economically after WWII, so they gave up
colonies because they were too expensive to
maintain.

“Who Was Ho Chi Minh?”
Ho Chi Minh was born in the colony of French Indochina
in 1890 and died in 1969. In 1911, he went to France to get
his education, but ended up traveling the world working odd
jobs on French steam ships. In 1919, Ho Chi Minh began his
fight for Vietnam’s independence during World War I (19141918). He was inspired by U.S. President Woodrow Wilson’s
Fourteen Points, which called for allowing all people to decide
how they wanted to be governed.
When world leaders met in Paris to negotiate the postWorld War I peace treaty, Ho Chi Minh sent them a petition
demanding Vietnam’s independence, but received no
response, especially from the U.S., who completely ignored
his pleas for help! After being rejected by the major world
democracies, he turned to communism. Ho Chi Minh thought
the Communist Party was the best route to Vietnamese
independence because communists were outspoken critics
of European colonialism.
