For a good gauge swatch, observe the following: Always use the suggested yarn for your gauge swatch. Always knit or crochet the given pattern. The gauge swatch should measure at least 5 x 5 inches (12 x 12 cm). Treat the finished gauge swatch as you plan to treat the finished knit or crocheted piece. If blocking and dampening are part of the finishing process for the object, then treat your gauge swatch the same way. Count the number of stitches in a 4 x 4 inch (10 x 10 cm) area in the center of the gauge swatch. If your gauge swatch is too tight (i.e. you need more stitches and rows than given), then make a new gauge swatch with larger needles. If your gauge swatch is too loose (i.e. you need fewer stitches and rows than given), then make a new gauge swatch with smaller needles. Gauge: 16 stitches and 22 rounds with 4.5 mm needles in st st = 4 x 4 inches / 10 x 10 cm. Now you can get started, just follow these instructions: The hat is knit from bottom to top. With the 4 mm dp ndls, cast on 80 stitches and distribute evenly over 4 ndls. Join to a round and work 6 rounds in rib pattern. Then work 1 round st st, increasing 12 stitches evenly spaced across the round by working 1 st each into the running thread = 92 stitches. Now change to the larger ndls and continue in lace pattern. Afer 48 rounds (= about 81/2 inches / 21 cm) from rib band, continue in st st and decrease as follows to shape the hat: Rnd 1: *K2, K2 tog, repeat from * to end of round = 69 Rnd 2: K all stitches. Rnd 3: K 2 stitches each tog, end with K 1 = 35 stitches. Rnd 4: K all stitches. Rnd 5: as round 3 = 18 stitches. Rnd 6: K 2 stitches each together = 9 stitches. Cut the yarn and use the wool needle to pass the yarn end through the remaining stitches to pull them together. That‘s it! Your My Mountain hat is finished!
