Issue 2 2016 - Roncalli College

04 February 2016 - Issue 2, Term 1
Dear Students, Parents and Caregivers
We would like to extend a warm welcome to Mary-Jane Konings, Jannette Aldridge and Bronwyn Nichols. Ms
Konings is teaching ESOL, Junior English and Financial Literacy, Ms Aldridge is teaching Junior English and Mrs
Nichols has been appointed as the Workshop technician.
We are looking forward to hosting the Bishop Lyons here at Roncalli from 18 – 20 March. This competition has
a long history with the Catholic Secondary Schools in our Diocese. We hope this event is well supported by our
community.
In this newsletter we feature our head students, Abby O’Brien and Jacob Mulholland and our Academic Leaders
Meg Wolffenbuttel and Liam Rees. I am also very proud of the photograph below of our students who achieved
Excellence or Merit endorsements in their 2015 NCEA Level 1 and 2 examinations. Congratulations on these
wonderful results.
Below is an excerpt from the Inform publication:
Abby O’Brien
The amazing opportunities I have been presented with at Roncalli
have enabled me to learn and grow. My vision for this year is to
encourage students to take a risk and step out of their comfort zone
and try something new, no matter how small it is. Also to try and
involve as many of the students as possible in different school
events.
Jacob Mulholland
Being a part of Roncalli, we really don’t know how lucky we are, in
the sense that whenever someone comes into the school whether
it be a new adult or new student, they all comment on the warm
supportive environment and welcoming community. I am looking forward to my leadership role this year and
helping to make Roncalli a school that is truly outstanding.
Until Next Time, Chris Comeau

INTERNATIONAL
You may not be aware that Marte Rolvsjord is one of only half a
dozen international students studying in New Zealand educational
institutions who was chosen by Education New Zealand (ENZ) to be a
Kiwi Ambassador. You may be interested in reading Marte's blog on
the ENZ student blog http://www.studyinnewzealand.com/blog/tipsstudents-considering-high-school-new-zealand. Congratulations
Marte!

GATEWAY
It’s been a busy start to the term for students on our Gateway Programme. The
Tertiary Education Commission funds this awesome programme where students get
the opportunity to blend school study with workplace learning and experience.
Students are working through the pre-gateway phase where they are researching
careers, completing courses on workplace health & safety and first aid; they are now
starting ‘taster days’ where they spend a day each in up to three different workplaces.
All necessary equipment required for the job is provided through the programme and
it’s been a highlight for students being kitted out with their safety boots, overalls and
other safety equipment such as ear muffs, safety glasses and hard hats for some.
We have a vast array of careers being investigated and have students trialling days in
all sorts of exciting workplaces including trades - electricians, plumbers, builders,
painters, mechanics etc, plus retail, hospitality, tourism, butchery, agriculture, hair &
beauty and this year have some new careers to cater for such as journalism, sports
turf management and pharmacy.
Right & wrong safety
clothing displayed by
Devaney & Jordyn
Students will be registered for Gateway placements individually once they are
ready to commit to one day every week in the same workplace for 15 to 20 weeks,
they also need to be identified as work ready.
Each student will have an individual learning plan customised to their needs; they
are required to gain at least 20 credits relevant to their workplace, these credits
count towards national qualifications. ITO’s (Industry Training Organisations)
provide learning programmes with unit standards being assessed in the workplace
or by an outside assessor.
Gateway is equivalent to students starting an apprenticeship while still at school
while giving them the opportunity to try out potential careers and to build
links to Industry Training Organisations, NZ Apprenticeships and workplaces.
Hamish Workman with NZ Fire
Department
We will be profiling students in the newsletter each month so you can look
forward to hearing about their experiences and achievements.
We would welcome enquiries from anyone in the Roncalli community willing to
assist with workplace experience opportunities even if it is only for a day.
