MEMORIAL DAY
This Week’s Most Needed Item:
Canned green beans
The first ceremonies centered around the mourning-draped veranda of
the Arlington mansion, once the home of Gen. Robert E. Lee. Various
Washington officials, including Gen. and Mrs. Ulysses S. Grant, presided
over the ceremonies. After speeches, children from the Soldiers’ and
Sailors’ Orphan Home and members of the GAR made their way through
the cemetery, strewing flowers on both Union and Confederate graves,
reciting prayers and singing hymns.
EVOLVING:
By the end of the 19th century, Memorial Day ceremonies were being
held on May 30 throughout the nation. State legislatures passed proclamations designating the day, and the Army and Navy adopted regulations
for proper observance at their facilities.
It was not until after World War I, however, that the day was expanded
to honor those who have died in all American wars. In 1971, Memorial
Day was declared a national holiday by an act of Congress. Declaring it a
national holiday placing it under the Uniform Monday Holiday Act of 1968
of moving the holiday to the last Monday in May.
OBSERVING:
Cities and towns across the United States host Memorial Day parades
each year, often incorporating military personnel and members of veterans’ organizations. Some of the largest parades take place in Chicago,
New York and Washington, D.C. Many people observe Memorial Day by
visiting cemeteries to remember and decorate graves and/or by visiting
various memorials. And, on a less somber note, many people throw parties and barbecues on the holiday, perhaps because it unofficially marks
the beginning of summer.

Bible Classes for all
ages follow the
assembly and
conclude at 11:45.
I remember my grandparents always called
Memorial Day, Decoration Day. They went to
cemeteries religiously to put flowers on graves.
They included me in the activities from childhood. As a
kid, I thought it was all kind of strange. As years pasted
I began connecting the dots. The purpose to remember
and honor those who had died, especially those who
have died in service to our country, became clear to me.
I have continued to participate in decorating graves
through the years and I have learned amazing stories
about my relatives. There is something about going to
the graveside of people which brings their history to the
forefront. Because of the Decoration Day tradition I
have learned more of who my kinfolks were and what
they dealt with in their lives. I see their challenges and
honor their resilience. And, it helps me know me better.
Many of our traditions are like Decoration Day. We
may not as children understand what all is behind a
given tradition, like going to Bible class, but participating
is important nonetheless. As time passes we find out
meanings and realize the tradition can be quite valuable.
Each generation may change some of the details, like
the name and time, and we may add our own twist to it,
like going to the lake, but the purpose can remain true.
(See Memorial Day history on back page.)
So, parents keep your children participating in the
traditions you believe are valuable. Children, hang in
there. One day you will be glad you were a part and
possibly even be amazed at what you learned. And, one
day the tradition will be yours to use as you see fit.
