As with most issues, there are differing views on how best to pay down – or pay off – debt. The mathematician in all of us says ‘pay down the debts with the highest interest rate first.’ Then there is the little voice that says ‘pay off the smallest debt first, then go to the second smallest,’ and so on. Regardless of which method you prefer, they both work. It’s a matter of personal choice. Here’s an overview of how each works: ◗ Sort your credit cards / debts by INTEREST RATES, highest to lowest • Attack the card / debt with the highest interest rate first. Pay as much MORE than the minimum as you can afford. • Make sure you make AT LEAST the minimum payments on other cards / debts – and on time -- so you don’t get hit with late fees or other penalties. • By consistently making larger payments on the higher interest debt, you will in the end pay less total interest charges over the life of that debt. • Once you have eliminated the highest rate debt, do the same with the second-highest, and so on. ◗ Sort your credit cards / debts by BALANCES, from the lowest to highest • Address the smallest balance first. Pay as much MORE than the minimum as you can comfortably each month. • Make AT LEAST the minimum payment on all other debt payments. • Once the smallest debt balance is paid off, ADD the amount you were paying on the first balance to the payments made on the next smallest balance. This is called ‘snowballing.’ • Now you have increased the size of payments on the second balance, increasing the speed with which this debt will be paid off. • Continue the process until debts are paid. Again – both methods are proven to work. You can decide which works best for you. TAYLORVILLE HILLSBORO LITCHFIELD 422 W. MAIN CROSS ST. 217-824-9658 138 E. WOOD 217-532-5300 801 W. We do not have stockholders like other financial institutions. We are owned by you, our members. Credit unions are not-forprofit and exist solely for the benefit of our members. Our “people helping people” philosophy allows us to give back to our membership and our local communities. At TCCU, we offer very low loan rates, pay dividends on our checking accounts, and donate to numerous organizations in our local communities. Thank you to all the members, employees, and directors that make TCCU such a great place. Yours Truly, 81 AND COUNTING! BauerFinancial, Inc., the nation’s leading independent bank and credit union rating and research firm, recently announced that TCCU again has been recognized as one of the nation’s superior credit unions. This extends our ‘winning streak’ to 81 consecutive quarters! According to Karen L. Dorway, president of BauerFinancial, Inc., “These past eight years have been difficult ones for financial institutions. But Taylorville Community Credit Union has not only survived, it has thrived. “Being able to maintain the highest level of financial performance, even in the most difficult of environments, TCCU was able to keep its focus on its members while others were trying to stay afloat.” This recognition means that TCCU excels in areas of capital, loan quality, profitability and more. Once again, we thank our members for your continued loyalty and support. TCCU MEMBERSHIP IS GOOD FOR LIFE Don’t forget … your TCCU membership is good for life. So whether you move, change jobs, retire or whatever, TCCU goes with you. And our e-banking capabilities make it easy to maintain your accounts. Will Perkins President 1 MORE LOCAL BUSINESSES PARTICIPATING IN 2015-16 SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM JUST WHAT THE DOCTOR ORDERED Student Registration Open Until October 23 Again this year, TCCU will offer six (6) $500 scholarships to graduating seniors from Taylorville, Litchfield, and Hillsboro High Schools who plan to continue their education at a trade school, community college or 4-year university. The winners will be determined by votes cast by shoppers. For every $10 spent in a locally-owned, participating business, shoppers can cast one (1) vote for their preferred student. There is a cap on the maximum number of votes in a given visit / purchase (100 votes / $1,000 purchase), but there is NO LIMIT to how many times you can shop / vote, and NO LIMIT to the number of stores you can patronize. In fact, we encourage you to patronize them all! Student registration for this year’s TCCU Scholarship Program closes on Friday, October 23. If you have a senior student – or know someone who does – tell them to get registered before it’s too late! Posters with all students’ names and photos will again be displayed in all participating businesses. Here is the list of all of the businesses where you can shop / vote. Voting runs from Saturday, November 14 through February 29, 2016. Union. For TCCU, the larger, more accessible and more visible facility is a prescription for success in serving the growing Litchfield-area membership. “We all are looking forward to being in the new offices,” says Branch Manager, Josh Maddaleno. “It seems like a long time coming, but seeing the new facilities taking shape, and hearing the excited comments from members, has made the wait worthwhile. “We obviously will need some time to get familiar with our new surroundings, but everything has pretty much fallen into place like we expected and planned for. We’re almost ready to welcome all of the community.” According to Will Perkins, TCCU President, the new office represents a strategic move by the organization. “When we decided a couple of years ago that a new, larger facility was necessary in Litchfield, the Board set out to find a location – and a building – that could be customized to our specific needs. “Those needs included visibility, easy access, drive-up capabilities, room for growth and expansion and, of course, it had to be in Litchfield. Fortunately, all of those needs are met with this new office. We hope our members and the Litchfield community are as excited about this move as we are.” The facility is just less than 2400 square feet, and offers a drive-thru lane, ATM and night deposit. It also provides additional space for member service, and certainly greater visibility and accessibility. An Open House will be scheduled for a later date – watch for the announcement, and bring a friend. Share the benefits of TCCU membership! SOMEONE YOU SHOULD KNOW In our continuing series to introduce you to TCCU staff, this issue of TCCU Times shines the spotlight on Rosalene (Rosie) Tewell of our Taylorville office. Regardless of the time of year, TCCU has a range of Personal Loans carved to meet your specific needs.* Holiday Shopping or Travel? A TCCU loan is just the ticket. TCCU – LITCHFIELD: BIGGER, BETTER AND OPENING SOON FOR BUSINESS! Rosalene Tewell A very familiar face in the Taylorville office is that of Rosalene (Rosie) Tewell, who has been with us since 1976, when she started as a part-time teller. Through the years, she’s been valuable in multiple roles, including providing day-to-day member service, working in bookkeeping, and in the loan department. For 10 years, Rosie was our Teller Supervisor, and for 13 years, she served as the Visa Coordinator. With all of that experience and knowledge, she has proven invaluable to us – and continues to be, even though she’s once again back to working part-time. And with her experience across so many facets of TCCU operations, she is quick to fill in when other staff from other departments are off. “I really enjoy working at the credit union,” Rosie says. “It’s the people – both our staff and our wonderful members. This is a great place to work. And we have the benefit of knowing – and sometimes seeing – that what we do actually helps people and make their life a little better. That’s a good feeling.” TCCU GOES INTERNATIONAL (FOR A DAY) In honor of International Credit Union Day, TCCU will ‘go international’ on Thursday, October 15. Stop by any of our three offices to enjoy coffee and bakery treats. Credit unions around the world will mark the day and celebrate our differences from other financial institutions, including: • Credit unions are not-for-profit. We ARE for people. • Credit unions are member-owned. We do NOT pay our Board Directors, and do not have stockholders. • Credit unions pay back their ‘profits’ to their members, in the form of lower interest rates on loans and higher dividends paid on savings. • Credit union MEMBERS elect the Board of Directors, all of whom are volunteers. • Credit unions do not make risky investments in foreign countries. We keep the money local, in our communities. Come help us celebrate everything that makes us different (better) than our competition. And bring a friend, co-worker or family member. Share the benefits of TCCU membership! 3
