondary pupils. The cost will
be £15 per month, £180 per year. These essential funds create opportunities for the most vulnerable
children to access an education. Your donation directly pays for their uniform, shoes, socks, exercise
books, pens, paper and school fees. Please get in touch if you would like more details or to sign up. If
you are a current sponsor and you are able to increase your donation to cover the increased costs
associated with schooling, please contact us at [email protected].
News from the UK
New look for EdUKaid
In the UK we have now launched our new logo (top of the newsletter) and our new website is well
underway. We expect now that it will go live at the end of July. If you can’t wait that long and love
social media, we have already started to share our news and stories from Tanzania using facebook and
twitter. Please keep checking online and join in!

Introducing Clare Nolan (Project Support Assistant)
As you can see we have been very busy the past few months, and because of this we have recognised
we need some help to support our operations in the UK and Tanzania.
Clare Nolan will be working with Gemma in the UK office part time from August. She will also be
supporting projects in Tanzania as and when needed. She is hugely excited about joining EdUKaid.
More from Clare soon.
Tim’s London Marathon Success
Tim Varney took on the greatest challenge of his life back in April. His strict fitness regime worked a
treat; he completed the run in 5:55 and raised £4,400. Well done Tim. Below he describes the
experience:
“Without doubt that is probably the most stupid thing I have ever done. Nothing could have prepared me
for the pain I felt in my ankles and knees for the last 12 miles. Yet despite the pain this was not the worse
thing that happened to me. No, the worse thing was getting to the last 600 meters and being over taken
by Big Ben, St Pauls Cathedral and the Gherkin. I will never look at those landmarks again in the same
way. A massive thank you to everyone who has helped me raise over £4,400. That is enough money to set
up a whole pre-primary school in Tanzania which will accommodate up to 60 children”
(Wet) Summer Fundraising Ideas
We’ve told you we’re upping our support and activity, so we have some suggestions for fundraising
during the summer months. Why not organise: An (indoor) summer fete/cake sale or have a carpet
picnic with your friends? Alternatively, if you fancy a challenge we have linked with events organisers
called, Across the Divide “Just Events” where you can join any of their open challenge events in
support of EdUKaid – Climbing Kili in 2013 is on the list (for the dare devils amongst you).Visit:
www.acrossthedivide.com or contact us directly and we will be pleased to fill you in.
Whatever it is you can do, big or small, all makes a huge difference and keeps our projects running.
Also, if you have any new ideas or need some support we’d love to hear from you.
Email [email protected] for more information about how you can “Get Hands On”.
Ongoing Call for Volunteer Fundraisers
This year we want to provide more opportunities for our supporters in the UK. As we have briefly
mentioned there is lots to be done in Tanzania and lots we still can do. If you are interested in getting
involved to help drive and implement fun events and challenges to raise much needed funds for our
projects, this promises to be an exciting opportunity to make a real difference. For more information
or an informal chat please contact Gemma Salt/Clare Nolan on 01725 514 612.
A BIG THANK YOU TO…
Out thanks go to all of our supporters and partners for their commitment, generosity and energy.
There isn’t space to name everyone we’d like to, but to mention a few specifically. We would like to
say a huge thank you to our very own Trustee, Ross Montagne, for running the Marathon Des Sables
for EdUKaid and for raising a staggering £1537.50. Not to mention, an equally big thank you to: Joan
Salt from The Feathers Hotel for donating the money for the uniforms for our Fundi team; to the Rye
Anthony School Oxford for the money raised from their 5K run - £ 381.89; and to Caroline Murray for
the money raised at another very successful plant sale -£560 . Finally thanks (again) on behalf the preprimary classes at Singino, Imekuwa, Mgao and Msijute to Telford Thomson, for the wonderful hand
made “Timber Toys” very kindly donated. We appreciate your continued support.
All support however large or small is always
gratefully appreciated
Thank you.
