If you are able, please help with this important cause. There will be animals onsite in hopes of finding their forever homes! Mardi Gras Celebration Mardi Gras, French for “Fat Tuesday,” is the day before Ash Wednesday, or the beginning of Lent. Traditionally, early Christians would hold feasts and parties to use up all the meat and fat, eggs, cheese, and milk in their homes in the days leading up to Lent. During Lent fasting, praying, and eating only fish or meager fare was permitted. Today, Mardi Gras, or Carnival, as it is called in some countries, is usually celebrated for a couple of weeks and ends on Fat Tuesday, just before Lent. It’s no accident that the word Carnival comes from the Latin words carne and vale, meaning “goodbye meat.” On Tuesday, February 28 at 2:00 we will have a Mardi Gras themed Happy Hour in the DePiro room. At dinner your tables will be adorned with colorful beads and masks for you to wear. We’ll enjoy “New Orleans” style food for dinner. New Scam Alert If you get a call and someone asks you “CAN YOU HEAR ME” ? HANG UP THIS IS A SCAM! Virginia police are now warning about the scheme. .The “can you hear me” con is actually a variation on earlier scams aimed at getting the victim to say the word “yes” in a phone conversation. That affirmative response is recorded by the fraudster and used to authorize unwanted charges on a phone or utility bill or on a purloined credit card. You say ‘yes,’ it gets recorded and they say that you have agreed to something,” said Susan Grant, director of consumer protection for the Consumer Federation of America. “I know that people think it’s impolite to hang up, but it’s a good strategy.”But how can you get charged if you don’t provide a payment method? The con artist already has your phone number, and many phone providers pass through third-party charges. Remember it’s not rude to just hang up! ~On 26 January 2017, CBS News reported on the above scam~ History Lectures Rick Britton, local historian will be back this month for two more fun and informative history lectures. After dinner the family would huddle together around the radio to listen to their favorite playhouse dramas, such as “The Adventures of the Thin Man” or “The Inner Sanctum” to name a few. We are fortunate to have our very own drama club here at OLOP. They call themselves The “Footlighters” and they model their skits like the old radio theatre style plays. They practice weekly, on Fridays at 1:30 p.m., in the Activity Room on the Third Floor. Every couple of months they will present two or three comedy skits for your viewing pleasure. If this sounds like something you would like to be a part of, please come to one of the practices to see what they’re all about! It’s a good way to meet some fine people and take part in a unique experience. Coloring for Adults Have you heard about the new rave coloring for adults?
