America's Castles
The cast les listed on A&E's America's Castles belonged to the ri c h and famous.
By looking at the history of some o f the fwnili es that owned these castles, it is easy to see why peop le say t h a t Ame r i c a is the l and of opportunity. Co rneliu s Vanderbilt was a man who took advantage o f the oppo rtun i ­
ties America had to offer.
He was born on May 27, 1794, to a family
of modest means.
Cornelius ended his for mal schoo ling by the ag e of
11 ( Encyclopedia Americana, 2001, Vo l. 27, 8 91 ) . He a c h ieve d success
because h e was indu s t r ious.
He knew h ow to wo rk , a nd he knew the
va lue of the mon ey that came f rom h a rd wor k .
Other qualities t h at
made him s u ccessf ul we re perseverance, enterprise , co ura ge, and
tru s t wort hiness .
Being trust wor thy me a nt he cou l d comman d better
prices than ot h ers doing the same job (Smith , 52 8 , 1 8 86) . Be c a use
of these qualities, Cor n e liu s Va nderbilt was ab l e t o a ma s s o ne of
t h e larges t for t unes ever made in America fro m his shi pp in g a nd
railroad enterprises.
Three of America's castles were built by d e sc e n dents of the man wh o
came out of humb le beginnings to amass such a l a rge f o rtune .
The
Biltmore House, The Breakers, and Marble House were all b u i l t by
Cornelius Vanderb ilt' s desce ndents.
Bi ltmore House
The Biltmore House, the l arges t private residence in America , i s
located on the Biltmore Estate of 8,000 acres near Ashev i lle , No r t h
Carolina . The h ouse and grounds are the most visited historic tour ­
ist destination in the nation.
The mansion , built for Geo rg e W.
Vanderbilt by Richard Morris Hunt (t he lat e n i n eteenth cen tu r y's most
ren owned arch itec t ), was s t y led after a Fr ench Renaissance Cha ceau
(Visitor's Guide to the Biltmore Estate, 2007).
The Breakers
Th e Breakers i s l oca ted in Newpor t, Rhode I s land.
It was b uilt for
Cornelius Va nderb ilt II.
The 70- r oom cas tle ( Italian Rena i ss an c e)
was s tart ed in 1 895. Upon it s comp l et i on, the castle was f i l led wi th
anti q ue s from France and Italy (A&E, America's Castles, "The Break ­
ers ," 2000).
Marble House
Marble House is also l oca ted in NelrJPort, Rhode Island.
Du ring the
1890s, Newport became the summer co l ony of New England's we a l th i e s t
families.
Marble Hou se was built by Wi l liam K. Va n d erbilt, a grand ­
son of Cornelius Vanderbil t, fo r his wife's birthday.
The cas tl e
cost $1 1 mil l ion; the 500,000 cub ic fee t of white marble that it took
to bu i l d it cost $7 milli on alone (Archi tectu r e, "Va n d erb ilt Marb l e
Hou se ," 2003).
