Intra-mammary antibiotic options

Intra-mammary antibiotic options
for the treatment of mastitis during lactation
Intra-mammary antibiotics are usually the first option in the treatment of mastitis during lactation.
The type of antibiotic that will be effective in treating the mastitis should ideally be based on culture
results (see articles on page 1 and 2). If you want to treat with antibiotics immediately rather than
waiting for culture results it is recommended that you collect a milk sample before treating the
affected quarter and place the sample in the freezer. If the mastitis does not respond to treatment
the untreated sample can be cultured to find out if there is a more suitable treatment option.
