Task 11 Standard: The students will analyze literary elements (characterization, theme, setting, etc.) to comprehend text. (Content) Task: The students will create a collage using items found in a magazine that represent the theme of the story. We have previously used Aesop’s fables to discuss the theme in a story and how it can reoccur throughout the text. The class will look through magazines to find at least 10 pictures, objects, and words that have to do with the theme of the story. They will put these images and words into a collage. All items must be cut out and placed neatly onto the paper. Each student will write a summary using evidence from the story describing the significance of each item and how or why he chose his items to represent theme. Criteria: Number of items, relevance to theme, explanation of relevance Rubric: Criterion Number of items Criteria 10 Students are required to have at least 10 items that relate to theme. One point will be awarded for each item, up to 10 points. 0-3 4-7 8-10 Relevance to theme Three or fewer items are relevant to the theme of the story. Most items are not clear and seem to not fit in with theme. Seven or fewer items are relevant to the theme of the story. Some items are clear with no explanation. All ten items are relevant to the theme of the story. (By relevant, I mean that this word/ object has an important role in the story) Relevance is clear with no explanation. Explanation of relevance (written paragraph) Weak evidence is given from the story to explain how or why items are significant to the theme. Only a few items are explained and most of the objects/ words from the collage are left unexplained. Moderate evidence is given from the story to explain how or why some items are significant to the theme. However, some evidence does not make sense and needs further explanation. Strong evidence is given from the story to explain how or why all items are significant to the theme. Presentation The collage appears to be slapped together at the last minute. There seems to be little consideration to placement of objects and neatness. The collage shows that there was moderate effort. Some items on the collage were trimmed neatly and placed purposefully. The collage shows that there was considerable effort. All items were placed carefully and strategically and cut out neatly.
