We would like to emphasise that the work is to be done at a suitable level to your child’s year group and attainment level. Thank you. Viking Saga The Vikings used to tell long adventure stories called sagas. Remember, we’re talking about people who lived many, many years before televisions and computers were invented, so sagas would have been a great way of entertaining each other. Do you think you could write a Viking saga? An exciting story of adventure, battle or love perhaps? Recipe for a Raid You will need: 20 angry Vikings 1 longboat 1 monastery Several peaceful Anglo--‐Saxon monks A selection of weapons 1. Make all Vikings board the longboat 2. … Can you write your own ‘Recipe for a Raid’? Research Tasks Children can use books or the internet (with support) to research these topics further. A comment from parent or child, or some notes to show what has been learnt, would be appropriate to hand in. Viking Collage Think about an interesting Viking scene – here are some ideas to help you: A longboat on a stormy sea A Viking farm A Viking raid! A great place to start is http://www.bbc.co.uk/schools/primaryhistory/vikings/ Jorvik Trip Research A Longhouse Model We will be visiting Jorvik and York Dig in November to further our understanding of the topic. It would be of interest to you to have a look at their websites before we visit! Think about the features of a longhouse (the fire in the middle, a thatched roof, benches with animal skins) and try to create a miniature version. Choose your materials carefully! http://jorvik-viking-centre.co.uk/ http://www.digyork.com/ Time Yourself How long does it take you to do different things? Brush your teeth/eat breakfast/get to school/have a shower/clean your room/do 10 star jumps/hop around the garden etc. What can you do in two minutes? Try lots of different things! Record the Weight of Food Record the weight of different foods you have in your kitchen. Which are in kilograms (kg) and which are in grams (g)? Choose 5 packs and order them from lightest to heaviest. Are the big packs always heaviest? Are the small packs always lightest? Are there any units that you are not familiar with? Objects Longer/Shorter than a Metre 2D ID At home find five items that are shorter and five items that are longer than a metre. Order the objects according to their length. On walks, drives or at home, spot and name any 2D shapes that you see (e.g. road signs = triangle, window = square). Draw or photograph them, then label them with any properties that you know.
