In Social Studies we learnt about the continents of Africa and
North America. Students learnt that Africa is the second
largest continent, we looked at the many countries in Africa,
learnt to say Hello in Swahili (Jumbo!), looked at artifacts and
pictures from Africa, learnt about some of the animals we may
see in Africa, and read books about it.
We also learnt about the continent of North America. We
learnt that it was the third largest continent, and that Pacific
Atlantic and Arctic Oceans surround the continent. We also
learnt about some important countries in North America.
Students who have visited Canada and Mexico shared their
experiences with the class.
In case you would like to share your experience in a
North American or a South American country, would
you let me know? We would love to have you come in!
Writer’s Workshop:
In Writer’s Workshop, we began writing Realistic Fiction
stories. Students learnt that realistic fiction stories are
fictional stories that can actually happen. We also learnt that
fiction writers make up pretend characters, they give the
character a name, choose a setting and most importantly
figure out the problem the character will confront.
Students then practiced getting their character out of trouble
to end their story. Many students came up with very
imaginative scenarios.
