Laptop Acceptable Use Policy in effect by tech department
All students in grades 3 through 12 are
issued a laptop provided by SACS. Students
are responsible for the care of the laptop as
outlined in the Laptop Acceptable Use. In the
event the laptop is lost, stolen, neglected,
intentionally damaged, or damaged as the
result of horseplay, students are expected
to report those incidents immediately. After
the incidient has been reported, the cause
will be determined by a SACS administrator.
If SACS determines the incident is the result
of an accident, all repairs will be completed
at no cost.
Failure to report any incident within two
school days will automatically result in the
student/parent being responsible for the
cost of all repairs or replacement. All other incidents, including habitual accidents,
will result in the student/parent paying for
the cost of the repair (avverage is $110 but
could be higher) or replacement of the laptop ($751 for MS, $590 for HS).

PowerSchool helpful tool for tracking student attendance
As mid-term approaches, it
is important to review your
student’s attendance for this
school year. School policy
states that parents/guardians can excuse their student
10 times per school year. If
a student exceeds the 10
parent excused absences, a
doctor’s excused note is required for the absence to be
excused. If a doctor’s note
is not available, the absence
will be considered a truancy
and forwarded to the discipline office.
Parents/guardians have
the ability to verify their student’s attendance through
PowerSchool. Sign on to your
PowerSchool account. Select
‘Attendance History’ at the
left-hand side of the screen.
This will provide a calendar
grid that will show all atten-
dance coded for your student
for the current school year.
There is a legend at the very
bottom of the screen that will
explain the attendance codes.
Parent excused absences
are coded as ‘PX.’ Count the
number of days that have at
least one ‘PX,’ as each day
that has a ‘PX’ coded will be
counted towards your student’s 10 available parent excused absences.
1. If you do not have an account, you may create a PowerSchool account by going into the
SACS website.
2. Select Homestead High School in the upper right hand corner of the screen.
3. Select ‘Parent’ in the upper right hand corner of the screen.
4. Select the PowerSchool link to go into PowerSchool.
5. Select ‘Create Account.’ Note: An instructional video is available for creating your account.
Select ‘Create Account Instructional Video’ blue bar under the sign-in box.
6. Then follow the instructions listed above that will explain how to determine the number of
parent excused absences used this school year.
7. If you have any questions concerning your student’s attendance please call: Grade 9
(260)431-2302. Grades 10-12 (260)431-2423

Five Homestead students competed at the
FCCLA State Leadership
Conference in Indianapolis
last week and all five qualified to move on to the FCCLA National Leadership
Conference. In order to
qualify for nationals, students must be in the top
two in the state for their
category. The students
who participated are: Alex
Clifford (12), Kynadee
Burnham (9), Cobi Schieferstein (10), Annabelle
Lessner (10), and Nicole
Strouts (11).
Each student chose
a Star Event they wanted to work on for this
school year. The projects
were very involved and
took months to complete.
Alex Clifford chose Fashion Design. In this project, students developed a
clothing label, researched
the intended audience,
designed the label’s first
6-piece collection, and
constructed one collection
sample using an original
flat pattern designed by
the student. Alex chose a
Disney inspired line and
created a beautiful pink
gown from his own pattern. He received a Silver
medal and was in the top
two in his category.
Kynadee Burnham
chose Focus on the Children for her project. This
project consisted of planning and conducting a
child development project

that has a positive impact
on children and the community. Kynadee chose to
do her project on “Character Counts”. She wrote
scripts and
put on a
puppet show
for five-year
olds to teach
them various
character
traits.
She
will be going once a month
to do another trait to Sonshine Academy. Kynadee
received a Silver medal
and also landed in the top
two in her category.
Nicole Strouts chose
Interior Design. In this
project, students were
given a client scenario
made by input from members of The American Society of Interior Designers
(ASID). Nicole’s scenario
was “The Pocono’s Children’s Camp.” She had to
create a floor plan, an elevation and a furniture/ interior plan addressing the
specifics of this particular
design scenario. She received a Silver medal and
also placed in the top two
of her event.
Cobi Schieferstein and
Annabelle Lessner competed in Entrepreneurship. They had to develop
a plan for a small business and it had to relate
to an area of Family and
Consumer Sciences education or related occupations. They chose to start
MARCH 2016
and run a coffee bar which
is located at Homestead.
They used all of the money earned to help a family
stricken with cancer, for
scarves for
the
homeless, to buy
the material we used
to make pillow cases for
children with
cancer, and were able to
fund all of the lodging for
our conference. Cobi and
Annabelle received a Gold
medal and won their category.
All students had to
give a ten to twenty minute presentation to three
judges to share their portfolios or projects. Judges
were given rubrics and
scores were averaged.
The students did not find
out the results until two
days later. All of them will
now be able to compete
at FCCLA’s National Conference in San Diego, California this summer.
FCCLA is a national
Career and Technical Student Organization that
provides personal growth,
leadership development,
and career preparation
opportunities for students
in Family and Consumer
Sciences education. It was
established at Homestead
three years ago. Students
who are interested in joining can contact advisers:
Tiffany Ham or Susan Ward.

