The Maple Hill Messenger TIM TALK A Weekly Publication of the Maple Hill church of Christ / Lebanon, Tennessee “I will never leave you nor forsake you.” (Hebrews 13.5) Are there times in your life when it’s hard to believe that Jesus is really with you? Perhaps the following from my friend and brother Keith Brenton will help you see him. Until we meet again…TWP Almost 3,000 feet away and almost due east from my house stands the Christ of the Ozarks Statue. Some of my neighbors call it “Gumby.” I like to call it “Big Concrete Jesus.” I have no real idea how the Good Lord feels about it, since He seemed to be rather inclined against any kind of idolatry or appearance of it in older scripture. Whether He approves or not, there it is. My neighbor, BCJ. So I have determined that I will love my neighbor as myself. Truth is, BCJ is a good reminder. The last couple of days [because of weather conditions] BCJ has been hard to see. Just as in my life — and I’m guessing, yours — Jesus is sometimes hard to see. We look at the mess our world is in and we wonder why He’s so hard to see. Generations before and since, people in ours and other nations have been wondering the same thing when sin and evil and hatred and death haunted their loved ones — have been asking where He is. And, just like BCJ on my morning walks, Jesus was where He has been all along. Jesus is right where we left Him in the story of scripture, since He physically left this world the last time. At the Father’s right hand. In heaven. In charge. Doesn’t He see what’s happening down here? Doesn’t He hear our cries and prayers? Doesn’t He know we’re hurting, starving, fighting, dying? Sure He knows. He was here, remember? Lived here. Taught here. Healed here. Loved here. Lost loved ones here. Died here. Lived again, here, in this world, only to rise to a better one to make a better place for us. If He’s hard to see, it’s not because He’s moved. It may be because we have. Or the clouds that obscure Him have. Or the lights have failed and the darkness has, for a time, won out. But He’s still there. I moved 800 miles recently — not so much to be closer to BCJ, but to my kids — and I doubt that I’ll be moving any closer to the statue on East Mountain. But I hope I never lose sight of Jesus, or stop moving closer to Him, or give up and stop trying to see Him — whether He seems obscured or seems as clear as on a crispy, sunshine-drenched autumn day. Even if I do, though … He’s still there. Still there, rejoicing with those who rejoice. Still there, mourning with those who mourn. Still there, interceding for those who pray. Still there, providing and remaining and answering the door for those who ask, seek and knock. I know I need to remember that. Maybe you do, too. Well, that’s the way I see things from Eureka Springs, Arkansas — where the fog creeps in on little cat’s feet and beats a retreat when a storm is the norm. And where BCJ says “Hey.” (from https://keithbrenton.com/2016/10/13/when-its-hard-to-see-jesus/) There is no fear in love. But perfect love drives out fear, because fear does has to do with punishment. The one who fears is not made perfect in love. 1 John 4:18 October 30, 2016 ORDER OF WORSHIP The Steadfast Love of the Lord........................................123 I Love You With the Love of the Lord..............................703 Opening Prayer..............I John 4:18-21...........Wade Walker The Love of God................................................................122 Boundless Love..................................................Screen Only The Greatest Commands..................................................448 "Loving Like Jesus".............................................Tim Parish Zion's Call..........................................................................625 If That Isn't Love................................................................386 Lord's Supper..........Matthew 21:1-11.............Jeff Mangrum Shepherd's Prayer..............................................Bob Chaffin Jesus Loves Me..............................................................1014 Closing Prayer................................................Tommy Wright Elder’s Corner Standing In Awe Andrea and I just returned from our vacation to the Four Corners region in the Western United States. During our trip, we visited a number of National and State parks in the area and hiked several miles in each. We were also privileged to worship with our brothers and sisters in Moab, UT and Gallup, NM (those experiences are probably for another article!). While I was telling one of my co-workers about the wonders of God’s creation that we had seen, he asked me what I thought was the most impressive thing. After considering the question, I told him the answer would have to be seeing the stars at Arches National Park. The desert area there is famous for a dark, clear sky. Late one afternoon, we made our way to the back side of the park. The sun set, and the sky darkened, so the stars began to appear. As we stood looking into the sky, we saw the Milky Way Galaxy, the planet Mars, and more stars than we had ever seen with just our naked eyes. At that moment, I considered the power of God and how He was able to speak into existence all that I was seeing. Suddenly, I felt very small and insignificant, but then I thought about Matthew 10:29-31: “Are not two sparrows sold for a cent? And yet not one of them will fall to the ground apart from your Father. But the very hairs of your head are all numbered. So do not fear; you are more valuable than many sparrows.” NASB The fact that the same God who created the universe cares that much for me is more than I can comprehend. I truly was standing in awe of God. In our busy lives, it is easy to forget the greatness of the God we serve. Let’s take some time this week to consider Psalms 46:10: ”Cease striving and know that I am God; I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth.” NASB ~ Brian Please Pray For Family & Friends News Family & Friends News CRAIG ALSUP, brother of Doug Alsup, is undergoing chemo treatments for liver cancer.
