Scene I: Arnolphe, an older man, runs into a young friend, Horace, who tells him all
about a young girl he's just fallen in love with. Little does he know that Arnolphe
intends to marry this girl, as Arnolphe tries to hide his disappointment and rage.
Scene 2: The jealous Arnolphe confronts the young girl, Agnes, asking her
why she likes Horace more than him. Agnes can offer one explanation: Horace doesn't
have to try so hard.