READING ROOM
NOW OPEN
The HHS Reading Room is now open! Room 731, formerly the English Department Office,
has been remodeled by Ms. Ward’s Interior Design students. As part of the course, students
created a design board to use for inspiration and from that selected materials to create a
room for student and teacher groups to enjoy! They formally presented their design to Ms.
Imbody, English Department Chair, for feedback. Materials were then purchased using funds
received from a Parent Club grant.
Teachers and staff members can now sign-up to use the room for a variety of activities:
silent reading, group projects, test make-ups, teacher collaboration meetings, etc. Leftover
grant money was used to purchase a Keurig and other drink/food supplies. Teachers and
students wishing to use the room should sign up on the bulletin board outside of 731. Please
bring a snack/coffee donation to help keep supplies going.

REDESIGNED SAT TEST
College Board states, “When students open their SAT test books
in March 2016, they’ll encounter an SAT that is more focused and
useful than ever before”. College Board has redesigned their SAT
test and will be offering the new redesigned test March of 2016.
According to College Board, the redesign is centered on eight key
changes:
1. Relevant Words in Context
2. Command of Evidence
3. Essay Analyzing a Source
4. Focus on Math that Matters Most
5. Problems Grounded in Real-World Contexts
6. Analysis in Science and in History/Social Studies
7. Founding Documents and Great Global Conversation
8. NO PENALTY FOR WRONG ANSWERS
How will colleges evaluate scores from the current version vs.
the redesign version of SAT?
College Board will be publishing a concordance table that will allow
colleges to compare and align scores from the current version of
the test with those from the redesigned version prior to releasing
the exam in March of 2016.
The College Board has partnered with Khan Academy to offer a
free, personalized practice program for students who plan to take
the redesigned SAT starting in March of 2016. The program includes 8 diagnostic quizzes to pinpoint areas
of study, 4 official full length practice tests,
and thousands of interactive practice questions tied to video lessons and hints. Visit
this website to enroll or to learn more about
this opportunity: https://www.khanacademy.org/sat

NINTH GRADE academy
Our Ninth Grade Academy team has enjoyed getting to know and working with the class of
2019. It has been a great year! Below we have listed some frequently asked Ninth Grade
Scheduling questions. Students and parents are also encouraged to contact counselors, Mr.
Anderson ([email protected]) and Mrs. Braman ([email protected]) with any
questions you might have about next year.
*Adding a Seminar: If a student holds 7 credit-bearing classes their 9th grade year, he/she
has the option of dropping a course for a Seminar until March 11.
*Summer PE (Most every weekday morning in June):
Registration for Summer PE opens after Spring Break. We
encourage interested families to watch Homestead’s website or stop by the Ninth Grade Academy main office to pick
up an application the week following Spring Break. Summer PE does fill up quickly, and priority is given to upperclassmen. We encourage 9th grade families interested to
have a “plan B” just in case the program reaches capacity
this summer.
*PE II Waiver: If your child intends to participate in a
sport or activity that allows them to qualify for the PE2
waiver, he/she must sign up for PE1 Sophomore year, if
they have not already taken that course. Being scheduled
to complete PE1 is one of several requirements of the PE2
waiver. A complete list of waiver requirements can be found
in the Course Description Guide and on the Waiver Request
Form.

Dear AP Student and Parents:
Homestead High School is proud to participate in the Advanced Placement (AP) Program of rigorous college-level courses and examinations under the guidance of The College Board. You are to be congratulated that you have
chosen to participate in this internationally recognized program. The College Board highly recommends that all college-bound students take at least one AP course and exam while they are in high school.
It is time to order AP exams for this school year. The AP exams will be given May 2 – May 13, 2016. Parents please
do not make any outside appointments for your son/daughter during the school day or immediately after school
on your child’s test days. The Bulletin for AP Students and Parents accompanies this letter. We encourage you to
review this information in deciding what test(s) you may want to take. Also enclosed is the AP Exam Application
(blue) which must be returned. This application is also on-line under the SACS website (www.sacs.k12.in.us). Go to
Homestead HS and then the Guidance Home Page to find this letter and application. This letter and AP Exam Application were also sent out in the online newsletter.
The Indiana Department of Education will fund the cost of the AP exams for Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Calculus, Computer Science, Environmental Science, Statistics AND ENGLISH LANGUAGE AND ENGLISH LITERATURE, WHICH IS NEW THIS YEAR. Students must be enrolled in the class and be a junior or senior to
receive the free tests. If you are taking an exam that is marked free, you must still mark that you want the exam to
be ordered. For example, if you plan on taking the AP Calculus AB, AP Government, and AP English Composition
exams, you would mark all three exams but pay for one exam, AP Government.
In addition, Homestead has added $1.00 to the AP Exam fee of $93.00, making the cost for each AP exam $93.00.
This additional revenue will be used to pay for proctoring of the exams over the two week period. For an exam to be
ordered, I must have payment, along with the application by Friday, March 18, 2016. Checks should be made out
to Homestead High School and given or mailed to Mrs. Hamilton in Student Services. I do not order any extra exams. If an exam is ordered and the student decides not to take the exam, a non-refundable fee of $15.00 will be subtracted from your refund. Students should also notify each AP teacher if they are planning on taking an AP exam.
Please remember that students who are taking AP courses to pursue the Core 40 Diploma with Academic Honors
MUST take the corresponding AP exam for the courses to qualify.
Students, who are on free or reduced lunch here at HHS, are eligible for a fee reduction for AP Exams. Please contact me
if you are interested in receiving this fee reduction.
I am happy to work with you regarding the Advanced Placement Program. If you have additional questions please
feel free to contact me at 431-2212.
Sincerely,
Amy Hamilton
