Maybe I’m just getting older and maybe my memories have faded over time. Sure, I had the memories of opening gifts and getting things I never dreamed of getting. I remember our young sons seeing their gifts under the tree and the joy and surprise reflected in their faces. But I still wasn’t coming up with many specific memories. So I leaned back and kept thinking about my favorite Christmas memories. The first memory that came to mind was about going to church as child and hearing the classic Christmas Carols. Christmas music has always captured my emotions but I wasn’t sure why. The music brings back memories of my youth when my parents, my sister and I were a family. They’re all gone now and I have my own family. But when I hear these classics today, especially when sung live, it brings a lump to my throat as I retreat to my youth. I always wondered why I get sentimental with Christmas Carols … but now I understand the reason. Music collects memories. I struggled recalling specific gifts that I’ve received over the years. One special memory comes from Christmas in 2003. We had lost our 12-year-old English Bulldog, Winston, a few months before Christmas. Matt and Sherry put together a collage of Winston’s photos and framed it for me as a Christmas gift. When I unwrapped that gift, well, let’s just say I lost it. Photos are memories. Another memory I cherish is the smells of Christmas. A live Christmas tree and cooking in the kitchen bring fond memories of when I was a child and a parent. Of course, you can’t remember the smells without remembering the taste, like the “Cotton Pickin’ Cake” that my Mother and now Sherry made for every Christmas season. This is not an old family recipe. I’ve seen similar recipes in various cook books. Just like the smell of Christmas trees, this cake has become a part of my holiday memories. We still have the recipe written in my Mother’s hand writing. I’ve included the recipe on page 3 if you’d like to try it. Gifts at Christmas are great. Who could deny the emotion of a teddy bear given to a 3year-old? But as I reflect, it seems that my best Christmas memories were created not by the cents - but by the senses. Bending over one day to help Sherry with her least favorite chore - emptying the dishwasher, I got a full whiff of bad breath coming from a relatively new model (the dishwasher - not Sherry). So I decided to research and find the best and easiest way to solve this problem. Here’s what I learned. Dishwashers collect food particles and over time, gunk from food particles will cover the walls and door. If you wait long enough, it can create bad smells and even reduce the effectiveness of the washing process. Running the dishwasher full of dirty dishes will not clean up the smelly mess. This is how you can easily correct the problem. 1. Empty the dishwasher (that’s my job), and not just the dishes. Take anything out that you can easily remove. Wash the gunk off the attachments with a cloth and dish soap and return them to the dishwasher. 2. Check the filter for anything at the bottom … like food, a spoon or your wedding ring you lost a week ago. The drain will not work properly if clogged up. Using a cloth and dish soap, clean the edge and outside of the door where water doesn’t reach when the machine is cleaning. Area Rug Cleaning 205.821.2909 3. Please 2 cups of white vinegar is a dishwasher-safe cup and put it on the top rack. Then run the dishwasher. Don’t use bleach because if the bleach does not get completely washed out of the dishwasher, it can leave a toxic chemical. This will get rid of gunky food mess and the foul odor, but you’ve replaced it with a vinegar smell. That’s an improvement but it’s not perfect. We’re on the Web at 4. To really freshen it up, place a cup or two of lemon juice in the top rack and run the dishwasher again. Your dishwasher will now smell lemony fresh!
