Friday, March 15, 2013 ▪ 9:30am to 4:30pm Law Library of Congress 101 Independence Ave, SE ▪ Washington, DC 20540 Join the Law Librarian of Congress, David Mao, and Legal Reference Librarian, Ma hew Braun, to learn not only how to conduct free legal
research online, but also how to tap into the free resources and services available through the Law Librarian of Congress! This free program will focus on the legal research services and resources available from the Law Library of Congress, as well as several other free online
collec ons. Following a general overview of the Law Library and its services available to lawyers, librarians, and researchers around the
world, there will be an explana on of the organiza on and content of Congress.gov and THOMAS, the Library of Congress's federal legislave informa on sites, which together contain the full texts of House and Senate bills and resolu ons, the Congressional Record, and much
more, star ng with the 101st Congress (1989-90).
Special emphasis will be given to Congress.gov, which was launched by the Library of Congress in September 2012, and is in an ini al beta
phase, with plans to transform the Library of Congress's exis ng congressional informa on system into a modern, durable, and userfriendly resource. Eventually, it will incorporate all of the informa on available on THOMAS.
Learn about the Law Library's global research services, its vast collec ons in 195 languages from over 220 jurisdic ons worldwide, and its
expert staff equipped to answer your legal research ques ons. The program will also highlight other free, yet trustworthy, online legal
collec ons and search engines, such as the U.S. Government Prin ng Office's Federal Digital System (FDsys), Cornell University Law
School's Legal Informa on Ins tute, the University of California, Santa Barbara's American Presidency Project, HG.org, FindLaw, Jus a,
LexisWeb, Google Scholar, and a number of others products.
Learning Outcomes:
1. Familiarity with the specialized services, websites, collec ons and expert legal research staff available from the Law Library of Congress
free to all including solos, prac cing lawyers, librarians, researchers and those new to the profession;
2. Understanding of the organiza on, structure, content, and search strategies to perform me-saving legal research in Congress.gov and
THOMAS and other free legal databases from your own computer wherever you are in the world; and
3. Interac ve research demonstra ons and explana ons of websites and other research products produced and maintained by the Law
Library of Congress as well as other authorita ve Web-based collec ons and useful search engines.
Following the training, par cipants will be led on a tour of the Law Library and treated to a rare books presenta on featuring priceless
materials from the Law Library's vault!
